2011 Annual 

General Meeting 

The National Annual General Meeting of the 

Society will be held on Tuesday 3rd May 

2011at the Central Showgrounds 

Bloemfontein. The time and venue will be 

confirmed in the Agenda. 

Items for the Agenda as well as nominations for 

General Council member, Secretary, Treasurer 

and Legal Advisor must reach the office no later 

than 24th March 2011. Members are reminded 

that annual subscriptions and levies are due by 

30th January 2011. In terms of clause 5.2 of the 

constitution members will be deemed to be in 

arrears if these are unpaid by the last day of 

February and any member who has not paid by 

this date will be regarded as suspended until 

such time as all outstanding accounts have been 

paid. Suspended members are not eligible to take 

part in shows, submit any administration, stand 

for any local or national office or vote at any 

meetings.

Overseas judge for 2011 Nationals 

Summer 2011 

Sue Cook presenting the sash for the Supreme 

Purebred Welsh on Show Championship at the 

Eastern Cape Regional Championships held in 

Cradock during December. The winner was 

Paddock Hill Sun Coquet owned by Adrienne 

van Blerk’s Paddock Hill Stud. Results appear 

on page 7. 

The judge for the Breed classes and certain ridden classes will be Mrs. Clare Willis-Burton of the 

Pentrefelin Stud, Abergavenny, Monmouth. Mrs Willis-Burton is on all four breed panels as well as 

the WPCS ridden panel and has judged extensively in U.K. and Europe. 

Pentrefelin Stud prides itself on producing and breeding animals with the correct conformation, 

type and quality to perform in all equine disciplines, be they in-hand, riding or driving competitions. 

The Stud has produced four Royal Welsh 1st prizewinners, winning the University College of 

Wales Novice Broodmare Trophy, for two consecutive years and still 

holds the World Record Price at auction for a Welsh Cob of £17,000 which was achived for the 

sale of their young mare Tardebigge Estelle, who was a daughter of the Stud’s senior stallion 

Pentrefelin Taliesin. They were awarded the Brightwells champage moment for this sale.

Notices 

National Championships 

The National Championships prize-list and 

entry form is included with this Newsletter. 

Please ensure that you complete your stabling 

requirements on the attached form. The fee for 

stables is R20 per stables for the duration of 

the Welsh classes (i.e. Tuesday until Friday 

morning). Please also note the increase in gate 

entry fees laid down by the show society, especially 

with regard to the grooms’ entry tickets. 

Judge’s exams 

Any person wishing to write the theory exams 

for breed, riding and harness classes is urged to 

contact their regional Administrator who will 

arrange a time and place for candidates to write 

the exams with an allocated candidate number 

to preserve the candidate’s anonymity during 

the assessment process. Papers will be returned 

to the Secretary for marking by one of the 

panel of examiners (current panel members are 

Sue Cook, Di Nicholson & Sydney Kidson) 

and successful candidates will be placed on a 

learner panel. Only after they have completed 

at least one practical assignment with an examining 

judge will they be promoted to Junior 

level. Subsequent promotion will depend on 

successful completion of further practical 

assignments. No person under the age of 21 

will be qualified as a judge although they may 

write the theory paper and act as a learner 

OBITUARY 

Angela Van Zyl 

It is with great sadness that we report the 

death of Angela Van Zyl in October this year. 

Angela had been a member of the Society 

for almost 30 years and bred the well-known 

Tashena ponies. In later years she became a 

National judge and officiated at the National 

Championships in 2009. We offer our condolences 

to her family and friends.

Judges’ seminar 

There will be compulsory Judges seminars held 

in the Cape and Northern Region in the first 

quarter of 2011. The seminar will focus on a 

viewing of the DVD issued by WPCS (UK) on 

Judging Welsh Ponies and Cobs with emphasis 

on breed type, conformation and movement as 

well as correct way of going in ridden classes. 

This will be followed by discussions on specific 

issues related to judging ponies in South 

Africa. All judges will be contacted with further 

details in the near future. 

COD invoicing 

According to our by-laws all work should be 

submitted with the requisite administration fees 

(see list of new fees in this Newsletter). If this 

is not done and you do not have a current credit 

balance in your account you will be issued 

with a pro-forma invoice for the relevant 

administration and the work will be pended 

until payment is received. 

Learner judges 

Congratulations to our three new learner 

judges. They are: Rene Le Roux, Elizabeth 

Ferguson and Lisa Donaldson. We hope they 

will enjoy their new roles and continue on up 

the judging ladder.

RULE CHANGES 

Changes to show rules 

Barren Mares – classes for Barren Mares 

(over the age of 8 years) in all sections 

(including Partbreds) will be offered at 

National and Regional Championships. First 

& second prize winners in these classes will 

be eligible for the relevant section Supreme 

Championship. 

Change of Handlers – in Breed classes, with 

the permission of the judge, alternate runners 

will be allowed to enable an exhibitor to run 

out more than one pony. 

Driving 

Agreed at Council meeting 13 November 

2010 

As a safety measure all drivers must carry a 

whip on the carriage; the length of the whip 

is measured to the end of the tassel. 

In driver under 12 classes all reins must be 

fitted with loops. 

The length of hoof (including the shoe) for 

ponies and Cobs over 13.2h(1,37m)will be 

increased to 100mm in line with the AGM 

decision to increase the hoof length for 

ponies 1,32m and under to 95mm.

KwaZulu Natal 

Welsh Pony Show 

On 12 and 13 December 2010 the KZN Welsh 

Pony Show was held at the Karkloof Polo Club 

by kind permission of Mr and Mrs Mike 

Benson. 

The spacious Karkloof valley is a wonderful 

setting for equestrian activities. The surrounding 

Berg foothills are densely covered with 

indigenous forest, the air is clean and soft 

green pastures surround dams filled by clear 

mountain streams. Many visitors remarked on 

how lucky we were to be holding our show in 

such beautiful surroundings. So a very big 

thank you to the Benson Family. 

Show Director Rhian Capostagno and her hardworking 

team ran a very well organised event 

alongside the PMB Pony Show which was celebrating 

its 50th anniversary. Show Director 

Jackie Smith and her committee very kindly 

allowed the Welsh ponies to share the venue. 

KZNHS Showing Chairman Jackie Pappas 

gave up two days of her time to judge and did 

a great job throughout. It was a pleasure to 

watch someone so knowledgeable in action. 

Every competitor learnt something from her 

too which is exactly the idea at WPCS shows. 

Thank you Jackie. 

The fine group of beautiful Welsh Purebred 

and Partbred ponies graced their surroundings 

and attracted a crowd of spectators. Digby, 

Lindi and Lisa Donaldson with their Purebred 

ponies made the long journey down from 

Gauteng. Their super ponies, turnout and 

ringcraft really lifted the game and set a great 

example to the less experienced competitors. 

Likewise it was wonderful to have Grant 

Langley’s large contingent of high quality 

Partbred Foresyte ponies come up all the way 

from Shongweni. These well trained riders 

competing in the same classes as the complete 

novices meant that they had some polished 

examples to try to emulate in the future. It was 

so encouraging to see the beginners improving 

with every class.

The Dimmock Dragonfly Floating Trophy, 

kindly donated and presented by Mrs 

Delia Gardner, was awarded to Foresyte 

Party Trick ridden by Courtney Webber, 

Sunday morning saw the In Hand classes with 

the Best in Show being awarded the Dimmock 

Dragonfly Trophy. The worthy winner was the 

well known KZN Team Pony Foresyte Party 

Trick,owned and shown by Courtney Webber 

with the Purebred Sec A Llandilo Halwyn 

owned by the Donaldson family and shown by 

Digby Donaldson an eye-catching Reserve. 

Following on were the Lead Rein and First 

Ridden classes and here it was obvious how 

suitable the Welsh pony is for younger children. 

Each group had a ridden and working 

class with a challenging test. The eventual 

Champion was a just turned four year old pony 

and her rider on their first outing off the farm, 

Karg Mayfly ridden by Cameron Karg closely 

followed by the Lead Rein winner Penmynnd 

Penny Lane ridden by Pippa Erskine. 

Monday morning saw well filled ridden classes 

which in the Welsh Society are open to riders 

of all ages as the Welsh and Partbred Welsh 

ponies and horses are meant for the whole family 

to enjoy. It was great to see some famous 

ponies of the past such as Caegwyn Sara Rose 

ridden by Thomas Erskine and Ashgar Penny 

ridden by Willow Benson looking and going so 

well in their senior years. There were also

best in show concluded a fun-filled and entertaining 

two days of showing. The youngest 

competitor was seven year old Eli Capostagno 

who certainly has a bright future ahead of her 

as she held her own in every class improving 

on her well behaved and willing five year old 

Purebred pony Tipuana Pixie. 

The Dimmock Dulcimer Trophy for the Best in 

Show Ridden Pony/horse went once again to 

Foresyte Party Trick ridden by Courtney 

Webber with a worthy Reserve Champion 

being the stallion Llandilo Halwyn owned by 

Tipuana Stud and ridden by Lisa Donaldson.

ponies are planned such as show training days, 

a group outing to watch the Welsh classes at 

Horse of the Year Show 15th to 20th February 

2011, a group outing to watch the classes at the 

Welsh National Championships at 

Bloemfontein (4th & 5th May) visits to stud 

farms, and shows which will include classes 

for Welsh ponies who may never have been 

recorded or registered but are known to have 

Welsh blood.

points and is Show Jumping at 90cm. Amongst his achievements he was Reserve 

Champion Pony on Show at the October Showing Show in 2010 and Champion Pony on 

Show at the Horse and Hound Show in 2010. He has represented the Gauteng A Team 

for the last 2 years in the SANEF Inter Schools league and won the Show Hunter at the
