„The Carnival of the Lole”<br />
An old Saxon tradition, the carnival brings<br />
together all the guilds represented in<br />
Agnita, a town in the county of <strong>Sibiu</strong>. The<br />
tradition of the Lole is characteristic for<br />
the carnival period, rooting deep in the<br />
guilds’ activity. Having the role to lead the<br />
craftsmen’ associations, the guilds organized<br />
elections for the appointing of a new guildmaster every year, in the<br />
last Sunday of the month of January. A carnival is organized on this occasion<br />
(the last Sunday of January or the first Sunday of February), celebrating<br />
the tradition of the handing over to the new guildmaster the dowry<br />
crate (Laden forttragen) together with all the documents of the guilds. The<br />
whole procession is accompanied by the Lole<br />
(Urzeln) – amusing characters who had the role to<br />
protect and accompany the crates to the place they<br />
were deposited for safekeeping – a fact which preserved<br />
the stability of the guilds until next year, on<br />
the occasion of the Lord’s Baptism Holiday.<br />
The Lole Parade will take place in <strong>Sibiu</strong> as well.<br />
