The Nation
Changing
Rachael Smith
I found a love for Israel
but lost the illusion of the life.
I found an abstract ideaof
red-dashed borders,
of precedents,
rights, ideascloser
to me, than any abstraction
before.
But I found this Zionist idea,
anywhere, found here־to be
carried back
not to stay.
Here I found
honking and rallies
wild bus routes
undecipherable phone bills.
I found confusion,
that increases the more I learn,
the more I know.
I found a city, a country
and in that I lost the idea.
The idea of the country
which I’ll only get back,
when I leave.
Once swamps and deserts
useless and barren.
I now drink the milk
I taste the honey.
But I see the broken backs
that made her give birth.
Those who gave their lives
to make the deserts green
and the swamps fertile.
The children who fought and
became soldiers in the night.
The children who fight
and are soldiers in the night.
Any and every Jew, wished to come
welcome in the land of hope.
To share in the simcha of
the Brit of Israel.
