During the 18 th century, the city becomes no different than other West
European cities, with imposing churches and buildings, in the Viennese
Baroque style. The city’s cultural life thus begins an extraordinary development,
music and theatre having an important place in the city life. Famous
musicians such as Franz Liszt and Johann Strauss sustained concerts on the
stages in Sibiu in the 19 th century. Following the union of Transylvania with
Romania (in 1918), major changes occurred in the city life, especially in the
city planning domain and in the social and cultural fields; education in the
Romanian language also develops and the main modern cultural institutions
were founded during the next period: The State Theatre (1947) and the State
Philharmonics (1949). The instauration of communism after 1945 brought
along a forced industrialization process, numerous set backs from the point of
view of city planning being recorded in consequence.
In 2007 Sibiu held the title of European Capital of
Culture, thus succeeding in highlighting its extremely
valuable cultural and historical heritage.
Following this event, the city’s image significantly
improved, foreign visitors placing Sibiu among
the top five European Capitals of Culture.
This confirms the fact that Sibiu left a powerful
positive impression and has the necessary potential
to maintain its statute of cultural touristic destination
of European importance.
