Nora Denzel was most recently Intuit’s senior vice president lead<strong>in</strong>g the company’s big data and social design<br />

<strong>in</strong>itiatives, and the central market<strong>in</strong>g organization. “Big Data” is the emerg<strong>in</strong>g science <strong>of</strong> creat<strong>in</strong>g, organiz<strong>in</strong>g<br />

and analyz<strong>in</strong>g very large datasets to ga<strong>in</strong> new <strong>in</strong>sights and use <strong>in</strong>formation efficiently. In this role, she was<br />

responsible for establish<strong>in</strong>g, direct<strong>in</strong>g and implement<strong>in</strong>g Intuit’s data strategy, and quickly convert<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>formation <strong>in</strong>to<br />

a competitive advantage through the company’s social design and central market<strong>in</strong>g <strong>prog</strong>rams.<br />

Denzel jo<strong>in</strong>ed Intuit <strong>in</strong> 2008, serv<strong>in</strong>g as senior vice president and general manager <strong>of</strong> the company’s<br />

Employee Management Solutions Bus<strong>in</strong>ess Unit which provides easy to use payroll and employee benefit<br />

services to more than one million small bus<strong>in</strong>esses. Previously, she was senior vice president <strong>of</strong> Hewlett-<br />

Packard’s global s<strong>of</strong>tware bus<strong>in</strong>ess, where she led the division to double-digit growth and pr<strong>of</strong>itability. Earlier,<br />

Denzel served as senior vice president <strong>of</strong> product operations at Legato Systems Inc., now a division <strong>of</strong> EMC.<br />

She began her career as an eng<strong>in</strong>eer at IBM and advanced quickly to executive positions dur<strong>in</strong>g her 13 year<br />

tenure with the company.<br />

She serves on the board <strong>of</strong> directors for Overland Storage Inc. and the Anita Borg Institute, which provides<br />

resources and <strong>prog</strong>rams to help <strong>in</strong>dustry, academia and government recruit, reta<strong>in</strong> and develop women leaders <strong>in</strong><br />

high-tech fields. Denzel earned her bachelor’s degree <strong>in</strong> computer science from the State University <strong>of</strong> New York and<br />

a Masters <strong>of</strong> Bus<strong>in</strong>ess Adm<strong>in</strong>istration from Santa Clara University.<br />

Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Jones is a University Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Emerita at the University <strong>of</strong> Virg<strong>in</strong>ia and a Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> Computer<br />

Science <strong>in</strong> the School <strong>of</strong> Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g and Applied Science. The Honorable Anita K. Jones was sworn <strong>in</strong> as<br />

the Director <strong>of</strong> Defense Research and Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g for the U.S. Department <strong>of</strong> Defense <strong>in</strong> June 1993. In<br />

that position she was responsible for the management <strong>of</strong> the DoD science and technology <strong>prog</strong>ram. This <strong>in</strong>cluded<br />

responsibility for the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency and oversight <strong>of</strong> the DoD laboratories.<br />

Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Jones is past vice-chair <strong>of</strong> the National Science Board, which oversees the National Science<br />

Foundation. She is a senior fellow <strong>of</strong> the Defense Science Board, a member <strong>of</strong> the Charles Stark Draper<br />

Laboratory Corporation, and a past member <strong>of</strong> the MIT Corporation Executive Committee. She is a member<br />

<strong>of</strong> the National Academy <strong>of</strong> Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g, the American Philosophical Society, and a Fellow <strong>of</strong> the Association<br />

for Comput<strong>in</strong>g Mach<strong>in</strong>ery, the Institute <strong>of</strong> Electrical and Electronics Eng<strong>in</strong>eers, the American Academy <strong>of</strong> Arts<br />

& Sciences, and the American Association for the Advancement <strong>of</strong> Science. She has received the Comput<strong>in</strong>g<br />

Research Association’s Service Award, the Air Force Meritorious Civilian Service Award, the Department <strong>of</strong><br />

Defense Award for Dist<strong>in</strong>guished Public Service, and the IEEE Founders Award. The U.S. Navy named a seamount<br />

<strong>in</strong> the North Pacific Ocean for her. Among the advisory studies that she has chaired or participated <strong>in</strong>, one <strong>of</strong> her<br />

favorites resulted <strong>in</strong> the National Academies report that answered a question from U.S. Congress: “What icebreak<strong>in</strong>g<br />

ship capability does the nation need?”<br />

She is currently a member <strong>of</strong> the Board <strong>of</strong> Directors <strong>of</strong> Science Applications International Corporation and<br />

a trustee <strong>of</strong> In-Q-Tel and <strong>of</strong> Science Foundation Arizona. Duke University, Carnegie Mellon University, and the<br />

University <strong>of</strong> Southern California have awarded her Honorary Doctorate degrees. She is a founder and Council<br />

member <strong>of</strong> the Comput<strong>in</strong>g Community Consortium. She has published more than 50 technical articles and two<br />

books <strong>in</strong> the area <strong>of</strong> computer s<strong>of</strong>tware and systems, cyber-security, and science and technology policy. In 2010, the<br />

National Academy <strong>of</strong> Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g gave her the Arthur M. Bueche Award for contributions to science and technology<br />

policy advancement. Dr. Jones holds an A.B. from Rice University <strong>in</strong> mathematics, a Master <strong>of</strong> the Arts from the<br />

University <strong>of</strong> Texas, Aust<strong>in</strong>, <strong>in</strong> literature, and a Ph.D. <strong>in</strong> computer science from Carnegie Mellon University.<br />
