First edition of this comprehensive practical treatise on taxidermy,
speciWcally aimed at those preparing and supplying zoological specimens
and cabinets of curiosities. The ten folding plates, drawn by Marechal and
Wnely engraved by Sellier, show tools and equipment, and animals in various
stages of preparation. Nicolas (1743–1816) had been a professor of
chemistry and natural history.
The work was popular and was translated into German in 1802.

a Wne copy preserved in a wooden box; from the library of Horatio
Walpole with his book plate on front pastedown.
Second issue (Wrst 1720–21) of the Wrst collected edition of the essays and
social aperçus of Johan Thuresson Oxenstierna (1666–1733), nephew of
Axel Oxenstierna, the Swedish chancellor. His brief, precise essays and
aphorisms on a wide range of subjects earned him a signiWcant international
reputation and the epithet ‘Montaigne of the North’ (Hoefer).
This copy comes from the library of Horatio Walpole, (1813–1894), 4th
Earl of Orford, a descendent of Horace Walpole’s cousin (see Hazen, p.
xxvi). The bookplate is an extremely close imitation of Walpole’s Orford
bookplate.
Hoefer XXXVIII, 1018; this is generally regarded as the Wrst collected edition, even
though there appears to be an earlier printing of 1720–21; OCLC lists just one
copy at the Bodleian Library, RLIN adds a copy at the University of Chicago, together
with a number of later editions in 1744, 1749 and 1762; a German translation
was published in 1738, a Russian translation in 1792; see Hazen, Walpole’s
Library, p. xxvi.

First edition of Palissot’s popular satire on the encyclopédistes, coming at the
beginning of a whole spate of attacks on philosophes. Palissot attacked the
encyclopédistes for slavishly following Bacon, made fun of their sensitivity to
criticism, accused them of becoming a ‘church’, and in passing also attacked
d’Alembert for accepting a pension from France’s enemy Frederick the
Great. The dramatist Palissot (1730–1814) was a renegade from the
philosophe camp and a protégé of the highly inXuential Comte de Stainville,
later Duc de Choiseul.
