“ My father is an alcoholic and our family falls<br />

under the BPL category. Because of this, I could<br />

not study beyond class 12. With help from the<br />

BILT CSR project, and training and financial<br />

assistance from the Horticulture Department,<br />

I took up mushroom cultivation. In 2010-11, I<br />

sold mushrooms worth Rs. 37,595/- with a net<br />

profit of Rs. 13,885/- in just four months. I was<br />

conferred the ‘Best Entrepreneur Award’ by the<br />

Horticulture Department, Yamuna Nagar, in<br />

2010. ”<br />

“ SFI has changed the way I think. It has made<br />

me more confident by training me and my group<br />

members to run our handicraft business on a<br />

small scale from a remote village. Without SFI’s<br />

help, I would not have known about Malaysian<br />

craft and the opportunities available. Now I<br />

travel even to far off places like Kuala Lumpur<br />

to sell handicraft items. This supplements our<br />

family income substantially. We don’t depend<br />

solely on farm produce to survive now. I am very<br />

thankful to SFI-BILT for helping us improve our<br />

lives. ”<br />

“ My family and I have one acre of unused upland and only<br />

0.8 acres of arable land. Even though I cultivated paddy in<br />

the 0.8 acres of land to meet our food requirement, it was<br />

not sufficient.<br />

In 2008-09, on the advice of the CSR team, I tried<br />

maize cultivation in the Rabi season. From that 0.8 acres<br />

of land, I made a net profit of Rs. 10,000/-. In the 2010<br />

Kharif season, I took three acres of land on lease for maize<br />

cultivation, which yielded 81 quintals. I sold the dry maize<br />

to the poultry co-operative feed mill at Rs. 9/kg and made<br />

a net profit of Rs. 66,080 /- in just four months. Maize<br />

cultivation not only provided good returns, but was also a<br />

source of staple food round the year.<br />

Now I motivate other farmers to take up maize cultivation<br />

and am also planning to purchase land to increase the<br />

maize cultivation area. ”
