Overall, <strong>Northwestern</strong> researchers submitted a lower<br />

volume of proposals—in dollar amount—in <strong>2011</strong><br />

compared with 2010. The total dollar volume of proposals<br />

submitted in <strong>2011</strong> fell 7 percent to $1.9 billion, down from<br />

$2.05 billion in 2010. The number of proposals, however,<br />

rose by 1 percent to 2,875 in <strong>2011</strong> from 2,823 in 2010.<br />

Many of the schools and colleges saw increases in the<br />

dollar volume of proposals, including Kellogg, 57.5<br />

percent ($1.6 million); McCormick, 22 percent ($58.5<br />

million); Law, 35.8 percent ($ 0.9 million); Communication,<br />

104.8 percent ($34.9 million); Bienen, 76.6 percent<br />

($0.09 million); and Weinberg, 1.9 percent ($4.3 million).<br />

Proposal activity increased signi�cantly in the Graduate<br />

School. The <strong>University</strong> Library also saw a signi�cant<br />

increase in proposal activity, re�ecting its merger with<br />

the <strong>University</strong> Press in 2010. Decreases were seen in<br />

Feinberg of 9.4 percent ($116.9 million), in Medill of 70.3<br />

percent ($1.1 million), in research centers and institutes<br />

of 59.3 percent ($125.8 million), and in the School of<br />

Education and Social Policy of 6.5 percent ($2.1 million).<br />

In FY<strong>2011</strong> the overall dollar volume of proposals<br />

submitted to the federal government increased by<br />

11 percent ($198.9 million). Submissions to industrial<br />

sponsors also rose, by 7 percent ($2.9 million). Proposals<br />

to state and local government bodies rose by 42 percent<br />

($0.2 million), while those to state of Illinois agencies rose<br />

by less than 1 percent ($0.01 million).<br />
