The thillana is the joyful conclusion to a traditional Bharathanatyam
recital. A combination of nritta, or rhythmic dance, and abhinaya, or
expressional dance, this thillana, set to the raga Valachi, is in praise of
the Navagrahas or nine planets according to Hindu astrology. This
thillana is composed by bay area musician Smt. Jayashree Varadarajan
and is rendered by her student Janani Muralidharan. The orchestral
support has been provided by Sri N. Narayanan on the mridangam,
Smt. Shanthi Narayanan on the violin, and Sowmya Sridharan, a
student of Bharatha Kala Kutiram on the nattuvangam
The piece begins with an invocation to the goddess of power--
Shakti and delineates each of the weapons she wields as she rides
into battle on a tiger. She carries in many arms the mace, trident, the
sword, the bow and arrow. Shakti is the cosmic force, dynamic and
ferocious but radiant and gracious, maintaining the world equilibrium.
This invocation is followed by a symbolic offering of flowers-- a
pushpanjali, which demonstrates the exquisite movements and
rhythmic virtuosity of Bharatanatyam.
This is a varnam in praise of Lord Ganesha. The dancer describes
Ganesha as one who bestows boons and as one who is worshipped by
all gods. In this item lyric is interspersed with intricate swaras
allowing the dancer to showcase nritya and nritta aspects of dance.
Notable aspect of this choreography is that Nritta, the pure dance is
interwoven with poses, symbolizing the various aspects of Ganesha.
This is an experimental choreography as Varnam is not included in
Kuchipudi repertoire. The music is by Saraswati Vidhyarthi Assistant
Professor of Music, Andhra University.

This piece is in praise of Lord Hanuman and describes the extent of his
strength and power. Hanuman, who is an ardent devotee of
Rama, blesses his devotees with life of happiness and prosperity. He is
the one who can overcome any obstacle that comes along his way. Na
tural phenomena such as ocean, thunder, lightning, and wind obey his
commands. He is the creator, preserver and destroyer of life. By the
mere chant of his Lord Rama's name, he helps his devotees cross the
ocean of life and attain salvation.
Adbhutam
Kribakaran, and Sanya Bhavi Vohra
Composer: Lalgudi G. Jayaraman
Ragam: Ragamalika
Talam: Talamalika
The Sanskrit word "Adbhutam" is used to describe a feeling of awe and
wonder. The beauty of the classical Kalakshetra style of
Bharathanatyam compliments the intricate patterns that flow from
Lalgudi's violin in his original thillanas. The performers orient
themselves in interesting formations while dancing to the ragams
dvijavanthi, hamir kalyani, kanada, and kathana kuthuhalam.
Kanaka Dasa, an ardent devotee of Krishna, was denied entry to Udupi
Shri Krishna Temple because he was a Shepherd, a lower caste in
Hindu caste system. Saddened by this he sung to God asking to open
the doors of the temple and give him the privilege of seeing the idol. A
window formed on the west wall of the temple and idol turned to face
west which is now called Kanaka’s window.
Lord Shiva wished to show the rishis their limitations and appeared as
a handsome mendicant with Vishnu as his wife 'Mohini'. This created
chaos in 'Tharukavanam' as the wives of the rishis fell under the spell
of this charming, handsome mendicant while the youthful rishis fell for
the allure of Mohini. The older rishis became very angry and wanted to
destroy the pair. They raised a sacrificial fire ('Homam') from which
appeared a tiger which was directed at the pair. Lord Shiva killed the
tiger, peeled off its skin and tied it around his waist. Then the rishis
produced a poisonous serpent, which Lord Shiva caught and wore
around his neck. The rishis also sent a demon 'Muyalakan' against Lord
Shiva whom he crushed under his feet. Then the rishis sent the
sacrificial fire against him which he put on his left hand. The rishis
having lost the fire, sent the vedic 'mantras' which the Lord wore
around his ankles. At this the rishis conceded defeat and the Lord
revealed himself by dancing the 'Oorthava thandavam' with his matted
hair unfurling in all eight directions and the world reverberating to his
steps. This Oorthava Thandavam padam portrays the beautiful dance
of Shiva and Parvathi.
