Horsesickness restrictions announced
1ST APRIL 2009. In a press release today, the Minister of Agriculture in the Western Cape,
Cobus Dowry, announced restrictions on horse movements into the Western Cape due to
outbreaks of African Horse Sickness throughout the rest of South Africa.
The Chief Directorate of Veterinary Services in the Western Cape has announced that a restriction
will be placed on all horse movements to the Western Cape African Horse Sickness control
area from all other provinces, with immediate effect.
These restrictions have been instituted due to the increasing number of reported and suspicious
cases of AHS in the rest of South Africa. Horse owners are thus strongly discouraged
from attempting to move horses from anywhere in the infected zone into the Western Cape
control area as the risk of transmitting the disease is increasing daily. An outbreak in the AHS
control area can potentially result in the death of many horses as well as place our export status
in jeopardy, possibly leading to a 2 year ban by the EU and causing major financial and
physical losses to the equine industry as a whole.
This means that all horses from the Western Cape protocol area intending to return from
Bloemfontein would have to spend three weeks in quarantine in Beaufort West at about R60
per day, and after the period would have to be collected as a separate trip, adding some R4000
to the trip from up north. This will affect ponies coming to Nationals from that area which
covers an arc from Morreesburg to Swellendam.
Welcome to our overseas judge for Nationals
Mr Cemaes Evans of Cathedine Stud has
accepted an invitation to judge at the 2009
National Show in Bloemfontein. The following
history of the Stud is taken from The Welsh
Cob by Dr. Wynne Davies (J.A. Allen 1998).
Cathedine Stud
Cathedine Stud was started in 1941 when Mr
Tom Evans bought the chestnut Cob filly
Victory Maid for £8. In 1949 he bred Princess
out of Victory Maid and she went on to win
both the George Prince of Wales Cup and the
ridden Welsh Cob class at the Aberystwyth
Royal Welsh Show in 1957, the only mare ever
to have won both. The Cathedine Prefix which
had been registered by 1954 was adopted
from the farm in Bwlch Brecon where the
family have lived for almost 100 years. The
Cathedine Stud has had a great influence on
many studs throughout Britain, including the
Ebbw Stud where Cathedine Pride II was the
dam of a string of champions including the
famous Ebbw Victor. (Information from The

Council Matters
Transparency and democracy has become the
order of the day in all spheres and it is Council’s
desire to involve all the members in as many
ways as possible. It was decided at the last
Council Meeting to make all correspondence
open to all so that the members are fully aware
of what is happening within the society.

WPCS bedank vir die voorreg en geleenthede
wat ek gehad om op die Raad te dien. Glo my
dit was nie ‘n maklike besluit om iets op te gee
wat naby my hart le nie, al die laagtepunte en
hoogtepunte waardeur ons deur die jare gestoei
het nie.
Soms moet ‘n persoon ‘n besluit neem wat jou
lewe net rustiger maak, geleenthede wat opduik
wat jy met albei hande moet aangryp, aandag
gee aan jou gesin en net jou ponies weer kan
geniet. PAJAYHU WALLIESE PONIES gaan voort
in al sy glorie en ek wil net graag weer my
skoue begin geniet.
Ek het alreeds my Komiteelede ingelig oor my
besluit en dit sal my laaste vergadering wees as

Twee keer SA Groot Kampioen enkeltuig met die SA Kampioenskappe in Bloemfontein. Hy is in die
fleur van sy lewe van ons af weggeneem. Baie mense het vir Mighty soos almal hom geken het
geken.
Iemand het daardie aand na sy dood vir my gesê Mighty was net ‘n
legende. Hy was die hings met die mooiste temperament . ‘n Kind van 8jaar kon met hom werk tot ‘
n volwassene. Waaroor ek baie spyt is is dat hy nooit gebruik is nie. Net 2 lewende vullens van hom
leef. Staten Bismark nou ‘n reun en uitstaande ry perd, en my eie perd Cracker Jack. Cracker Jack is
nog jonk maar ons glo dat hy in sy pa se voetspore sal volg.
Mighty is aan ‘n baie seldsame siekte dood Akute Emperokolitus. Dit
was ‘n ontsettende skok vir ons as Botha familie.
Ons wil net aan al ons perde vriende vir die telefoon oproepe en
S.M.S.e wat ons ontvang het baie dankie sê ons waardeer dit baie. Al wat nou oorbly is mooi foto’s
,rosette,medaljes en ‘n groot gemis want ons Groot Kanon is nie meer daar nie.

not be possible for me to go on being the secretary,
regional administrator and Council member.
I had to make a decision to pull in some
things just to keep afloat and recent incidents
just made it easier to decide. I will not be
available for the Regional committee anymore.
We will vote for a new committee on the 2nd
of October when we have our AGM at
Robertson.
I want to thank Council and yourself for all you
did and still do to keep the Society running.

Hello Sue,
Thank you for the summation of the advantages
and disadvantages of the National
Champs in Cradock.
Just to clarify some of the list of disadvantages :

1.The Cradock venue would be available for at
least the next 10 years if required.
2.Other regions are welcome to “tender” for the

privilege of running the National Show if they
have the equivalent facilities.
3. While our show society is not in a position to
pay a R5000 levy, Cradock would most assuredly
not make any charge to the Society for the
use of the Showgrounds and all the accompanying
facilities.
4. At the recent Regional Champs both sets of
stands were packed with spectators, particularly
on the Friday and the Saturday. This could well
be because there is very little alternative entertainment
for the people of Cradock. Local interest
was such that parking on the showground
had to be reserved for officials and competitors
only. The street outside the showgrounds was
parked solid on both sides of the road for some
distance.
Incidently, the Welsh team of 8 was universally
accepted as the highlight of the show.
5. There was, in fact, a small funfair available to
the children.
Queries :
Entries at Nationals have averaged 180 ponies
over the last 5 years.
The Cradock showgrounds has 230 stables of at
least equal quality to those at Bloem.
There are 2 camping sites including reasonable
ablution facilities on the showgrounds and

competitors would be welcome to camp in any
of the spare stables.
There are 2 good PA systems available for the 2
showrings and a PA system for the collecting
ring steward.
At all Cradock shows there is adequate clean
fresh bedding for each stable. Dirty bedding will
be removed daily at no charge to the Society.
All the ablution blocks and toilet facilities are
totally closed in between shows. The show society
re-opens, checks and cleans these before
the shows at no cost to the Welsh Pony Society.
What limited security is required at the showgrounds
is provided for by the Cradock show
society.
In one of the stands, alongside the main arena,
a local church group runs the kitchen providing
cooldrinks and basic foodstuffs throughout the
show (quality good). There is also a full-time
bar at the other end of the stand. Within 1km
of the showgrounds there is both a Steers and a
Kentucky Fried Chicken. Other restaurants are
also within easy reach of the showgrounds.
Regarding the dates on which the show will be
staged, we are merely offering an alternative
venue at whatever date Council decides is best.
We trust that he organization of this event will
be handled by the designated Council member
and that our role would purely be one of support.
If you have any further queries, please do not

be assured of our fullest support for the
Nationals watever Council decides.

Regional Council members):
Hi Sue
There is to be no debate at the AGM. At the last
AGM the principles were established and I expect
that by the next AGM the new system will have
been implemented and the new councillors elected.
What problems do you have with the wording
as it is quite clear and in line with the proposal
which was passed unanimously at the AGM. So
what are your concerns which you refer to?

You certainly did not mention any concerns
when the resolution was passed.
It looks as if those in Council are hell bent on
delaying this election to stay in power for as
long as possible (Mugabe syndrome?) and
members are fed-up with this current council
and wish for their council to be democratically
elected.
Could you please send me the draft minutes of
the AGM so that I can ensure that you have
correctly recorded the resolution taken.

The synopsis is presumably of qualification/experience
rather than personal details.
9.2.12 I presume new nominations forms will
only be sent to the Regions that lack the requisite
number of members? What happens if no
nominations have been received from a Region
in the required time?
I have a couple of concerns about the proposal
but those are for debate at the AGM.
I will send your proposal to Council with the
Agenda for discussion at our meeting.

The Ten Showing
Commandments
These are reproduced at the specific
request of TWO international judges
who have judged Welsh ponies in South
Africa!
1. Thou shalt not overtake another
competitor on the inside when passing
the judge.
2. Thou shalt not steal another’s place in
the line up under the pretext “I thought
it was me they were calling in”.
3. Thou shalt not allow thy groom into
the ring in scruffy clothes and not
wearing a hat.
4. Thou shalt not allow thy groom to
bring the contents of the lorry into the
ring.
5. Thou shalt not be unpleasant or rude to
a steward, thy groom or thy mother
who has been up since 4am plaiting
and driving.
6. Thou shalt ignore persons outside the
ring offering verbal assistance whilst
you are in the ring.
7. Thou shalt never leave the ring without
first seeking the judge’s permission.
8. Thou shalt at all times be polite and
pleasant to the judge, even if thou
thinkest “blind old bat” or “silly old
trout”.
9. Thou shalt smile and say “thank you”
when handed your rosette, even if
thou disagree with the result
10. Thou shall turn up for Championships,
parades and prizegivings if required,
even if it is a long way home or thou
want to change.

Poop predicament has horse
owners raising a stink
The poop hit the fan when the last manure
mulcher in Los Angeles closed shop. The price of
poop disposal is breaking the budgets of Los
Angeles horse owners, as stable owners pass
along the expense of taking horse droppings to
landfills.
"The cost to get rid of this stuff has just skyrocketed,"
says Royan Herman, who runs the Peacock
Hill and J-Bar Ranch stables in the San Fernando
Valley with her husband, Mark.
Los Angeles is home to about 10 000 horses, says
city councillor Wendy Greuel, although some
estimates of the horse population run as high as
20 000 within city limits and 45 000 in all of Los
Angeles County.
The waste produced by horses living in a big city
was not a problem for decades, as nurseries and
compost yards accepted manure and turned it
into fertiliser. But when zoning officials allowed
developers to build homes close to those sites,
new residents complained of the stench and
nurseries began turning away the dung.
Depositing manure at a landfill costs up to $47
(R362) a ton, five times what the mulchers
charge, says Mark Herman. Stable owners can't
afford to stay in business unless they pass that
expense to boarders, he says. The 120 horses at
his stables produced as much as 4.5 tons of
manure a day.
Horses generate an estimated $900 million in
ancillary revenues a year, according to local resident
Fritz Bronner, sustaining riding teachers, veterinarians,
blacksmiths, and feed and tack stores.
And poop could add even more cash to city coffers.
Councilman Richard Alarcon started a pilot
programme to recycle some of the manure
into compost. "We are looking at every option
available to us, including the generation of electricity,"
Greuel says.
Bronner says he's worried that the poop-disposal
crisis and lack of political clout may spell an end
to the intangible benefits of sharing Los Angeles
with horses. "The clip-clop on the streets is soothing,"
Bronner says. "Horses just slow everything
down a bit. Traffic slows down, you slow down."

Family Cob

It’s an arduous job being a family cob
Calling for brains and ability.
We must cater for all from the short and the tall
(in varying states of stability).
When I take Mrs. hunting I stay at the back
What Mrs calls hunting, I’d call a hack.
She’s frightened of jumping, so I must wait
(ashamed as I feel going through a gate).
When I take Mr. hunting I’m happy to know
That if there’s a jump, he’ll have a go.
His style, I admit, is far from the best
But I’m glad- oh so glad- to be up with the rest.
When summer time comes, it’s a bit of a pain.
It’s pony club rallies, with our little Jane.
I plod round in circles taking great care.
Unless I trot smoothly, she could disappear!
Jim rides after school, he thinks I’m Red Rum,
(or he’s driving a sports car in formula one)
A little success has gone to his head,
So I dump Master Jim in a thick nettle bed!
It’s an arduous job being a family cob,
Calling for brains and ability.
I have to teach all from the nervous and small,
To those who should learn some humility.

Remember MacGyver?
31 March 2009 was the 20th birthday of dear little
'Ben Hur MacGyver' a 'Hydown' pony that some of
you may only of heard of at the Performance
Awards.
He has been with us for the last 8 years during
which time he did many lead-rein classes at Welsh
and other shows. His best event was and still is
Working Riding'. He won this event at the
'Children's Festival' some time ago in the 10 and
under age group [off lead rein]. In addition he won
this event at the 'old' Gauteng Schools League
Finals out of a class of 60+ entries. He is also
good at dressage having won the Eastern Region
of GHS 10 and under Championship as well as
Pony Club Champs. His latest achievement was to
be part of the Benoni PC team that came 1st at
the recent Inter-Branch mounted games and to
beat about 20 others in the 'Jumpkhana' eventthis
being a mix of Mounted games and jumps. In
addition he is extremely popular and useful for
Pony Club instruction purposes. Due to his section
B size lots of our members can easily practice
such things as 'Bandaging and Rugging',
'Grooming,' 'Points of the horse' etc.
He is very nippy at ducking under our fences and

flag in Europe
Here is an update on one of the ponies bred by
Grant Langley in South Africa that is now living
and competing in Switzerland and doing very
well.

Here is some news and results of Steffi and
Penny. You called her Foresyte Little Villa, but
we named her "Penny" after she left me "penniless"
as a student! I had to pay Carla off
because I had so little money those days!
She won first time out in dressage with a score
of 75% in novice, 64% in Elementary (2nd),
then went on to win the open riding class and
the partbred in-hand class at an international
Welsh Show with an English judge, Anna
Stevens. She also got an special trophy for the
best partnership between pony and handler.
She since has had another Elementary Show
with a first and third in her classes.
She also took Steffi through a licencing test last
weekend (people have to do an oral and riding
test here before they are permitted to ride in
higher classes, ie from EM level onwards), the
judge approached her after the test and said
she wanted all the results from SA so that they
can put her up for National selection next year.
Which means we may be competing internationally
from the end of next year onwards.
I must say, after all the hassles of the import,
we have never regretted it and I am SO GLAD I
bought her when Carla suggested it. She has
NEVER been mean, although certainly no slug
either, she has just the right amount of pep and
fire to get her the awards without being out of
control. Thank you for breeding such a wonderful

SPRING
CLASSIC
Southern Riding Centre was very kind to
allow us to hold the RoseApple Spring
Classic at their premises this year. This
being particularly so as they are undergoing
huge renovations to upgrade the property.
Grandstands ready for erection were
in evidence as well other building material.
Competitors were very understanding once
they knew what was happening and there
is great enthusiasm for a show next year
at what will be a super venue.
