Nestled amid the pine trees on a rural Alabama state highway,
Lenzing Fibers Inc. is producing environmentally friendly fibers
used in many everyday products, redefining how consumers worldwide
clean their homes, wash their faces and sleep at night. Lenzing’s
TENCEL ® technology, which uses an environmentally sound
process to turn wood pulp into nonwoven fibers, is being incorporated
into a variety of applications from household cleaning products,
such as dust and cleaning wipes, to cosmetic applications, such
as Olay and Aveeno facial cloths. The fibers are also being used in
flame retardant fabrics for bedding and car hoodliners.
The nonwoven fibers reshaping the industry are being made at
the 105-person Lenzing plant in Axis, Alabama. Led by Plant Manager
Kevin Allen, Lenzing’s 440,000 square foot Alabama operation
has taken safety as its motto and productivity as its mission.
A large proportion of the plant’s output is destined for the local
nonwoven industry, which, when combined with imported viscose
fibers from other Lenzing sites in Europe and Asia, accounts for
more than 50% of local US consumption.

Lenzing’s Alabama plant opened as a Courtaulds operation in 1992
as the first commercial plant in the world to produce Lyocell fibers
