Vacations
World News
I
Ulpan’s over and we have three
weeks off. What should we do?
Turkey, Greece. . . . Where should
we go for winter break? Kenya,
Eastern Europe, home. . . .
Pesach? Egypt, Jordan. . . .
Shavuot? Summer? The time is
ripe, the destinations accessible -
Let's Go!
The plane leaves at six a.m. and
we have to get to the airport by
three a.m.!l Where’s my ticket? I
have sixty francs to get rid of; I'll
have twenty Snickers bars and two
magazines please. Two words: Duty
Free. Three days on this ferry: no
showers, no food, and I can't see
travelling with these people for the
next three weeks. No, you look to
the right before crossing the street
(as the giant Mack truck screeches
to a haltlll) Four thousand drachmas
divided by...what's the exchange
rate? Man, it’s only $300
to fly to Europe, an opportunity I
simply can’t pass up. Okay, should
I eat at McDonald's and skimp on
real food, or forget the hostel and
bag it in the park?
Extended breaks in the academic
year made it possible to plan a
year-long itinerary to travel the
world. After eight strenuous weeks
of intensive Ulpan, many students
journeyed to Greece and Turkey to
prolong their summer tans. The
picturesque Greek villages and
beaches, the Acropolis, Dolmabahce
Palace in Istanbul and the threeday
ferry ride were some of the
most memorable experiences.
Travel through Europe attracted
students during each vacation period.
By winter break and Pesach
vacations, parents yearned to see
their little sweethearts. If a family
trip to Israel wasn’t feasible, many
students were forced to make the
dreaded trip home. Others were
fortunate enough to escape their
parents and see such exotic places
as Europe and Africa. Kenya was
a popular choice for warm weather
and thrills. Students remarked
that the culture and people were
incredible to observe, along with
the animals spotted on some daylong
safaris.
Finally, a weekend excursion to
Jordan, Egypt, and the Sinai
offered convenience and a peek of
the Middle East outside of Israel.
Worries about safety deterred
many, but the more daring enjoyed
experiences that Trill give them
great memories and photo albums.
