signatures with some worming in foremargin.
First separate edition of this description of the late eighteenth century country
school system together with a proposal for the introduction of special
schools for industry and manufacturing. The text was also included in the
Krünitz’sche Oekonomisch-technologisch Enzyklopädie, the most detailed encyclopaedia
ever to be published in the German language. The so-called
Industrieschule is run in conjunction with the normal country school. Pupils
take part in some of the instruction of the ‘normal’ school, but then train for
diVerent professions, such as weaving, spinning etc, or to prepare girls for
positions in domestic service. Krünitz adds reports from a large number of
such schools, from all over Germany.

First edition of La Farelle’s inXuential study of the organisation of industrial
labour in France. In the Wrst section he gives an historical overview and
outlines the legislation which led to the abolition of ancient corporations,
with their systems of masters and journeymen. In the second he proposes a
reorganisation of the labour force through a Wfty-point program. He aims
to ‘distribute oYcially through the agency of administrative authority all
merchants, artisans, and workmen of the industrial classes and professions
either in societies or in diVerent localities’ (Palgrave II, p. 532). The extensive
appendices cover labour legislation in diVerent parts of the world.

First edition, one of two issues, of this treatise on taxation and tax farming.
La Mothe Le Vayer proposes the introduction of a single tax, just like the
physiocrats, as a means of Wscal convenience, necessity and justice at a time
when the proXigacy of the court was Wnanced at the expense of the peasantry.
The author cites from a number of contemporary authors and argues
that only a tax on land can be just. He suggests the establishment of a reliable
cadastre, to assess values appropriately. Location and use were to be
used in the assessment of the relevant tax code, which would then be applicable
to all, including the nobility and the church.
Another edition, also with a ‘Londres’ imprint but with with a diVerent
collation, was published the same year; no priority has been ascribed.

privilège du roi, some light marginal browning; one signature slightly
loosened in gutter; last leaf with faint damp stain; contemporary full
mottled sheep, spine gilt in compartments, joints cracked, but holding
Wrm; clearly a copy that has been put to use, but still a good copy with a
contemporary inscription in ink to advertisement leaf ‘à mon père
Gouzé(?)’.
