MEET THE JUDGE 

Judith Reed 

We asked our overseas judge for 2008 Nationals 

to tell us a bit about herself - and have received 

the following letter: 

I was born into a hunting/racing family,I started 

riding at the age of 5 on a welsh mountain type 

pony My interest in showing and breeding 

welsh mountain ponies began by traveling to 

shows with my neighbour Mr Breian Llewellyn 

of the Wiston Stud.I had several good show 

jumping ponies that used to travel on the front 

of the lorry and used to compete after we had 

shown the mountain ponies in the morning.In 

1978 my Father bought me 2 sec A’s Friars 

Spring Maid and Fieldcote Granny’s 

Bonnet,Spring Maid still being with us today at 

the age of 32.They were followed by Friars 

FairyTale in 1981also still here at 28 yrs and the 

majority of the ponies here at the stud are 

from these three family lines. 

Over the years we have had much success 

showing our ponies with some of the highlights

Now that the alterations to the Constitution have been approved by the 

Registrar, members will have the opportunity to nominate, by post, a 

General Council member to serve on Council for the coming year. Any 

paid-up member may be nominated on the form that will be circulated 

with this Newsletter. Nominations must be signed by the candidate and 

proposed and seconded by two paid-up members. Voting will take place 

at the AGM and nominated candidates must be present at the AGM. If 

you send in a nomination by fax, post or email please confirm with the 

Secretary before the AGM that the nomination has been received on or 

before 7 April 2008.

Haverford Misty Maid,Champion 3 times at the 

United Counties Show with Haverford Golden 

Mist,Haverford Folly and more recentlly 2006 

Haverford Roses in the Snow.The ponies have 

won many bronze medals with most of the 

ponies in the stud having won at least one and 

we have 2 dual winners of silver medals being 

Haverford Child of the Mist and Haverford Folly. 

Ive been on the judging panel for over 20yrs 

having had the honour of judging at some of 

the major welsh shows,including Glanusk Welsh 

Stallion Show,Three Counties Show,Denbigh & 

Flint, Northleach Welsh Show,Welsh National 

Foal Show and the Royal Welsh Winter Fair and 

many more medal shows. 

My main other horse interest has been hunting 

and racing having been a Master of the 

Pembrokeshire Foxhounds for 7yrs 1992-1999 

and also have a passion for national hunt racing 

and amateur steeplechasing (point to pointing) 

having managed to ride a winner on my own 

home trained mare.

Council Newsbrief 

Decisions and Information from the 

Council meeting of 9th February 2008 

Council 

Mr. Poena van Niekerk has resigned from 

Council with immediate effect. Council 

thanks him for his input over the last four 

years and wishes him well with his future 

plans. 

Welsh Pony & Cob Society Journal 

Whilst Mr.Gustav Karlsson has every right 

to express his views on the activities of the 

Society this cannot be done in a context in 

which he may be viewed by readers as an 

official spokesman for the Society. Mr. 

Karlsson’s use of the editorial of the 2007 

edition to express his personal disagreement 

with the policies and composition of 

Council without prior consultation with the 

relevant body has resulted in a Council 

decision to withdraw its endorsement of 

the Journal as an Official publication of the 

Society. We fully acknowledge and appreciate 

Mr. Karlsson’s contribution in terms of 

time, money and effort to the development 

of a Welsh Pony & Cob Society Journal for 

South Africa and regret that it was necessary 

to take this decision. 

National Championships 

The National Championships will be held in 

Bloemfontein from 28th to 30th April 2008. 

The Supreme Breed Championships and the 

Section A Supreme harness Championship 

will take place on Tuesday evening. 

Competitors are once again requested to 

wear evening dress (suggested dress for 

handlers is white shirt, black trousers & 

matching coloured cummerbund and bow 

tie).

In the Sec. A Supreme Champion Single 

Harness and the Supreme Champion Double 

Harness, Top 5 placings will be made. 

Stables - a charge of R20 per stable will be 

levied. Stables will be reserved on a first 

come, first allocated basis. If anyone books 

and pays for stables but has not submitted 

entries for the show by the official closing 

date of entries, the stable fee will be forfeit 

and the stables will be re-allocated. 

Judges for National Championships confirmed 

to date are Miss Judith Reed 

(Haverford Stud, U.K.), Mrs. Barbie 

Gertenbach & Mrs. Bev. Williamson. 

Mr Grant Flannigan from Bloemfontein will 

be available on call as the official farrier for 

the show. 

Because of the concerns expressed by many 

competitors over the possible doping of 

ponies, it is intended to introduce dope 

testing at the National Championships. 

The prize-giving will take place at a supper 

on the last evening. Space is limited so 

competitors are encouraged to book their 

place when they enter. There is no guarantee 

that places will be available for booking 

during the show. 

NAMPO 

A decision to support this expo was taken 

at the 2007 AGM. We need a Convenor to 

organise and run a Welsh Pony & Cob 

Society stand and organise a daily display 

for four days from 13th to 16th May at the 

Bothaville Expo Centre. All reasonable

accommodation and transport expenses will

Constitution 

The changes to the Constitution passed at 

2007 A.G.M. have been approved by the 

Registrar of Livestock and will come into 

immediate effect. In addition several clauses 

have been added by the Registrar to bring 

the Constitution in line with the requirements 

of the Animal Improvement Act. 

These clauses will be circulated to members 

for information with the Agenda for the 

forthcoming Annual General meeting. Once 

the final version of the updated 

Constitution has been accepted by S.A. 

Studbook Association on behalf of the 

Registrar it will be published on the website 

and made available for members in printed 

form. 

Disciplinary Code 

Suggestions & Comments from members 

have been incorporated into this document. 

It will be circulated to members with the 

Agenda of the A.G.M. and proposed for 

approval at the Annual General Meeting 

2008. 

Judges 

Mr. Jack Gilfillan and Ms Dianne Nicholson 

have been promoted to the National Judges 

Panels for Breed, Riding and Harness. Mrs. B. 

Gertenbach has been promoted to the 

Regional panel for Breed classes. 

Raad Nuusbrief 

Besluite en Inligting uit die Raadsvergadering van 9 Februarie 2008 

Raad 

Mnr. Poena van Niekerk het uit die Raad 

bedank met onmiddellike effek. Die Raad 

bedank hom vir sy insette oor die laaste 4 

jaar en wens hom voorspoed toe met sy 

toekomsplanne.. 

Walliese Ponie & Cob Genootskap Joernaal 

Alhoewel Mnr.Gustav Karlsson die reg het 

om sy mening te lug oor die aktiwiteite 

van die Genootskap kan dit nie gedoen 

word in ‘n konteks waar hy deur die lesers 

as ‘n offisiële segspersoon van die

Genootskap beskou word nie. Mnr. 

Karlsson se gebruik van die voorwoord van 

die 2007 uitgawe om sy persoonlike 

meningsverskille met die beleid en 

samestelling van die Raad te lug sonder 

vooraf konsultasie met die betrokke liggaam 

het gelei tot ‘n Raadsbesluit om die 

onderskrywing van dié Joernaal as ’n 

amptelike publikasie van die Genootskap 

terug te trek. Die Raad erken en waardeer 

mnr. Karlsson se bydrae in terme van tyd, 

geld en moeite met die ontwikkeling van ‘n 

WPCS Joernaal vir Suid-Afrika en betreur 

die nodigheid van hierdie besluit. 

Nasionale Kampioenskappe 

Die Nasionale Kampioenskappe sal in 

Bloemfontein gehou word van 28 tot 30 

April 2008. Die Opperste Teelklas 

Kampioenskappe en die Seksie A Opperste 

Kampioen in Tuig sal op Dinsdagaand 

plaasvind. Deelnemers word weereens versoek 

om geklee te wees in aanddrag 

(voorgestelde drag vir hanteerders is ’n wit 

hemp, swart broek en dieselfde kleur 

kamarband en strikdas). 

In die Seksie A Opperste Kampioen 

Enkeltuig en die Opperste Kampioen 

Dubbeltuig sal die Top 5 plasings gemaak 

word. 

Stalle – ‘n Fooi van R20 per stal sal gehef 

word. Stalle sal bespreek word op ‘n eerste 

kom, eerste geallokeer basis. Indien enigiemand 

stalle bespreek en betaal het, maar 

nog nie teen die amptelike sluitingsdagum

NAMPO 

‘n Besluit om hierdie ekspo te ondersteun 

is gedurende die 2007 AJV geneem. ‘n 

Sameroeper wat ‘n WPCS stalletjie kan 

organiseer en beman asook ‘n daaglikse 

vertoning kan uitvoer vir 4 dae van 13 – 

16 Mei by Bothaville Ekspo Sentrum word 

benodig. Billike akkommodasie en vervoer 

uitgawes sal betaal word. Vir verdere

Konstitusie 

Die veranderinge aan die konstitusie 

voorgelê tydens die 2007 AJV is deur die 

Registrateur Lewende Hawe goedgekeur en 

sal onmiddellik in werking tree. 

Daarbenewens is verskeie klousules deur 

die Registrateur bygevoeg om sodoende 

die Konstitusie in lyn te bring met vereistes 

van die Diereverbeterings Wet. Hierdie 

klousules sal ter inligting aan lede 

gesirkuleer word saam met die agenda vir 

die toekomstige AJV. Wanneer die Finale

Here is truly a 

pony for all seasons 

Many people have commented on the 

lovely pony used in our adverts and on our 

website. The pony is Crossfoxes Sandpiper 

aka Munchkin. She was bred by Sandy 

Cuddy. 

This little 12 hand pony has been ridden, 

on a snaffle, by Ben and Anacy Lane and 

has won hundreds of rosettes for them but 

most importantly they have had so much 

fun with her. In the picture Ben, then 9yrs 

old, is riding Munchy through Noordhoek 

wetlands, accompanied by his other best 

friend Noo Noo. 

Ben has since outgrown Munchy and Noo 

Noo has sadly passed on but Ben, his new 

dog Baloo and pony Sachin do pretty 

much the same things still. They were 

however awarded Full Pony Club colours 

for Show Jumping this year. Now Anacy is 

riding Munchy and they graduated from 

Little League to Novice Showing in 

September last year. Munchy is a pony 

first. We don’t clip her body or ears, paint

In Dr. Wynne Davies se boekie Welsh Cob 

Champions (1985) beskryf he die algemene 

karakter van ‘n Cob as “the embodiment of 

strength, hardiness and agility. The head shows 

great quality with “pony” character, bold 

prominent eyes, a broad forehead and neat 

well-set ears”. Die liggaam moet diepte hê en 

in die bene soek hy “an abundance of flat 

bone”. Kyk ek na die fotos van die kampioene 

in sy boekie lyk dit nie so maklik om al drie 

hierdie eienskappe in dieselfde perd te kry nie. 

Dit bly natuurlik die uitdaging van enige teelbeleid 

om die ideale dier te produseer. Die 

moeilikste lyk vir my is om die mooi poniekop 

en die “abundance of flat bone” in dieselfde 

perd te voorskyn te bring. As die bene swaar 

genoeg is, raak die kop grof. Word die kop mooi, 

raak die bene fyn. 

Terwyl die Cobs hoofsaklik gebruik is as werksdiere 

was die sterk bene sekerlik belangriker as 

‘n mooi kop. Die voorkoms van die kop het 

mettertyd al belangriker geword en die ryvermoë 

belangriker as die werksvermoë van die 

Cobs. Dit het daaroe gelei dat ‘n aantal cobtelers 

in die Verenigde Koninkryk doelbewus 

besluit het om ryperde - met mooi koppe, minder 

bene en ‘n oorwegend ry-aksie - te teel. 

Natuurlik is daar ook tellers wat by die sentiment 

van die voorgeslagte wil hou. Die mense 

met wie ek gesels het, onderskei tussen die 

Cobs en die ryperde.

van beide rigtings in Suid-Afrika sou land. Ek 

dink daar is ‘n goie saak uit te maak van elk van 

die twee rigtings, maar elke eienaar en teller 

van Cobs sal met se eie smaak en voorkeure 

besluit wat om te doen. Vir my is dit net baie 

belangrik dat ons van hierdie onderskeid bewus 

moet wees en die saak goed deurdag hanteer. 

Ek wil dink dat dit moeilik (byna onmoontlik) 

gaan wees om met teling van die ryperdtipe 

Cobs na die tradisionele Cob terug te keer. 

By die Walliese Bergponies (seksie A) het dieselfde 

ding gebeur en het ons in die RSA die 

tradisionele tipe leer ken deur die Coed Coch 

ponies en die ander rigting deur die Revel 

ponies. So ‘n spatseltjie van laasgenoemde by 

eersgenoemde het ‘n goie uitweking gehad, 

maar ‘n oorverfyning het die sogenaamde 

“pugs” voortgebring waardeur die ponies skade 

gely het. Die Walliese Ponies (seksie B) is die 

swaarste deur die “nuwe” filosofie getref. Van 

wat ek kan uitmaak is die hele B-bedryf in die 

VK deurmekaar. Kan ons voorkom dat die twee 

rigtings by die Cobs ‘n negatiewe gevolg vir die 

Cobs het? Persoonlik dink ek dat ons baie gaan 

verloor indien ons sonder diskressie oor en 

weer tussen die twee tipes teel. ‘n Teelbeleid 

wat nie ‘n doel nastreef nie, gaan ‘n mens ook 

nêrens uitbring nie. 

Dit kan net tot ons voordeel wees as ons die 

saak deeglik bespreek - sonder om persoonlik 

te raak. Ek sien daarna uit om reaksie op hierdie 

skrywe te kry.

Vrystaat Verslag 

Dit was ‘n baie goeie jaar vir die Vrystaat op 

die gebied van kompetitisies asook groot 

skoue. Die Vrystaat het met twee Hoofslag 

vertonings hulle kant gebring en was daar 

verteenwoordig. Wat skoue betref het dit 

baie goed met ons gegaan. Van ons Juniors 

het baie goed op al die groot kompetisies 

aan die Rand gedoen soos “Horse of the 

Year”. Delandi Human - Opperste 

Kampioen Jong Kind se Ponie alle rasse. Die 

ESL kampioenskappe ‘n 3e vir performance 

riding vlak 3 en ‘n6de in die werkende ponie 

vlak 3, en dan ook twee span goue medaljes 

vir bg. Klasse. Die ander kinder swat deelgeneem 

het was die van M. Venter. 

Vrystaatkampioenskappe 

Wat ‘n groot sukses nadat de Wet besluit 

het dat ons kan en sal dit doen. Daar was 

maar min perde maar dit was die moeite 

werd vir elke vertoner wat daar was. Die 

total van die perde wat daar was was 35. 

Dit was maar vir uithaal en wys of jy het 

die loef afgesteek. Dit was ‘n baie suksesvolle 

skou en ons borggeld en prysgeld 

het die bedrag van R15,000 opgebring wat 

as baie hoog beskou moet word. Dit was ‘n 

baie aangename skou en so kan die jongere 

vertoners meer betrokke raak. Baie geluk 

aan al die vertoners, julle het julle baie goed 

van julle taak gekwyt. 

Nou kom ons by die hoekoms en waaroms? 

Ek spreek my voluit teen ‘n ingevoerde beoordelaar. 

So ‘n persoon kos ons net geld en 

beteken vir ons as ras net mooi niks. Daar 

bestaan nie ‘n storied at ons voordeel uit so 

‘n beoordelaar trek nie. Al is so ‘n persoon 

geborg, gee liwer die borggeld vir die 

genootskap sodat dit vir pryse aangewend 

word. Kyk nou maar elke jaar kom adverteer 

die oorseese beoordelaar net sy stoet hier. 

So ‘n persoon kan net teelklasses doen maar 

weet niks van ry of trekklasse nie. Moet nie 

dat potensieele beoordelaars van ander 

rasse sê ons is besig met ‘n sirkus nie.

Kyk na die standard van Klubskoue: 

Jammer om te sê die nasionals kampioenskappe 

asook streekskampioenskappe steek 

die loef af by klubskoue: Vat Cradock skou 

2007 hoe groot was daardie skou wat eintelik 

‘n Boerperd asook Saalperd skou was. 

Daar was ook in die 30 Walliese ponies en 

die standard was hoog. Die reels was streng 

vervolg. Niemand het sonder, of met ‘n verkeerde 

nommer die baan ingegaan nie. As ‘n 

vertoner nie reg aangetrek was nie is die 

baan net vir so ‘n vertoner geweier. Prysgeld 

baie goed soos R250 vir Grootkampioen 

enkeltuig en dan ook ‘n baan wat rondom 

staan van mense om 14 ponies te sien 

meeding vir die Groot Kampioen Enkeltuig. 

Dit is ‘n belewenis om te hoor hoe moedig 

die publiek die perde aan. Waarom staan 

ons met Bloemfontein terug vir alles en 

almal. 

Nou vra ek dat die versamel ring gids na die 

volgende asb moet kyk en nie die hoofbaangids 

in ‘n verleentheid stel om met 

mense oor die volgende te praat nie: 

Indien ‘n deelnemer sonder ‘n nommer die 

versamelring binnegaan stuur so ‘n persoon 

terug of weier dat die persoon in die hoof 

arena binnegaan. 

Persone met verkede nommers stuur terug 

of weier dat die persoon in die hoof arena 

binnegaan. So ‘n insedent stel die 

tabileerder in ‘n baie moeilike posisie. Dit is 

dan die verkeerde perd wat in die arena is. 

As die kleredrag nie reg is nie vra om die 

baan te verlaat. 

As die hek toe isis die hek toe en niemand 

moet binnegaan nie. As ‘n deelnemer weens 

omstandighede laat is sal ‘n redelike tyd aan 

die persoon gegee word indien dan laat is, is 

laat hek gesluit. 

Sulke insidente het met klubskoue gebeur 

en die hoofbaan gids het maar net sy hoed 

vir sulke persone alfgehaal (uit by die hek). 

Kyk asb dat sulke insidente nie met ons 

Nasionale Kampioenskappe gebeur nie. 

Sulke dinge doen net afbreuk aan die ras.

The Welsh Pony & Cob Society of South Africa 

2007 Pretoria Show - Regional Champs 

When Anthony and I were invited to judge the 

Welsh classes and other varied classes at 

Pretoria Show for a second time we were highly 

delighted. Immediately our thoughts returned 

to the beautiful animals we had seen at the 

show, the people we had met and the whole 

experience of visiting South Africa, particularly 

Kruger. 

Thirteen years had passed since our first visit so 

to refresh our minds we dug out our photo 

albums and the video we took at the show and 

afterwards. And so it was that we were even 

more excited when left Melbourne, Australia, for 

Johannesburg. 

This time we flew straight from Johannesburg 

to Cape Town where we were met by Gustav 

Karlsson and taken to his superb property and 

Welsh Cob Stud at Albertinia. Gustav and Glynis 

were amazingly generous hosts and we saw a 

great deal and learnt a lot while in their company. 

We flew back to Johannesburg for the show and 

were caught unawares by the unexpectedly hot 

weather. It was so nice to be able to meet up 

again with Sue Cook who had invited us to 

judge on behalf of the Welsh Pony & Cob 

Society of South Africa and the Pretoria Show 

Society. 

Although numbers in some of the Welsh classes 

were not large, there were ponies of quality forward 

and when I saw the final line up of 

Supreme Champions I was particularly pleased. 

I recalled being so impressed back in 1994 by 

the fact that many ponies appeared in their 

lead classes, then under saddle and then in harness. 

This time sadly there were very few in 

harness but the ponies I judged lead and then 

in their saddle classes were lovely ponies who 

gave a very nice show. 

I was very interested to learn afterwards that so 

many of my major placegetters were closely 

related, proving that some very dominant animals 

have made a lasting impression on the 

show scene. 

At the conclusion of judging on the second day,

when the Interbreed Supreme Championship 

was held, I felt very proud of the animals representing 

the Welsh breeds - there was Caernafon 

Tabuttana Dunkid as Supreme Champion Sec A, 

Vintage Count Pushkin as Supreme Champion 

Sec B, the Sec D mare Heron’s Ghyll Teresa as 

Supreme Champion C/D and Caegwyn 

Guinevere as Supreme Champion Welsh Part 

Bred. I was particularly pleased to see Llandilo 

Paragon in the the Interbreed Supreme representing 

the Open Ring, as she had been my 

Reserve Supreme Champion Sec A Mare. 

It would have completed the day for me if the 

winning Welsh Gelding, Dunkid St Peter, had 

also been eligible for the Interbreed as he was a 

very good type. 

For the Interbreed Supreme the arena took on 

an ethereal atmosphere as smoke (albeit from a 

braii) blanketed the exhibits and their handlers. 

Bathed in back light (from where I was watching) 

and wreathed in smoke the animals took 

on a heavenly appearance. Of twenty-two eligible 

exhibits, twenty were forward including five 

Welsh. When the ten finalists were announced 

they included the Sec. A, B, PW and the Open 

Section winner who was the Sec. A mare. Then 

when the top five were announced I felt we 

were in with a very good chance as the Welsh 

A, B and Part Bred were called forward. 

There was great excitement in the Welsh camp 

when the charismatic little Sec. A stallion was 

yet again called forward and sashed by the two 

judges. Spurred on by the applause and his success 

and covered in awards he thrilled the 

crowded grandstand with his wonderful victory 

display. To complete the Welsh coup the 

Reserve Supreme Championship went to the 

Welsh Part Bred. A great day for the Welsh 

breeds in South Africa. 

It is Interesting to note that back in 1994 when 

Anthony and I last judged at Pretoria the Welsh 

Part Bred Champion, Dimmock Dragonfly, also 

took the prestigious award of Interbreed 

Supreme Champion. 

Anthony thoroughly enjoyed judging the led

and ridden Anglo and Partbred Arabians, the 

Connemaras and the Working Hunter Ponies 

and was very pleased with his major award winners. 

Once again we were impressed by the warm 

welcome we received and the friendliness 

we were shown. The show was very well run 

and most enjoyable and we thank the Welsh 

Pony & Cob Society of South Africa for inviting 

us to judge and for providing us with exception-

Paddock Hill Stud 

“A Pony without an ego is a pony without a soul”. 

Paddock Hill stud is situated in Wilderness in the 

Garden Route. From the beginning - we registered 

with the WP&CS in 2004 - our aim was to 

acquire mares which were the direct, or very 

close, descendents of imported mares. Our 

focus, not surprisingly, was on the Badgemore, 

Coed Coch and Revel bloodlines. Although this 

decision has meant that our broodmares are of 

relatively advanced age, the plus side is that 

their progeny - sometimes over seven or eight 

generations - are proven. In this start to our 

stud the advice of Mrs Jean Budler of the well-

We are also committed to a programme of tight 

line-breeding, which, although it cannot be utilized 

to originate excellence, certainly is, we 

think, the only successful method of preserving 

old and treasured bloodlines. 

In our first year we acquired three mares, 

Wellingdene Abigail, Kadima Love Bug and 

Llandilo Romany. Abigail is a Badgemore 

Pegasus daughter (Pegasus by Twyford Splendour 

out of Badgemore Peony). Abigail is in fact the 

only purebred foal ever bred by her illustrious

father. After our acquisition of Abigail, we visited 

Glynis and Gustav Karlsson at their Freyja 

Stud in the district of Albertinia and saw Pegasus 

himself. He was a very grand old man. Our second 

purchase was our Kadima mare, Love Bug. I 

had spotted her at the George Riding Club where 

she was stabled and put out to graze amidst 

some sixty Thoroughbreds. I was lucky enough 

to acquire her when her child-owner lost interest 

in riding. Apart from her blue ribbon pedigree, 

she is in the judgment of all who have seen her 

quite the most exquisite mare. For the purchase 

of a third mare during this first, eventful, year at 

Paddock Hill, we looked to Llandilo Stud. I 

described what I was looking for to Jean - a very 

typey pony of the old fashioned kind. I cannot 

describe my delight when the float arrived at 

Wilderness and Llandilo Romany (out of Pendock 

Rosemary by Uyzel Smart) stepped off. As broad 

as a barrel and with a lovely dished head and 

bold eye, she is a most dapper little mare; she is 

also delightfully self-opinionated. 

Early in the following year we bought 

Bukkenburg Stella (by Coed Coch Nerog out of 

Springbourne Hayley) from Jean. A stunningly 

beautiful mare, she came in foal to Llandilo 

Victor Ludorum (by Nerwyn Llewelyn out of 

Bukkenburg Valerie). Her filly, Sweet Simone, is, 

for us, the quintessential of what we are aiming 

to breed at Paddock Hill. In 2006 two further 

mares joined our team from Llandilo Stud. The 

first was Llandilo Harebell. Harebell requires 

special mention. She is by Bukkenburg Vintage 

out of Bukkenburg Helen. Bukkenburg Vintage 

was by Coed Coch Nerog out of Revel Velveteen. 

Harebell’s dam, Bukkenburg Helen, was imported 

in dam (out of Pendock Harebell by Coed Coch 

Bari). As is well documented, Coed Coch Bari 

was purchased for 21,000 guineas - the highest 

price ever paid for a Welsh Mountain pony. The 

special stamp and equable temperament of 

Bukkenburg Helen is very evident in her daughter, 

Harebell, and, it seems, is characteristic of 

the H-line as a whole. Harebell came to us 

from Llandilo with a filly at foot, Heirloom (by 

Uyzel Smart). She has subsequently given us 

another filly which we have named High Noon. 

Harebell is an elegant and very correct Section A 

Welsh pony. The second mare acquired in this 

year was Llandilo Sundew (by Llandilo VIP out of

Torbry Sungleam - interestingly Torbry Sungleam 

(by Twyford Jock out of Torbry Sunshine) is a 

product of a father/daughter mating. Sundew 

came in foal to Llandilo Victor Ludorum. Her 

filly, Sun Coquette, stands out because she is, like 

her mother, cream in colour with a particularly 

lovely head. 

Oh for a stallion (at this stage) for this carefully 

selected band of broodmares! We will always be 

grateful to Warren and Misty Fry of Toretto Stud 

for their very generous offer to use their stallion, 

Llandilo Sabre (by Bukkenburg Vintage out of 

Torbry Sungleam and a full brother to Llandilo 

Squire). Sabre’s crop arrived in the spring of 

2006 - four fillies and a colt - and they can leave 

no doubt about his quality as a breeding stallion. 

In 2006 we enlisted the services of Llandilo 

Viscount (by Llandilo Squire out of Bukkenburg 

Valerie) also owned by Misty and Warren. 

Viscount has won the admiration of many Welsh 

Pony breeders and owners during his appearances 

at Bloemfontein. We are eagerly awaiting 

his crop of foals this month. 

Last but most certainly not least is the acquisition 

very recently by our Stud of a very grand 

and illustrious gentleman - Uyzel Smart. There is 

little I can add to this wonderful pony’s outstanding 

career as a breeding stallion. Sire of 

top class progeny, he is known perhaps particularly 

for breeding exceptional fillies to which he 

invariably has passed on his own quality and 

stunning movement. However his most prized 

legacy one day will surely be his utter sweetness 

and gentleness.
