Engineers (AIChE) – Minority<br />

Scholarship Awards<br />

The American <strong>Institute</strong> of Chemical Engineers<br />

awards $1,000 one-time scholarships<br />

to students studying, or intending to<br />

study, chemical engineering. Scholarships<br />

are awarded based on financial need and<br />

academic achievement. Applicants must<br />

be minority high school seniors or college<br />

students (freshmen to juniors) with a GPA<br />

of 3.0 or better. The selection of recipients<br />

will be based on the applicant’s academic<br />

record, participation in AIChE student and<br />

professional activities, career objectives,<br />

and financial need. Candidates who receive<br />

the scholarship are expected to join their<br />

college’s AIChE Student Chapter.<br />

In addition to this award, The Outstanding<br />

Scholastic Achievement Award — that consists<br />

of a certificate and honorarium — may<br />

be awarded to eligible applicants. No separate<br />

application form is required for that award.<br />

American Legacy Foundation Dr. Alma<br />

S. Adams Scholarship<br />

The Dr. Alma S. Adams Scholarship for<br />

Outreach and Health Communications<br />

to reduce tobacco use among what the<br />

American Legacy Foundation calls “Priority<br />

Populations.” Priority populations are those<br />

populations who are disproportionately<br />

targeted by the tobacco industry, or who often<br />

lack the tools and resources to combat<br />

smoking in their communities. Identified<br />

priority populations are Native Americans/<br />

Alsaka Natives, <strong>Hispanic</strong>s, African Americans,<br />

Asian/Pacific Islanders, Low SES, and<br />

Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender<br />

communities. The Adams scholarship will<br />

award a total of $5,000 annually for up to<br />

two candidates to pursue undergraduate or<br />

graduate studies at an accredited institution<br />

of higher education in the U.S. The<br />

scholarship, named for founding Legacy<br />

board member, Dr. Alma S. Adams, will be<br />

awarded to individuals who have demonstrated<br />

a commitment to community service<br />

or used the visual arts or media to convey<br />

culturally-appropriate health messages on<br />

behalf of a disadvantaged population. Entries<br />

may include creative writing, a musical<br />

composition or a sample from a visual arts<br />

medium.<br />
