EXTERNAL METRICS<br />
<strong>Northwestern</strong> had a mixed year in terms of rankings<br />
of federal awards <strong>for</strong> 2010 data (data from federal<br />
agencies lag by one year). In volume of 2010 awards <strong>for</strong><br />
universities, <strong>Northwestern</strong> remains 25th in the National<br />
Institutes of Health (NIH) rankings and dropped to<br />
45th from 30th in the rankings of National Science<br />

a greater length of time, however, the trend in research<br />
volume at the <strong>University</strong> has been positive. Since 2001<br />
<strong>Northwestern</strong>’s funding from the NIH has increased by<br />
71.8 percent to $191.2 million, while funding from the<br />
NSF has increased by 21.7 percent to $35.9 million.
