Sibiu Young since 1191
Sibiu was first mentioned in documents in 1191, under the name of Cibinium.
In 1223 Sibiu is mentioned under the name of Vila Hermanni, a rural type of
dwelling. The disaster caused by the Tartar raids between 1241 and 1242 led to
the acknowledgment that the dwelling needed to be reinforced. Fortification
works thus began and extended during the next centuries so that in the 15 th
century Sibiu became one of the best defended fortresses in Transylvania. The
first hospital on the present day territory of Romania opened in 1292 in the
Asylum Church, a building still existing today. In 1366 Sibiu is mentioned for
the first time under the name of Hermannstadt.
The fortress’s resistance facing the Ottoman attacks in 1438 caught
the attention of the entire Europe. Pope Eugene the 4 th called the
city of Sibiu a “defender of the entire Christianity”.
In the 15 th century, the economical and social life and the
most important events of the fortress unwound around
the three squares: the Small Square, the Large Square
and the Huet Square. They were extremely well defined
from a structural and social point of view: the houses
of merchants and craftsmen were situated in the
Small Square whereas the imposing houses of
the city elite dominated the Large Square.
6 Sibiu - Young since 1191
Whereas the city development,
the flourishing of the guilds and
commercial activity are concerned,
these become a constant in the
city life between the 14 th and the
18 th century, a period during which
Sibiu was the most important
crafts center in Transylvania. The
number of guilds in Sibiu increased
from 19 in 1376 to 26 in 1719, 34 in
1724 and 40 such organizations in
1780.
The activity of the guilds had a
determinant role in the development of crafts and in the economical and
commercial evolution of the area, by setting rules for the production and the
quality of products, for the selling of goods, for the acquisition of raw materials
and the founding of new workshops, etc. However, almost 500 years later,
the strict rules, which had the role to maintain the small manufactures at any
price, became an impediment in the economic evolution of the cities. Consequently,
by means of the decree in 1872, the guilds were transformed in crafts
enterprises, thus concluding an important page in the history of Sibiu.
During the 18 th century, the city becomes no different than other West
European cities, with imposing churches and buildings, in the Viennese
Baroque style. The city’s cultural life thus begins an extraordinary development,
music and theatre having an important place in the city life. Famous
musicians such as Franz Liszt and Johann Strauss sustained concerts on the
stages in Sibiu in the 19 th century. Following the union of Transylvania with
Romania (in 1918), major changes occurred in the city life, especially in the
city planning domain and in the social and cultural fields; education in the
Romanian language also develops and the main modern cultural institutions
were founded during the next period: The State Theatre (1947) and the State
Philharmonics (1949). The instauration of communism after 1945 brought
along a forced industrialization process, numerous set backs from the point of
view of city planning being recorded in consequence.
In 2007 Sibiu held the title of European Capital of
Culture, thus succeeding in highlighting its extremely
valuable cultural and historical heritage.
Following this event, the city’s image significantly
improved, foreign visitors placing Sibiu among
the top five European Capitals of Culture.
This confirms the fact that Sibiu left a powerful
positive impression and has the necessary potential
to maintain its statute of cultural touristic destination
of European importance.
Following the
footsteps of the guilds
1
Sibiu is magic indeed. For those who live here, for those who visit it, for those who
read or learn about it and for those who discover it. The first hospital, the first school,
the first library and the first pharmacy in Romania functioned in Sibiu. This is where
the first books were printed, whether religious,
scientific or manuals. The rocket
was invented in Sibiu and this is also where
tellurium was discovered. Great minds of
Transylvania and the entire Romania and
world famous personalities lived and created
here in Sibiu.
To discover its charm and stories, you
need to roam around the streets, pass
every wall and go by every house in Sibiu.
Find out the history of medieval times
guildsmen in the Goldsmiths Square (Piaţa
Aurarilor), learn about those who fought
for their rights and liberties on Mitropoliei
Street, hear the stories of those who
defended and saved this city on Cetăţii
Street, learn about the landlers on Bielz
Street and on Gladiolelor Street and Raţiu
Street find out how Habsburg emperors named the baroque neighborhoods
after them: Terezian or Josephine. To get a taste of all these by yourselves, we
dare to invite you to take a walk with us through the city of Sibiu. Through this
tour we invite you to discover Sibiu through the eyes of guilds and guildsmen,
the places they built or they perfected. Crossing every street and every square
we will try to present each location in Sibiu which, one way or the other, is
connected to their activity during a period of over 600 years.
The Small Square
The Small Square was the center of
the guilds’ existence and was born
out of the need of craftsmen and
tradesmen to protect themselves,
their merchandise and the pro-ducts
they created. The Small Square area
was fortified at the beginning of the
14th century. In time, the fortification
was replaced by buildings which
mostly belonged to the guilds
and the guildsmen. Here we discover the THE BRIDGE OF LIES (1) 1 . It is
the first cast iron bridge on the present day territory of Romania, made in
1859, ensuring the access from the Lower Town into the fortress. We have to
warn you that the legends connected to the name of this bridge say that it
squeaks every time someone crossing it tells a lie, threatening to break under
the “weight” of a bigger lie! We then head out attention to the houses: THE
BUTCHER’S HALL (the present day House of Arts) 2 (no. 21, Small Square).
The butchers’ guild is one of the oldest in Sibiu and also one of the most
important and wealthiest such organizations. This building stands out among
the guilds’ houses situated in the
Small Square, being first mentioned
in documents in 1370. In the 18 th
century the house was used by the
community as a theatre hall. The
coat of arms of Sibiu and the year on
the front piece of the building are a
proof of the moment in which the
building enters in the administration
of the Magistrate. Starting with 2004,
the building is part of the ASTRA
National Museum Complex. If we go
inside the HOUSE AT NO. 22 3
we will discover the so-called “Fresco
Hall”, where a series of priceless mural
paintings can be admired, impeccably
restored and dating from 1631. THE
TOWER OF THE GOLDSMITHS’
LADDER 4 , (no. 24, Small Square) is
one of the gate-towers of the Small Square. It makes the connection between
the Lower Town, a medieval road and the medieval fortification. The name
comes from its vicinity with the House of the Goldsmiths’ Guild, a guild
which apparently took care of this building’s maintenance. The House of the
Goldsmiths’ Guild (no. 25, Small Square) is one of the buildings raised on the
second fortification belt. The building has all the characteristics of a medieval
house and the coat of arms of the guild may be observed in the main room
of the building, situated on the first floor. Right next door we come across the
MUSEUM OF THE HISTORY OF PHARMACY (5) 5 (no. 26, Small Square).
The museum is situated on the ground floor where the “Black Bear” pharmacy
functioned over a period of three centuries, starting with the year 1600. A
commemorative plaque reminds us of Cristian Friedrich Samuel Hahnemann
(1755-1843), the father of homeopathy.
Reaching THE HOUSE AT NO.13, which dates from
the 15th century, we go through the arched passage of
the building, called the SHOEMAKERS’ PASSAGE 6 .
Here is a good example of the small routes connecting
the various streets and squares in the city. These
were essential at times of plagues or in case of a siege.
They bear the names of guilds due to the fact that most
of these passages or small streets were used by the
guildsmen in this area.
Huet Square
Going through the passage, we reach Huet Square, the
first fortified precinct of Sibiu which later became the
cultural and spiritual center of the fortress. The area is
dominated by one of the most impressive and representative
gothic buildings in Transylvania: THE “SAINT MARY” EVANGELIC
PARISH CHURCH , (no. 1, Huet Square). Built between the 14th and the
16th 7
century with the support of the guilds of quarriers, carpenters, blacksmiths,
goldsmiths and silversmiths, the building dominates due to its central
seven-story tower (the second highest tower in Transylvania), flanked by
other four smaller towers at the corners. The decorations of the church belong
to the great guilds’ maters of those times: Andreas Lapicida, Elias Nicolai and
Sebastian Hann. Starting with 1496, for a period of 300 years, the church
6
served as a burial place for the city’s
personalities and this is where Baron
Samuel von Brukenthal also found his
resting place.
In 1853 the tomb stones covering
the graves were dismantled from
the church navy and set within the
walls of the ferula, thus obtaining
a gallery of 67 tomb stones, unique
in the country. The statue of Bishop
Georg Daniel Teutsch, one of the
most significant personalities of the
Saxon community in Transylvania at
the end of the 18th century is situated
in the courtyard of the Evangelic
Church. Every Wednesday during the
summer season, the cathedral hosts
exquisite organ concerts. Leaving the Evangelic Church courtyard, stop for a
minute and admire the building at no. 2 on Samuel Brukenthal Street, an edifice
hosting the THE CITY HALL OF SIBIU . Even though this building is
not included in the category of medieval architecture, we suggested visiting
it due to the fact that it was built at the beginning of the 20th 8
8
century. You
will notice the special architectural style of the edifice. The façade displays
many figurative elements and the interior replicates motifs from the Jugendstil
repertoire. At the first floor you will find a wonderful stained glass in the Art
Nouveau style, and the entire hall way is decorated with Greek motifs and lion
heads. The restoration of the building was finalized in 2006, the local administration
currently unwinding its activity here.
The Large Square
Here we are in the Large Square, the center of the city. This is where the
guildsmen unwound their activity (fairs were organized here, goods were
produced and stored in this location). This is where most of the town fairs
used to take place, this is where public trials unwound, this is where religious
or military processions were organized and this is where the most
important events in the city life were celebrated. This was also the location
chosen by the rich to build their residences. Across the street from the City
Hall building you will discover the THE “BRUKENTHAL” PALACE
(no. 4, Large Square), the most representative edifice in Sibiu. A closed
plan with an inner courtyard was adopted for the construction of the building.
It is one of the most important works of baroque making in
Central Europe, preserving a series of elements of artistic carpentry, borders
and folds decorated in a Baroque style. Settle to admire its exterior for
today, because the wonderful art collections inside deserve at least one
day of your vacation. THE BLUE HOUSE (no. 5, Large Square) is situated
to the left of the Brukenthal Palace. The building dates from the 17th 9
10
century, but the Baroque style transformations begin only in 1773. For a
short period of time, between 1768 and 1783, the building hosted theatrical
performances. The name “The Blue House of the city” dates from 1819.
The old coat of arms of Sibiu is painted on the front of the house. THE
“SAINT TRINITY” ROMAN – CATHOLIC PARISH CHURCH 11 (no. 3,
Large Square) which dominates the South-Eastern part of the square was
built in the early Viennese Baroque style. Among the elements which impress
through their historical and artistic value, we mention here the fresco
representing Mary and the Baby made in a Baroque style in 1777, the
stained glass windows and the organ installed in 1860. Going past the
Church we see the THE COUNCIL TOWER (no. 1, Large Square). It is one
of the best known monuments of Sibiu and it became a symbol for the city. It
bears this name due to the fact that the old City Hall is situated right next door,
the building being mentioned in documents as early as 1324. Over time, the
tower had several uses: from grain storage to an observation deck for fires, a
prison or even a museum of natural sciences (at the middle of the 18th 12
century).
Across the street from the tower lies the THE WEIDNER-REUSSNER-
CZEKELIUS HOUSE 13 (no. 16, Large Square). The edifice bears the name
of those who owned it over time. A sculpted stone border dating from 1582
and representing the owner of the house at that time may be found in the
entrance alleyway. The main doorway also displays the motif present on the
Haller House, exhibiting in a central location the coat of arms of Mayor Johann
Reussner junior. The coat of arms is accompanied by the year “1652” and by a
monogram spelling “E.N.” (sculptor Elias Nicolai). THE LUTSCH HOUSE 14
(no. 13, Large Square) was built on the location where the headquarters of
the prepositure functioned before 1424. After this date, this building hosted
the high officials visiting Sibiu, among them being King Matei Corvin. THE
HALLER HOUSE 15 (no. 10, Large Square). The Renaissance style building
preserves several elements
15
of its original construction. The
house belonged to the Haller family
for a period of 354 years, from
1537 to 1891, when the last descendent
of the family sells it to
August Teutsch. Moving on, we find
THE HECHT HOUSE 16
(no. 8,
Large Square). The first security
printing office in Sibiu functioned
in this building in 1456. In 1472, the new owner, Mayor Georg Hecht, redecorates
the house in a Gothic style. A century later the house passes
into the property of Mayor Johann Waida, remaining in his family for 237
years. He will bring a few alterations in the Renaissance style. Saxon local
administrators lived here for a long time and in 1821 the building was
bought by the Saxon University. Next door we find THE GENERALS’
HOUSE , (no 7, Large Square). The building dates from the 15th century,
over time entering in the possession of the several of the city’s
personalities. In 1779 the building was purchased by the Magistracy
and later on, between 1784 and 1904, the General commander of the
Austrian Troops in Transylvania had his headquarters here. This is the reason
why the house is called “The Generals’ House”. Then we go through
the arched access way of the Generals’ House and we reach Arhivelor
Street where, on the left side we see THE STATE ARCHIVES . The
first steps in organizing an archive in Sibiu were taken as early as the
14th century. An important part of what we call today the Archives of
Sibiu is formed of the guilds’ documents in Sibiu: their statute, their records
and their contracts. In 1911 steps were taken in the direction of
building a new space for the archive. The building was inaugurated in
1923, after Transylvania’s union to Romania. The building preserves the
archives of the Saxon nation, those of the Magistrate and the Gathering
of the centumviri. We continue our walk through the Schiller Square and
further on to the Tipografilor Street and Alexandru Papiu Ilarian Street
until we reach THE WALL ON CETĂŢII STREET . This wall preserves
its aspect dating from the second half of the 15th 17
18
19
century, when it was
rehabilitated in brick and a guard road was created.
Cetăţii Street is flanked by three defense towers which belong to the third
fortification belt. They bear the names of the guilds responsible with
their construction, their maintenance and repair works: the Carpenters’
Tower, the Potters’ Tower and the Harquebusiers’ Tower. The three
towers are very different from the point of view of their architecture, being
built in different time periods and due to the fact that every guild
tried to imprint its specific style. THE HARQUEBUSIERS’ TOWER ,
was built on an octagonal foundation. It later changed its name into the
Weavers’ Tower, after the guild caring for it. It is the Southern most of
the three towers. It has the shape of an octagonal prism and the firing
holes on the first floor are shaped as a key hole. The construction has a
stone base (up to the height of 1 meter) and then it continues upward in
brick masonry. THE POTTERS’ TOWER , was built in stone in the 15th 20
21
century and was consolidated a century later. The tower belonged to the
guild of the potters, has a rectangular shape and five harquebus firing
locations are placed around it. The guild of the carpenters was responsible
for the THE CARPENTERS’ TOWER 22 . It is a construction which
was built on a circular shape, separated by a pronounced cornice. From
this level up, the tower has the shape of an octagonal prism, concluded
in its superior part by the classic standing out section, sustained by consoles
with burned oil muzzles between its arches. THE THICK TOWER
23 (no. 5, Cetăţii Street), built in 1540, was part of the series of defense
rondeaux of the fortress, displaying several defensive levels and being
considered a genuine “war machine”. After 1788, when the tower lost its
military defensive role, the space was reconfigured in order to host the
first theatre in town. The interior of the tower was used as a stage in front
of which a hall was built. The first cinema projection in Sibiu took place
here in 1898. Recently renovated, the whole ensemble is known under
the name of Thalia Hall, serving as the State Philharmonics in Sibiu today.
We continue our walk on Pompeiu Onofreiu Street until we reach the
THE HALLER BASTION 24
. Dating from 1552, it is built of brick and
filled with earth. The walls have a total length of 223 meters and 9 me-
ters in height. In 1771 a horse riding school (manege) was built on the
bastion, and the building hosting the present day Neurology Hospital
was erected here during the first decade of the 20th century. We go up
Manejului Street and we make
a left on Şelarilor Street where
we discover close together THE
FRANCISCAN CHURCH AND
MONASTERY . The exterior
Gothic aspect corresponds in the
interior, a hall type church, built in
a late Baroque style. The Church,
initially erected during the first
half of the 15th 25
century for the Clarisse
nuns, was turned over to the
Franciscan monks in 1716. The
stone funerary monument of count
general Damian Hugo von Virmond (1666-1722) will head your attention
towards the Northern wall of the church choir. The central part of the
monument displays a commemorative inscription and the inferior part,
the sarcophagus, is decorated with the allegory of Victory. Go through
the passage nearby the church and you will reach the General Gheorghe
Magheru Street where you will see the THE CHURCH OF THE FORMER
URSULINE MONASTERY 26 . The Dominican monastery was built here
in 1479, but in 1543, along with the religious reform which determined
the majority of the Saxon population to embrace the Lutheran religion,
the monastery passed in the possession of this religious group. The
Ursuline nuns took it over in 1755. Our walk will continue on Felinarului
Street and Movilei Street, thus entering the Lower Town, the area where
most of the guildsmen used to live. The most eloquent proofs of this fact
are the names of the streets, most of these taking the names of the
old guilds. THE GOLDSMITHS SQUARE . It is one of the oldest
squares in the Lower Town and it formed at the intersection of several
medieval roads. A pipe fountain could be found here as early as 1496.
The Goldsmiths’ Passage, one of the most romantic places in Sibiu,
makes the connection with the House of the Goldsmiths’ Guild situated
in the Small Square. It’s time we left this small square via
Argintarilor Street and reach THE 9 MAI STREET , the oldest street
in the city. This street bore the name of Elisabeta Street for a long time.
Seven buildings which were declared historical monuments may be
admired on this street (the houses at numbers 14, 22, 30, 36, 43, 75
and 83).
The intersection of THE 9 MAI STREET with OCNEI STREET , is
considered the center of the Lower Town. The location where the
first houses appeared was named Dragoner Square. Until 1976,
the building hosting the headquarters of the Austrian dragons was
placed in the middle, under the shape of an island. We then turn on
VOPSITORILOR STREET and we discover a typical guild street.
This is where most of the workshops of the dyers’ guild were situated.
At no. 13 we find the oldest house in the area, dating from the
15th century and having all the elements of a workshop house. The
gate has the original decoration - a representation of a solar disc.
The road further takes us on the past scented streets: Plopilor Street,
Victor Tordoşanu Street, Târgul Vinului Street, Cojocarilor Street and
then we enter ARMELOR (WEAPONS’) SQUARE where we find
the building of the former arsenal (the Kempel Barrack). Dating from
the 18th century, it was erected on the foundations of a building in
the 15th century. A defense tower was integrated in the north-western
part in 1457, this building being part of the 4th 27
The building west of the tower belonged in the 15th century to local
administrator Tobias Hetzeldorfer. The part looking onto the square
was rebuilt in 1784. During the Austrian occupation, the building
functioned as an inn, then as an arsenal, then a hospital and then as a
barrack. We go up on Centumvirilor Street and we continue our walk
reaching Alexandru Odobescu Street, through the THE STAIRS’
PASSAGE 32 or the “The Arched Wall”, connecting the Upper Town
with the Lower Town through two ramifications of stairs and arcades
which circle the fortress walls around the Evangelic Church. The west
side of the Passage is part of the wall which belonged to the second
fortification belt.
We then go up towards the THE STAIRS’ TOWER , the only one
of the three access gates in the first fortification precinct which was
preserved. The tower was built in the 13th 33
century, being the oldest
edifice preserved in Sibiu. Its present day form dates from 1542. It is
made of brick, it is one story high, with an arched crossing at the first
level through which we reach the stairs which connect the “Upper
Town” with the “Lower Town”.
And here we are again in the Huet Square where we stop for a moment
at the THE APPRENTICES’ HOUSE 34 (no. 3, Huet Square).
This is the first house belonging to apprentices which is situated outside
the borders of Germany, Switzerland or France. An old law of
the guildsmen in Europe says that, when they become apprentices,
they must take a journey – an initiation in the life experience and an
experience in the craft they chose. Today, Sibiu continues this tradition
as well, being the Eastern most city where an apprentices’ house
is preserved and where apprentices can rest during their journey.
Apprentices worked together with various organizations and countries
in order to renovate it, and traveling apprentices can work here
within the workshops organized every summer. Cetăţii Street hosts
demonstrations of craftsmanship, the street thus transforming in a
small village of the guilds. On the other side of the tower we see the
THE EVANGELIC PARISH HOUSE (no. 1, Huet Square). It is built
of four distinct bodies, each of them erected during different periods
of time. The façade of this building is important due to the decorative
artistic elements. The doorway, made by the great master of the quarriers’
guild, sculptor Andreas Lapicida, is typical for the transition between
the Gothic and the Renaissance style. The building underwent
modifications at the beginning of the 19 th 35
century, but during the last
years extensive restoration works were carried out, revealing two mural
paintings with a religious character and a coat of arms belonging
to Matei Corvin, king of Hungary at that time.
Continue your walk and don’t be shy in opening old gates, discover
mysterious passage ways and narrow streets, reminding of past and
history. Stop and have dinner at one of the open air terraces in the
Small Square, in a peaceful atmosphere. Take your time in exploring
the old city and soak in its paradoxical youth and the youth of people
living and enlivening it. You will then discover more things which will
convince you once again that staying in Sibiu was the right decision.
FEBRUARY
„The Carnival of the Lole”
An old Saxon tradition, the carnival brings
together all the guilds represented in
Agnita, a town in the county of Sibiu. The
tradition of the Lole is characteristic for
the carnival period, rooting deep in the
guilds’ activity. Having the role to lead the
craftsmen’ associations, the guilds organized
elections for the appointing of a new guildmaster every year, in the
last Sunday of the month of January. A carnival is organized on this occasion
(the last Sunday of January or the first Sunday of February), celebrating
the tradition of the handing over to the new guildmaster the dowry
crate (Laden forttragen) together with all the documents of the guilds. The
whole procession is accompanied by the Lole
(Urzeln) – amusing characters who had the role to
protect and accompany the crates to the place they
were deposited for safekeeping – a fact which preserved
the stability of the guilds until next year, on
the occasion of the Lord’s Baptism Holiday.
The Lole Parade will take place in Sibiu as well.
Presented to the public in the official section of the Festival in
Edinburgh, where Ofelia Popii received the prize for best actress
interpretation, “Faust” is an exceptional performance due to the
director’s perspective and the complexity of the parts presented
in a baroque construction mastered to the smallest and most defining
details: set and light design of an impressive plastic force,
daringly suggestive costumes, whether elegant or burlesque,
engaging or overwhelming music with sound effects adequate
to this extravagant ambiance, ingenious video projections and
very realistically articulated in the architecture of the entire stage
The history of the urban development of Sibiu is closely connected to
the emerging and the development of the guilds. From the point of view
those in other Saxon cities or central European cities. At the present, the
Brukenthal Museum collections include over 2000 exhibits belonging to
the guilds and brotherhoods of apprentices dating from the 14 th to the
The basic exhibition entitled “Transylvanian Tiles. The 15 th to 19 th century” offers
an ampler and more generous perspective over the multi-cultural nature of the
Transylvanian space, over the communion, cohabitation and cooperation relationship
which has been going on for centuries between Romanians, Saxons and
Hungarians in Transylvania. A number of 326 tiles are presented chronologically,
taking into account the work techniques which were used to produce them, starting
with those dating from the 15 th century, not enameled, with biblical, mythical representations,
representing fantastic animals, to the tiles produced in the 19 th century,
enameled in green and painted polychromic with cobalt blue, green, yellow and
brown. The most beautiful and valuable tiles from the Renaissance period which
exist in the museum’s collections are those with catholic representations: Madona,
Hristofor, The Virgin Mary holding Baby Jesus, Saint George slaying the dragon, and
also the fur tile in a late Transylvanian gothic style. The tiles with heraldic motifs,
the Habane tiles from Vinţu de Jos, the tiles made in the sgrafito and kerchief in
cobalt blue technique and those made with led and tin enamel produced in Braşov
also have a great artistic value. Three complete stoves, a Saxon stove from Drăuşeni,
Braşov county dated 1891, a Hungarian stove produced in the second half of the 19 th
century by potter Beretzky Zsigmond from Chişmed, Harghita county and a Romanian
one dating from the 19th century originating in Poienii de Sus, Bihor county.
Holy Communion. These were created between the 14 th and the 18 th century
