Cathi Rodgveller is Founder and Coord<strong>in</strong>ator <strong>of</strong> IGNITE (Inspir<strong>in</strong>g Girls Now In Techonology Evolution) and<br />

Nontraditional Career Counselor at Seattle Public Schools. Through these roles, she has positively impacted<br />

the lives <strong>of</strong> K-16 girls <strong>in</strong> Seattle, expos<strong>in</strong>g them to STEM fields and role models. IGNITE <strong>of</strong>fers an affordable,<br />

community based, multifaceted approach to STEM education and outreach by provid<strong>in</strong>g toolkits and curriculum<br />

which allow educators across the globe to replicate the successful model that thrives <strong>in</strong> Seattle Public Schools.<br />

Cathi Rodgveller’s work at IGNITE br<strong>in</strong>gs together young women, educators and women pr<strong>of</strong>essionals who<br />

work for local companies and agencies and live <strong>in</strong> nearby neighborhoods. Her outreach activities connect young<br />

women with strong women role models <strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>dustry, provide opportunities for learn<strong>in</strong>g and network<strong>in</strong>g, and<br />

give an <strong>in</strong>side look at STEM careers. Over 18,000 girls have been positively impacted by the <strong>prog</strong>ram, and the<br />

number <strong>of</strong> young women <strong>in</strong> technology courses has more than doubled follow<strong>in</strong>g the implementation <strong>of</strong> the<br />

IGNITE <strong>prog</strong>ram <strong>in</strong> Seattle high schools.<br />

The success <strong>of</strong> IGNITE’s practices has been recognized and dissem<strong>in</strong>ated on national and <strong>in</strong>ternational levels.<br />

United States Senator Maria Cantwell has partnered with Cathi Rodgveller to <strong>in</strong>itiate national legislation named after<br />

IGNITE that will provide $50 million <strong>in</strong> fund<strong>in</strong>g for girls’ technology education.The United States Department <strong>of</strong> State<br />

has identified IGNITE as a representative model for educators around the world attempt<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>in</strong>crease female STEM<br />

representation, and Cathi Rodgveller regularly meets with <strong>in</strong>ternational delegations as part <strong>of</strong> this effort. IGNITE’s<br />

curriculum is be<strong>in</strong>g translated <strong>in</strong>to multiple foreign languages, and the organization is work<strong>in</strong>g directly with and<br />

impact<strong>in</strong>g educators <strong>in</strong> Nigeria, Pakistan, South Africa, Libya, England and Egypt.<br />

Irene Greif is IBM Fellow and Chief Scientist for Social Bus<strong>in</strong>ess at IBM Research. She is the founder <strong>of</strong> the <strong>in</strong>terdiscipl<strong>in</strong>ary<br />

field <strong>of</strong> Computer-Supported Cooperative Work (CSCW). For a quarter <strong>of</strong> a century, CSCW has been an<br />

effective approach to creat<strong>in</strong>g social and technological environments for group work, whether people are work<strong>in</strong>g<br />

face-to-face or at a distance. Tra<strong>in</strong>ed as a Computer Scientist, Greif created an <strong>in</strong>clusive forum for technologists and<br />

social scientists to collaborate, articulated the impact user-driven design can have on system requirements, and reformulated<br />

database requirements for shar<strong>in</strong>g based on user needs. She is also an <strong>in</strong>fluential advocate <strong>of</strong> strategic<br />

design, deliver<strong>in</strong>g design vision pieces to promote <strong>in</strong>novation <strong>in</strong> both novel user <strong>in</strong>terfaces and <strong>in</strong>teractive visualizations.<br />

Her work has brought legitimacy to the collaborative, <strong>in</strong>terdiscipl<strong>in</strong>ary side <strong>of</strong> computer science.<br />

Through her career first <strong>in</strong> academia at the University <strong>of</strong> Wash<strong>in</strong>gton and MIT and then <strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>dustry at Lotus, IBM,<br />

and IBM Research, Greif has worked on key technologies <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g email, group calendars, <strong>in</strong>stant messag<strong>in</strong>g,<br />

tagg<strong>in</strong>g, bookmark<strong>in</strong>g, file-shar<strong>in</strong>g, group activities, and communities, which are used by millions <strong>of</strong> pr<strong>of</strong>essional<br />

women and men around the world today. These tools, all groundbreak<strong>in</strong>g when <strong>in</strong>troduced, promote collaboration<br />

and human <strong>in</strong>teraction <strong>in</strong> the workplace. In 2008, she founded the Center for Social Bus<strong>in</strong>ess at IBM to understand<br />

bus<strong>in</strong>ess problems and develop social solutions.<br />

Greif serves as a role model and mentor to technical women and young girls. She has mentored thousands <strong>of</strong><br />

women <strong>of</strong> all ages throughout her career. She has been <strong>in</strong>volved with the Society <strong>of</strong> <strong>Women</strong> Eng<strong>in</strong>eers at MIT,<br />

<strong>Women</strong> Eng<strong>in</strong>eers <strong>in</strong> Science and Technology, the IBM EXITE camps for middle school girls, GirlGeeks “<strong>Women</strong> Who<br />

Inspire Us,” and IBM’s Watson <strong>Women</strong> Network.<br />
