the rule of grand duke Leopold (1765–1790). A lengthy preface which is
attributed to Vicenzo Mugnai outlines the history of Tuscan tariVs and customs,
quoting from Hume and Muratori, and stresses greater equality in
the new tax codes, where old privileges have been abolished. The tax on
commodities is divided into separate categories, direct tariVs collected by
the Exchequer, customs, special taxes and tariVs due to other public accounts,
and local taxes. The extensive taxation tables give a fascinating insight
into the great variety of merchandise, which was produced in
Tuscany, imported and exported.

foxing; entirely uncut and partly unopened in the original blue
wrappers, small section of spine covering missing, a very good copy.
First edition, rare, of the Wrst Swedish printers’ manual, in fact the Swedish
translation of Täubel’s Praktisches Handbuch der Buchdruckerkunst für
Anfänger, Wrst published in 1791, and here adapted to Swedish practice.
Part I gives a brief history of European printing, and covers format, composition,
including the setting of music, correction, and press work. The
second volume is taken up by an alphabetical dictionary of printing terms,
with detailed practical information. This is followed by an orthographical
dictionary, some information on grammar, common abbreviations, and a
Swedish glossary. The work concludes with the ceremonial for receiving
new members into the guild of printers.

First edition in Italian, uncommon, of Taylor’s inXuential introduction to
shorthand. Amanti adaptation was the Wrst of a number of Italian
modiWcations of the original system.

305 [TEXTILE INDUSTRY – FRANCE.] Collection of 25 titles
pertaining to the discussions concerning the production of coloured
and colour printed fabrics in France, and the prohibition of their
export and the import of foreign cloth, during the period 1686–
1789. £1800
Twenty-Wve separate works, 4to and folio, including broadsides,
disbound and loosely collected in a protective folder.
An interesting collection of partly original Paris editions, partly provincial
editions, of regulations pertaining to the production and commerce of
French cloth, i.e. cotton, silk and wool, both colour-dyed and colourprinted,
and the limitations applicable to the importation of foreign cloth,
which conXicted with the interest of the French East India Company. This
collection is of particular interest, as the textile industry was the dominant
industry before the nineteenth century, and ‘modern’ production methods
and technical advances were Wrst introduced in this industry. The production
of cloth was the subject of an important debate in the 18th century
which divided France in two opposing camps and in which some of the
most illustrious 18th century economists participated. This collection illustrates
part of the debate between Colbert’s protectionism, mercantilism and
free trade (Morellet).
