Design of a low-power CMOS-based pH sensor
Tutor: Dr.-Ing. Eckhard Hennig (eckhard.hennig@imms.de)
In this master’s thesis, the student will design a low-power CMOS pH sensor module which can be in-
tegrated in a miniaturized multiparametric RFID sensor tag for applications in environmental monitoring,
life sciences, etc.
Tasks
• Conduct a literature survey on electrical pH measurement techniques
• Investigate implementation options for ion-sensitive field-effect transistor (ISFET) devices
and reference electrodes in standard CMOS processes
• Design an ISFET device using the process layers from a commercial 0,35-µm CMOS process
• Design an integrated analog low-voltage/low-power sensor readout circuit with power-
management support (sensor amplifier with sleep mode) in the same process
• Design ISFET test structures and a block layout of the pH sensor frontend
• Develop a high-level behavioral model of the pH sensor circuit for system-level simulations
Prerequisites
• B.Sc. degree in microelectronics or a related field
• Basic knowledge of CMOS analog integrated circuit design and layout
• Basic knowledge of CMOS manufacturing processes
Desirable experience
• Analog IC design with Cadence Virtuoso
• Low-power/low-voltage CMOS opamp design
• Basic knowledge of sensor frontends and materials
Type & Period
• Master’s Thesis (6 months)
Design of a low-power CMOS-based humidity sensor
Tutor: Dr.-Ing. Eckhard Hennig (eckhard.hennig@imms.de)
In this master’s thesis, the student will design a low-power CMOS relative humidity (RH) sensor module
which can be integrated in a miniaturized multiparametric RFID sensor tag for applications in environ-
mental monitoring, life sciences, etc.
