(Oklahoma Christian University), Sheryl John (University <strong>of</strong> Southern California) Abstract: The objective <strong>of</strong> this panel is to explore trends <strong>in</strong> the<br />

use <strong>of</strong> Internet technologies and social media for advocacy and activism <strong>of</strong> social causes, explore a diverse set <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>ternet activism case studies,<br />

discuss<strong>in</strong>g the pros and cons <strong>of</strong> approaches and critically exam<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g the effectiveness <strong>of</strong> each. Speakers will provide ideas, guidance and advice<br />

Nasser (Hewlett Packard), Suka<strong>in</strong>a Al Nasrawi (United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia) Abstract: Arab countries are<br />

witness<strong>in</strong>g a rise <strong>in</strong> female participation <strong>in</strong> the ICT sector; however this rise rema<strong>in</strong>s modest and varies from one country to another. This panel<br />

will explore the status <strong>of</strong> ICT sector <strong>in</strong> the region, opportunities, and challenges fac<strong>in</strong>g Arab technical women. It will also share the personal<br />

experiences <strong>of</strong> technical Arab women who experienced Tech<strong>Women</strong> 2011, participated <strong>in</strong> GHC2011 and received its Tech<strong>Women</strong> Change Agent<br />

Scholars Award.<br />

Presenters: Chiu-Ki Chan (Square Island LLC), Rupa Dachere (CodeChix.org), Christ<strong>in</strong>a Schulman (Google) Abstract: If there was a time mach<strong>in</strong>e,<br />

we would go back and tell ourselves these valuable lessons we learned as we <strong>prog</strong>ressed through our careers. Fail<strong>in</strong>g that, we can pass that<br />

knowledge onto the younger generation now. Come hear us share stories about how we acknowledged and overcame our ignorance to get the<br />

hang <strong>of</strong> real-world s<strong>of</strong>tware eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g: identify<strong>in</strong>g the right job, negotiat<strong>in</strong>g salaries, surviv<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong>fice politics, and pr<strong>of</strong>essional network<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

(Bowie State University) Abstract: Enrollment <strong>of</strong> women <strong>in</strong> CS <strong>prog</strong>rams has risen, but the percentage <strong>of</strong> m<strong>in</strong>ority students has not <strong>in</strong>creased.<br />

Research shows students form op<strong>in</strong>ions about science or non-science subjects as early as middle school and make college course selections<br />

based on their <strong>in</strong>terests. This panel is for anyone <strong>in</strong>terested <strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>g the representation <strong>of</strong> women <strong>of</strong> color <strong>in</strong> CS and shap<strong>in</strong>g how CS<br />

engages girls and women <strong>of</strong> color dur<strong>in</strong>g K-12.<br />
