<strong>Waller</strong> <strong>ISD</strong> announced <strong>the</strong> 2010-2011 <strong>Teachers</strong> & <strong>Rookies</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Year at <strong>the</strong> May 10 School<br />
Board Meeting. Pictured L-R is District Secondary Teacher <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Year, Lauren Crites, and<br />

<strong>Waller</strong> <strong>ISD</strong> Campus <strong>Teachers</strong> and <strong>Rookies</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Year were presented by Joy Kanyo, <strong>Waller</strong> <strong>ISD</strong><br />
Curriculum Director, and Maryann McDaniel, <strong>Waller</strong> <strong>ISD</strong> Ma<strong>the</strong>matics Coordinator, to <strong>the</strong> <strong>Waller</strong><br />
<strong>ISD</strong> Board <strong>of</strong> Trustees during <strong>the</strong> Regular Called Board Meeting on May 10. Selected by peers at<br />
<strong>the</strong>ir respective campuses, <strong>the</strong> Teacher <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Year honorees were: Mel Daigle (<strong>Waller</strong> High<br />
School), Tiffany Johnston (<strong>Waller</strong> Junior High), Lauren Crites (Schultz Junior High), Hea<strong>the</strong>r<br />
Burleson (Roberts Road Elementary), Kathy Eckermann (Fields Store Elementary), Linda Munger<br />
(Holleman Elementary), Jeannie Mosley (Jones Elementary) and Kellynn Geigley (Turlington<br />
Elementary). <strong>Waller</strong> <strong>ISD</strong> selected <strong>Rookies</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Year, for <strong>the</strong> second year in <strong>Waller</strong> <strong>ISD</strong>’s<br />
history. Rookie <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Years are first or second year teachers that were selected by <strong>the</strong>ir peers.<br />
<strong>Waller</strong> <strong>ISD</strong> <strong>Rookies</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Year are Charla Arendt (<strong>Waller</strong> High School), Brad Compton (<strong>Waller</strong><br />
Junior High), Traci Twardowski (Schultz Junior High), Arturo Flores (Roberts Road Elementary),<br />
Cortnie Zak (Fields Store Elementary), Jessica Derkowski (Holleman Elementary), Rosa<br />

When <strong>the</strong>se extraordinary teachers were selected as Teacher <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Year and Rookie <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Year<br />
at <strong>the</strong>ir respective <strong>Waller</strong> <strong>ISD</strong> campus, those from <strong>the</strong> elementary and secondary level were <strong>the</strong>n<br />
eligible to be selected as <strong>the</strong> District Elementary and Secondary <strong>Teachers</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Year and<br />
<strong>Rookies</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Year.<br />
After a detailed application and interview process, <strong>the</strong> District Elementary and Secondary<br />
<strong>Teachers</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Year and <strong>Rookies</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Year were selected. <strong>Waller</strong> <strong>ISD</strong> Secondary Teacher <strong>of</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong> Year is Lauren Crites (Schultz Junior High) and <strong>Waller</strong> <strong>ISD</strong> Elementary Teacher <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Year is<br />
Kathy Eckermann (Fields Store Elementary). <strong>Waller</strong> <strong>ISD</strong> Elementary Rookie <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Year is Paula<br />
Mueller (Turlington Elementary) and Secondary Rookie <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Year is Brad Compton (<strong>Waller</strong><br />
Junior High School). Lauren Crites and Kathy Eckermann proceed as district candidates<br />
representing <strong>Waller</strong> <strong>ISD</strong> in <strong>the</strong> Region IV Education Service Center Teacher <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Year<br />
competition. The Region IV Education Teacher <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Year winners will be announced in August.<br />
Last August, Michael Twigg, <strong>Waller</strong> Junior High Teacher, was selected as <strong>the</strong> 2009-2010 Region<br />
IV Secondary Teacher <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Year.<br />
A special thanks goes to <strong>the</strong> 2010-2011 <strong>Rookies</strong> and <strong>Teachers</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Year selection committees<br />
which include Kathryn Ann Reed, Prairie View A&M University and former <strong>Waller</strong> High School<br />
teacher; Delores Hargrave, Justice <strong>of</strong> Peace for Precinct 2; Dorothy Bottos, Democratic<br />
candidate for <strong>Waller</strong> County Judge; Brian Griffin <strong>of</strong> Lone Star College; City <strong>of</strong> <strong>Waller</strong> Mayor Paul<br />
Wood; Melanie Payne, 2010 <strong>Waller</strong> <strong>ISD</strong> Elementary Teacher <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Year and Fields Store<br />
Elementary Title I Math instructor; Jennifer H<strong>of</strong>fpauir, 2009 <strong>Waller</strong> <strong>ISD</strong> Elementary Teacher <strong>of</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong> Year and District Elementary Ma<strong>the</strong>matics Coordinator; Donna Suggitt, <strong>Waller</strong> <strong>ISD</strong> Testing<br />
Coordinator; Eric Geigley, 2010 <strong>Waller</strong> <strong>ISD</strong> Secondary Rookie <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Year; Michael Twigg, 2010<br />
District and Region IV Secondary Teacher <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Year; and Mike Brooks, <strong>Waller</strong> <strong>ISD</strong> Director <strong>of</strong><br />
Human Resources. All campus teachers <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> year received a shirt and plaque. In addition,<br />
each campus Teacher <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Year received a $500 financial award to be used for instructional<br />
purposes or staff development. District Elementary and Secondary <strong>Teachers</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Year<br />
received an additional $500 financial award to be used for instructional purposes or staff<br />
development. The two <strong>Waller</strong> <strong>ISD</strong> District <strong>Rookies</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Year received a $100 stipend to be used<br />
for pr<strong>of</strong>essional development.<br />
Congratulations to all <strong>the</strong> campus and district <strong>Teachers</strong> and <strong>Rookies</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Year for making a<br />
