Gates Millennium Scholars<br />

Funded by a grant from the Bill & Melinda<br />

Gates Foundation, Gates Millennium<br />

Scholars was established in 1999 to provide<br />

outstanding African American, American<br />

Indian/Alaska Native, Asian Pacific Islander<br />

American, and <strong>Hispanic</strong> American students<br />

with an opportunity to complete an undergraduate<br />

college education in all discipline<br />

areas and a graduate education for those<br />

students pursuing studies in mathematics,<br />

science, engineering, education, public health<br />

or library science. The goal of GMS is to<br />

promote academic excellence and to provide<br />

an opportunity for thousands of outstanding<br />

students with significant financial need to<br />

reach their fullest potential.<br />

The Gates Millennium Scholars program<br />

is available to graduating high school<br />

seniors. It provides substantial scholarship<br />

awards to exceptional high school seniors<br />

for study at the college of their choice.<br />

Eligible applicants must have a minimum<br />

grade point average (GPA) of 3.3 on a 4.0<br />

scale, demonstrated leadership skills, and<br />

significant financial need.<br />

The Geneseo Migrant Center<br />

Scholarship Opportunities<br />

The Geneseo Migrant Center has provided<br />

financial assistance to students across the<br />

country with a recent or ongoing history<br />

of movement to obtain work in agriculture<br />

since the inception of its first scholarship<br />

fund in 1974. Over the years, the number<br />

and size of the Center’s scholarship offerings<br />

have grown thanks to the generosity of<br />

many individuals.<br />

National Scholarships<br />

Berrien Fragos Thorn Arts Scholarship for<br />

Migrant Farmworkers<br />

Funded by a bequest from Berrien Fragos<br />

Thorn, creative arts scholarships have been<br />

initiated in order to foster and encourage the<br />

creative talents of individuals with a history<br />

of migration to obtain work in agriculture.<br />

Applicants must demonstrate an interest in<br />

pursuing further development of their talents<br />

in area of visual media, literary/creative<br />

writing, or craft area.<br />

Frank Kazmierczak Memorial Migrant<br />

Scholarship<br />

The purpose of this scholarship is to serve<br />

as a living tribute to Frank Kazmierczak, a<br />

long time migrant educator, by offering an<br />

annual award in the amount of $1,000 to a<br />

migrant student who wishes to pursue a<br />

career in teaching. Candidates must be a<br />

child of a migrant worker, aspire to become<br />

a teacher, maintain scholastic achievement,<br />

and demonstrate financial need.<br />

Gloria and Joseph Mattera National<br />

Scholarship Fund for Migrant Children<br />

The purpose of this scholarship is to<br />

financially assist migrant youth who have<br />

the potential and the desire to further their<br />

education to achieve their personal and<br />

career goals. Eligible applicants must be<br />

entering or enrolled in college or other types<br />

of postsecondary programs, high school<br />

dropouts, or potential dropouts.<br />

Migrant Farmworker Baccalaureate<br />

Scholarship<br />

This scholarship provides financial support to<br />

a deserving student with a history of migrating<br />

for employment in agriculture who has<br />

successfully completed one year of college.<br />

This support will cover expenses beyond<br />

what the youth is entitled to in federal/state<br />

and other scholarship assistance. This<br />

scholarship is designed to assist the youth<br />

in obtaining a baccalaureate degree without<br />

being encumbered with substantial debt.<br />
