LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT 

To all Society members 

We still have fresh in our memory a highly successful National 

Championships in Bloemfontein. The “Thank-you”s were made 

during the prize-giving supper, all the trophies were presented 

and everyone left Bloemfontein with (hopefully) a song in their 

heart and full of enthusiasm for Welsh Ponies and Cobs. 

It is now time to look back on the show and ask a few questions. 

It is to no-one’s advantage if we all say it was a nice show and 

don’t look in depth at how we can make next year’s show an 

even greater success.

My first question: Are we really attracting the top breeders to 

show their ponies. Times have changed but I remember that in 1984 there were 15 - 20 foals in the foal 

class. After this the class was split to make provision for judging filly and colt foals separately. This 

year there were 9 foals at the show. I should like to know from the breeders who did not attend the 

show what the reasons are that they don’t show. If we have these answers then we can see what we can 

do about it. What was heartening was the number and high quality of the Cobs entered at the show. A 

dark cloud here was the fact that the Senior Cob stallions had only one or two in the class. Where are 

all the good stallions? 

My second question concerns the Annual General Meeting. We had the most members present at this 

year’s meeting that we’ve had for many years. There were 38 members present and 27 members were 

represented through giving their proxies to members to speak on their behalf during the meeting. Why 

do members not attend the Annual General meeting? Is it the wrong time of the year; is it the wrong 

time of the day; is the agenda dull and monotonous and offers no challenge to members or, even more 

frightening, have the members lost trust in the Society and the Council? We would like answers to 

these questions. Once we know why members don’t attend the AGM then we can give attention to 

these issues. 

Members were requested to offer suggestions for an alternative venue for the Nationals Championships. 

Since the Council has received no official proposals the conclusion is that Bloemfontein is the right 

place to hold the National Show. Next year the show will take place from 27th to 28th April. Council 

will try to negotiate with Bloemskou to allow us to hold the Breed classes on Tuesday afternoon. We 

will keep members informed about these arrangements. All we ask of you is that you note these dates 

and make sure that you, your family (and your ponies) are part of this occasion.

Ponie lede 

Ons het nog vars in ons herrineringe ‘n baie suksesvolle 

Nasionale Kampioenskappe te 

Bloemfontein. Die dankies is gesê tydens die 

prysuitdelings dinee en al die trofees is 

uitgedeel en almal is uit Bloemfontein uit weg 

met (hopelik) ‘n lied in hulle hart en vol entoesiasme 

vir die Walliese Ponies. 

Dit is egter nou tyd om ‘n terugblik te neem op 

die skou en ‘n paar vrae te vra. Dit is tot niemand 

se voordeel as ons almal sê dit was ‘n 

lekker skou en daar word nie in diepte gekyk om 

volgende jaar se skou ‘n nog groter sukses te 

maak nie. 

My eerste vraag: Kry ons regtig die top telers 

om hulle ponies te kom vertoon. Tye het verander, 

maar ek onthou in 1984 toe daar 15 – 20 

vullens in die vulklas was. Net hierna is die klas 

gedeel om voorsiening te maak vir merrie- en 

hingvullens apart. Vanjaar was daar 9 vullens op 

die skou. Ek sal graag van telers wat nie die 

skou bygewoon het wil weet wat die rede is dat 

hulle nie die skou bygewoon het nie. As ons 

hierdie antwoorde het kan ons kyk wat ons 

daaraan kan doen. Wat verblydens was is die

On behalf of Council and the members 

of the WPCS we offer our sincere 

condolences to Sue Cook on the death 

of her father on June 9th.

aantal Cobs wat aan die skou deelgeneem het en 

die kwaliteit van hierdie perde. Wat ‘n donker 

wolkie hier was is die feit dat die Senior Cob 

Hingste net een of twee in die klas was. Waar is 

al die goeie hingste? 

My tweede vraag is rakende die Algemene 

Jaarvergadering. Dit is die meeste lede wat ons 

nog teenwoordig gehad het tydens die 

Jaarvergadering in baie jare. Daar was 38 lede 

teenwoordig en 27 lede was teenwoordig deur 

hulle proksies aan lede te gee om namens hulle, 

hul wens uit te spreek tydens die vergadering. 

Hoekom woon lede nie die Jaarvergadering by 

nie? Is dit die verkeerde tyd van die jaar, is dit 

die verkeerde tyd van die dag, is die agenda saai 

en eentonig en bied geen uitdaging aan lede nie 

of nog meer skrikwekkend, het die lede vertroue 

verloor in die genootskap en die Raad. Ons sal 

graag hierdie vrae beantwoord wil hê. As ons 

weet hoekom lede nie die Jaarvergadering 

bywoon nie, kan daar aandag gegee word 

daaraan. 

Daar is ‘n versoek aan lede gerig om voorstelle 

in te dien vir ‘n alternatiewe terrein vir die aanbied 

van die Nasionale Kampioenskappe. Daar 

was geen amptelike voorstelle aan die Raad 

deurgegee en die gevolgtrekking is dat 

Bloemfontein die regte plek is vir die Nasionale 

skou. Volgende jaar vind die skou plaas vanaf 

27 tot 28 April. Die Raad gaan poog om met 

Bloemskou te onderhandel sodat die teelklasse 

die Dinsdag middag afgehandel kan word. Ons 

sal u as lid ophoogte hou van hierdie reelings. Al 

wat ons van u vrae is om hierdie datums te merk 

en seker te maak jy en jou gesin (en jou ponies) 

is deel van hierdie geleentheid.

Council Matters 

CHANGE TO BREED STANDARD 

Attention of members is drawn to the change 

in the Breed Standard for Section A ponies 

approved at AGM 2009: 

Action: Quick, free and straight from the 

shoulder, well away in front. Knees and hocks 

well flexed with straight and powerful leverage 

with hocks well under the body. 

“OFF LEADREIN” CLASSES 

We have been using this term in Gauteng for 

some time now to describe what were previously 

known as “Beginners’ First Pony” classes. 

We changed the name because we felt it 

was more descriptive of the aim of the class. 

Discussing this with Philip Cooper at Autumn 

Gold Cup, he asked why we didn’t use the title 

“First Year First Ridden” classes as they do in 

U.K. This probably describes the aim of the 

class far better than either of the other names. 

It is intended as a bridging class between leadrein 

and First Pony where some of the riders 

have become very competent before they move 

out of this age category. In the “First Year” 

classes riders are not expected to canter in any 

stage of their class but they can still gain confidence, 

competing alone without a reassuring 

hand on the leadrein. It also provides a definite 

time frame which will ensure that riders move 

on to the next level after a year, or sooner if 

they feel confident enough to do so. Please parents, 

teachers and judges let us know your 

views on this idea. 

JUDGES PROTOCOL 

(adapted from WPCS showing handbook) 

1. Exhibitors must not show under a judge who 

has or has had a financial interest or has had a 

financial interest in that particular animal, stud 

fees excluded. (the exhibitor is the owner, lessee 

or person producing/showing the animal). 

2. A judge may not adjudicate an animal

which, to the Judge’s knowledge, was sold, 

leased or produced by the Judge or his immediate 

family or employer. 

3. A rider, whip or handler must not compete in 

a class judged by a person for whom he/she 

has ridden, driven or produced or shown in 

hand during the previous twelve months. 

4. An exhibitor must not enter a class under a 

Judge who has produced an animal for that 

exhibitor within the previous 12 months.

DNA Profiling tariffs 

2009/2010 

The Animal Genetics Division, ARC-API has 

agreed that from 1st April 2009 all DNA samples 

sent from the Welsh Pony & Cob Society 

(accompanied by payment) will be charged at 

R185 including VAT per sample. 

To take advantage of this reduced rate, hair 

samples (with roots) should be sent in a sealed 

envelope to WPCS, P.O. Box 1029, Halfway 

House 1685. The front of the envelope should 

give the following details: 

Name of Pony, Name of Sire &Dam (with 

DNA nos. where available), Owner’s name and 

address. Samples must be accompanied by 

payment or proof of deposit of R185 per sample. 

Cheques should be made out to WPCS. 

Samples sent without payment will be returned 

to the sender or destroyed. 

Confirmation of profile numbers will be routed 

to the Owner via WPCS. 

N.B. This offer only applies to samples sent via 

WPCS. Samples sent direct to Irene will be 

charged at the normal rate (see below).

The Start of Spring 

The sun comes sneaking out from 

behind the hill 

The trees yawn and shake the frost 

off their leaves 

The small flower buds open up and giggle 

with happiness 

Out come th small animals with little grins 

as they see the smiling sun 

The small blades of grass start to creep 

out of the soil 

The bright blue sky bursts out 

from behind the clouds 

The cold wind fades into a warm breeze 

The new green leaves dance on the branches 

of the trees 

The buzzing bees skip along 

Sucking the nectar from the flowers 

The bright colours are beautiful 

The Stallion 

He gallops through the field 

His mane dancing in the wind 

As he rests near a lake 

His shimmering coat glistens in the sunlight 

Gulping sounds can be heard as he drinks 

the water 

As the sun starts to set and it fades to night 

The stallion gallops towards the horizon 

Leaving silence 

And the only sound that can be heard 

Is the sound of hooves pounding the ground.
