Presenter: Jane Margolis Abstract: Despite the uptick <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>terest <strong>in</strong> computer science, the numbers <strong>of</strong> women majors are still abysmally small. I<br />

will reflect on why this is the case, mak<strong>in</strong>g connections to the issues raised <strong>in</strong> the last decade s<strong>in</strong>ce the publication <strong>of</strong> Unlock<strong>in</strong>g the Clubhouse. I<br />

will also reflect on how underrepresentation <strong>in</strong> comput<strong>in</strong>g relates to larger issues we face as world citizens and the upcom<strong>in</strong>g national elections.<br />

Recruitment Practices to Engage Female Interest <strong>in</strong> Comput<strong>in</strong>g BCC: 314-315 ACADEMIC<br />

Presenters: Dawn Laux (Purdue University), Alka Harriger (Purdue University) Abstract: Identify<strong>in</strong>g the best way to recruit women <strong>in</strong>to the<br />

discipl<strong>in</strong>e <strong>of</strong> comput<strong>in</strong>g is an ongo<strong>in</strong>g challenge. To ensure quality <strong>of</strong> <strong>prog</strong>ramm<strong>in</strong>g, the development <strong>of</strong> a packaged set <strong>of</strong> ‘Monday morn<strong>in</strong>g’<br />

ready activities is an important characteristic for broader dissem<strong>in</strong>ation and use among the audience. For any department seek<strong>in</strong>g to improve<br />

enrollment through outreach <strong>prog</strong>rams, special attention should be given to the areas <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>structional technology, facilities, personnel and<br />

feedback analysis.<br />

A. Richard Newton Educator Award W<strong>in</strong>ner: Barbara Ericson (Georgia Tech College <strong>of</strong> Comput<strong>in</strong>g) Abstract: How do you change comput<strong>in</strong>g<br />

education <strong>in</strong> K-12 for an entire state? Barbara Ericson has been try<strong>in</strong>g to do just that s<strong>in</strong>ce 2004 <strong>in</strong> Georgia. Come learn about: policy changes,<br />

curriculum changes, summer comput<strong>in</strong>g camps, weekend workshops for students, teacher workshops, a lend<strong>in</strong>g library, grow<strong>in</strong>g teacher leaders,<br />

and competitions. These efforts have <strong>in</strong>creased the number and diversity <strong>of</strong> students who are exposed to comput<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> Georgia.<br />
