ACOP 88 All trainee divers undergoinga diver competence assessment will
be taught andassessed for:
(a) the first-aid qualification to the standardprescribedin
paragraph87. On successful completion theywill be issued with a
first aid atwork certificate;
(b) the reasonsfor and ways ofgiving oxygen. Suchtraining will be
provided at the diver training organisation.On successful
completion, they will beissued with acertificatein oxygen
administration.
89 Boththese qualifications will bevalidforthreeyears. There is no
legal obligation on divers to attend refresher coursesor to renew the
qualifications ifthey do not wish to do so.
90 Fordivingunder this Code, the supervisorand at leastone diver
in each dive team shouldbe qualified in first aidto the standard
prescribedin paragraph 87. The supervisorshouldberesponsiblefor
arrangingtheir dutiessothat one ofthemshould be able to administer
first aid, should it be needed, to a member ofthe diveteam inan
emergency.
91 The diving contractor'srisk assessment, which shouldbe carried
out before the start ofthe diving project, should considerwhether
additionalmembersofthe dive team needto be qualified in first aid.
In particular the assessmentshouldtake into accountthe type of
diving tobe undertaken,the tools andtechniquesto be used,the size
ofthe dive team and the distance of the dive site from emergency
services. The Health and Safety (First-Aid)Regulations 1981 Approved
Code ofPractice sets out additionaladvice for thoseareas where
special additionaltraining may be necessaryto coverless common
risks.
92 The diving contractor should providefirst-aid equipmentto the
standard set down in the Health and Safety (First-Aid) Regulations
6(3)(a) 1981 Approved Code ofPractice.
