Through these roles, she has positively impacted the lives of K-16 girls in Seattle, exposing them to STEM fields and role models. IGNITE offers an affordable, community based, multifaceted approach to STEM education and outreach by providing toolkits and curriculum which allow educators across the globe to replicate the successful model that thrives in Seattle Public Schools. Cathi Rodgveller’s work at IGNITE brings together young women, educators and women professionals who work for local companies and agencies and live in nearby neighborhoods. Her outreach activities connect young women with strong women role models in industry, provide opportunities for learning and networking, and give an inside look at STEM careers. Over 18,000 girls have been positively impacted by the program, and the number of young women in technology courses has more than doubled following the implementation of the IGNITE program in Seattle high schools. The success of IGNITE’s practices has been recognized and disseminated on national and international levels. United States Senator Maria Cantwell has partnered with Cathi Rodgveller to initiate national legislation named after IGNITE that will provide $50 million in funding for girls’ technology education.The United States Department of State has identified IGNITE as a representative model for educators around the world attempting to increase female STEM representation, and Cathi Rodgveller regularly meets with international delegations as part of this effort. IGNITE’s curriculum is being translated into multiple foreign languages, and the organization is working directly with and impacting educators in Nigeria, Pakistan, South Africa, Libya, England and Egypt. She is the founder of the interdisciplinary field of Computer-Supported Cooperative Work (CSCW). For a quarter of a century, CSCW has been an effective approach to creating social and technological environments for group work, whether people are working face-to-face or at a distance. Trained as a Computer Scientist, Greif created an inclusive forum for technologists and social scientists to collaborate, articulated the impact user-driven design can have on system requirements, and reformulated database requirements for sharing based on user needs. She is also an influential advocate of strategic design, delivering design vision pieces to promote innovation in both novel user interfaces and interactive visualizations. Her work has brought legitimacy to the collaborative, interdisciplinary side of computer science. Through her career first in academia at the University of Washington and MIT and then in industry at Lotus, IBM, and IBM Research, Greif has worked on key technologies including email, group calendars, instant messaging, tagging, bookmarking, file-sharing, group activities, and communities, which are used by millions of professional women and men around the world today. These tools, all groundbreaking when introduced, promote collaboration and human interaction in the workplace. In 2008, she founded the Center for Social Business at IBM to understand business problems and develop social solutions. Greif serves as a role model and mentor to technical women and young girls. She has mentored thousands of women of all ages throughout her career. RICHARD NEWTON EDUCATOR AWARD WINNER SESSION: FRIDAY, 3:45 PM – 4:45 PM, BCC: 301-303 Susan Daniel DENICE DENTON EMERGING LEADER AWARD WINNER SPONSORED BY: AMRITA NEWTON, NERIS NEWTON, PETRA MICHEL, BILL UNGER Barbara Ericson is Director of Computer Science Outreach for Georgia Tech College of Computing. She is passionate about engaging girls in computing and recognizes that girls must be exposed to computing at an earlier age. She creates and disseminates outreach models that are sustainable and effective. She works on a state level as co-PI for NSF's Broadening Participation in Computing Alliance, "Georgia Computes!" and on a national level through the Advanced Placement Computer Science (AP CS) Development Committee and the NCWIT K-12 Alliance. Barbara Ericson has provided computer science professional development to hundreds of teachers in Georgia; 36% of high schools in Georgia have a teacher that has taken a workshop with her, and those schools produce 56% of all introductory computing students. The impact is visible: in the six years of “Georgia Computes!,” the number of women taking AP CS Level A in the state has increased 126%. She has played a significant role in institutionalizing computing education in Georgia, which features a high school curriculum based on the ACM/CSTA K-12 Model Curriculum, computer science endorsement for high school teachers, and AP CS counting toward high school graduation. She played a key role in each of these important areas by working with officials in the Department of Education and Professional Standards Commission and serving on policy committees. She has developed summer camp programs at Georgia Tech for predominantly female and under-represented minority students, and through “Georgia Computes!” she has offered workshops to others on her camp curricula and models and has held a seed grant competition to get new camps started. As a result, 11 new summer camp programs have been created around Georgia through her model. In 2011, over 50 weeks of computing summer camps were offered in Georgia, and 2012 featured over 700 spots for computing summer campers. SESSION: FRIDAY, 5:15 PM – 6:15 PM, BCC: 301-303 SPONSORED BY: MICROSOFT Susan Daniel is Assistant Professor in the School of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering at Cornell University. Her area of research is fluid dynamics and bioseparations. She has produced high profile work on mathematically oriented fluid mechanics in confined (microfluidic ) spaces, looking at drop mixing and motion on surfaces, and she has been published in Science, Proceedings of the National Academy of Science, and Langmuir. Her research group studies biological membranes and interfaces, focusing on two themes: the dynamic organization of membrane-bound biomolecules in lipid microdomains and the ensuing biological implications, and the interaction of viruses with cell membranes and the entry processes that lead to infection. This work has important implications in antiviral treatments and vaccine development. Susan Daniel has contributed greatly to diversity in the School of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering through her leadership of the Graduate Women’s Group. Recognizing the need for greater support for graduate women, she created a group that started with an internal focus on professional development for women graduate students and post-docs and grew rapidly to embrace outreach to local, poor, rural families to encourage girls to choose STEM fields for college. She has organized professional development presentations and talks by women working in industry and academia. She was instrumental in the creation of a fund to send younger graduate students to conferences. To expose young girls to STEM fields, she set up regular weekends where parents and their middle school daughters spent the day engaged in research with women graduate students and faculty. She also serves on the Graduate Field Committee that recruits women students, and her efforts have contributed an increase from 25% to 50% in women graduate student recruitment, as well as increased retention.
