Pretoria Show judge
Our overseas judge for the Northern Regional
Championships at Pretoria Show is Kathy Sheil
and she will be judging Breed classes. The
other judges will be Sydney Kidson and Sarah
Rose.
Kathy and Joanna Sheil jointly own and run
Dukeshill Welsh Mountain Pony Stud. Ponies
they have bred, owned and produced have been

Western Cape Show
Robertson Show
20 September to 2 October
The Western Cape Regional Show will have a
judge from Porthcawl,Wales to judge their
Breed classes this year. Mr. Jimmy Dykes of
the Crossfield Stud is on the Section A, C and
D panels of the W.P.C.S. He is also a highly
qualified Driving judge. He judged the Welsh
show driving classes at Royal Welsh in 2009,
having previously won the Championship in
1995 with Garnfach Gerallt and in 1999 with
Garnfach Glyndwr. His co-judges for the harness
classes at Robertson will be Mr. Bertie
Snyman and Ms. Di Nicholson, who will also
judge the riding classes.
The Western Cape committee and members
invite members from the other regions to join
them for an exciting 2010 Regional

Gelding Championships
At the 2010 National Championships prizemoney
was paid to the Purebred Gelding
Champion and Reserve; R1250 & R750
respectively. This was done to encourage the
gelding of top class ponies so that they can
promote the Breed as Children’s ponies. The
prize-money was sponsored this year by members
of Council but it is intended that in future
funds for this Championship will come from
the Breeding Stallion registration fees. Once a
formula has been established Regions will be
invited to apply for funds to promote Gelding
Championships at their Regional
Championship Shows.
We would like to thank the Strauss Family who
won the reserve championship at Nationals this
year for re-donating this prize-money back to
the fund.
Length of hooves
Hooves (with or without shoes) may be up to
90mm in length for ponies under 1,37m but no
bar shoes or studs will be allowed at this stage.
Council will do a full investigation of the
availability of suitable shoes and the recommendations
of a number of veterinarians. A
directive will be issued later in the year, after
the next Council meeting.
National Championship Judges
Because top Welsh judges are booked two or
three years in advance, we have already invited

EAP course to be
held in Tarkastad
On Friday 8th - Sunday 10th October Jean
Budler will be hosting an EAP course in
Tarkastad. This will be a workshop on the subject
"Understanding Horse Behaviour" from an
Equine Assisted Psychotherapy Perspective. It
will be facilitated by Rolynne Rensleigh. This
course will be of great interest and benefit to all
horse lovers and stud breeders.

(Telynau Stud) to judge at our Championships
for 2011. Between them they are on the panels
for all sections and can also judge most of our
ridden classes. Stop-press news is that David
has been invited to judge Section B ponies at
Royal Welsh next year.
However we will need local judges for the harness
classes and some of the ridden classes. We
therefore invite motivated written nominations
to be sent to the Secretary as soon as possible.
These nominations will be assessed by a panel
appointed by Council and invitations will be
issued to their chosen judges. You are also
requested to submit motivated nominations,
with a CV, for both local and international
judges for 2012.
Northern Region Judges
The Northern Region would also like you to
put forward written nominations for local and
international judges for major shows in 2011
and 2012. Shows to be considered are Autumn
Gold Cup 2011 & 2012, Pretoria Show 2011 &
2012, Summer Showing Festival 2011 & 2012
& Horse of the Year Show 2012. These nominations
should be sent or given to any Regional
Committee member.
Books for sale
One of our members has donated a selection of
second-hand books for sale. Some of them date
back to 1830s and all will be of interest to
horse-lovers. A list is available on the web-site
under news. Please contact the Secretary to
make offers to purchase.

LETTER
The Constitution
The Welsh Pony and Cob Society of SA has
had a bad experience regarding its
Constitution. One member of the Society
objected to the legitimacy of the AGM in
2009 because the agenda for the meeting
was posted 25 days prior to the meeting to
members and not 30 days as stated in clause
11.2.5 of the Constitution.
This member complained so vehemently
that the Manager of Stud Book and the
Registrar of Livestock agreed with him on
the unconstitutionality of the AGM in 2009.
Our agenda for the AM in 2010 called it a
meeting of members with all decisions made
as points for discussion again in 2010. At
the start of the AGM the meeting decided to
regard the meeting in 2009 as unconstitutional.
To me it felt as if the whole Society
was giving in to somebody who had
behaved like a child throwing a tantrum –
and we were wrong to declare the AGM of
2009 unconstitutional.
The Constitution is not an instrument for the
regime of the Society to govern the members.
It is an instrument that creates routes
for the members to serve the wellbeing of
the Welsh ponies. It is in legal terms the
property of the Society. The spirit of the
Constitution can never be to handicap the
work of the Society. It is always to help in
this regard. When the meeting in 2009 took
notice of the fact that the agendas were posted
a few days late and decided to continue
with the meeting, the mistake was rectified
and the meeting constituted as a legitimate
AGM. And to emphasize that this is the
way to use the constitution there is
clause11.6 which reads: No matter which
was concluded in a proper way at any meeting,
may be declared invalid because any
member did not receive notice according to
the requirements of the Constitution.
Hopefully this bad experience will help the
Society in future not to allow anybody to
misuse the Constitution for personal gain.

Changes to show rules
As passed at the Annual General Meeting
27th April 2010
1. Barren mares should be offered a separate
class at Regional and National
Championships, for each section and
Partbreds which will qualify the first and
second prizewinners for subsequent breed
championships
2. In the breed classes alternate runners may
be allowed. Handlers may be allowed to
swop with the permission of the judge.
3. In harness classes an optional ribbon is
allowed in the plait behind the ears of
Purebred ponies. Ribbons should be clearly
visible and consist of three different
colours of the exhibitor’s choice.
Change to the bye-laws
There will be a set protocol on the registration
of sections of Purebred Ponies and Cobs
as set out below:
A x A = A; B x B = B; A x B = B
C x C = C until measured at 5yrs; A x C = C
B x C = C until measured at 5yrs; A x D = C
until measured at 5yrs
B x D = C until measured at 5yrs; C x D = C
until measured at 5yrs
D x D = D until measured at 5yrs
Once a pony or Cob has been measured at the
age of 5 yrs it will either remain in the section
indicated above or be moved to the
appropriate section for its height. The onus is
on owners to provide a certificate to the
Office with any request to change sections as
a result of a height measurement.

1986 - 2010
Glenda and I spent 16 fun filled
years together and she is sorely
missed. When I walked in the field
to check anything she walked
alongside me as the good friend
that she was. I could write about
all the competitions that we won
together and there were many, but
it would become a tedious boastful
litany and I would rather remember her for
other things.Her bravery that was much greater
than mine in a scary hazard and her huge heart
that never let her down no matter what was
asked. She also had a sense of humour in as far
as a horse can, she would pretend to be afraid
of water or a piece of paper when on a training
drive but never batted an eye when it mattered.

The most memorable thing about Glen was the
sheer joy I felt from her when driving her and
that is the thing that attracted people to her I
think. To me she was beautiful, though not in
the classic sense and I suppose that was
because I loved her and I know she loved me.

D’leni Christmas Queen 1988 – 2010
Queen arrived in my life as a four-year-old.
She had had a few unfortunate experiences in
her earlier years, and despite being strongly
advised against buying her, she had something
special about her. I bought her, and despite
careful work – progress was agonisingly slow
in producing her as a ridden pony.
That X factor was only to be exhibited due to
the inspired advice of Monica
Marcus. Queen was hot, nervous
and frightened – and it was
thought a change to driving may
enable her to settle to a job.
From that time on Queen was to be
one of the most amazing ponies
this country had seen.
She won Multiple Supreme
Championships In-hand – the most
notable being SA National
Championships twice, Vaal Show
Interbreed and finishing in the Top
5 Interbreed at both Pretoria show
and Autumn Gold Cup.
She excelled in the ridden arena –
show jumping to 90cm, eventing, novice dressage
and of course Multiple Championships in
the show ring. In 1995 and 2000 she was
Supreme ridden Partbred at Rand Show and
SA National Championship Partbred Ridden in
2006.

Queen will however be best remembered for
her outstanding achievements in harness.
She was first shown in harness at the 1996 SA
Welsh National Championships – where she
took all three Championships she competed in
– Single harness, Fine Harness and Private
Drive.
For the next 14 years Queen was only beaten a
handful of times in any of the three categories.
She loved to perform – showing the extended
trot she was to be much admired for, and
always rising to the occasion. She died having
accumulated 33 500 Legion of Merit Points. A
record certain to stand for many years to come.
Queen however also believed she should be
treated as such – and demanded her comforts.
She was a pony who was never too hot and
always needed many rugs to be comfortable. If
she got cold – the noise in the middle of the
night ensured that I was woken and went to the
stable to put extra rugs on.
Such was the demanding nature of the most
giving pony I had the privilege of knowing.

DNA Profiling tariffs
2010
The Animal Genetics Division, ARC-API has
agreed that in 2010 all DNA samples sent from
the Welsh Pony & Cob Society (accompanied by
payment) will be charged at R185 including VAT
per sample.
To take advantage of this reduced rate, hair samples
(with roots) should be sent in a sealed envelope
to WPCS, P.O. Box 1029, Halfway House
1685. The front of the envelope should give the
following details:
Name of Pony, Name of Sire &Dam (with DNA
nos. where available), Owner’s name and
address. Samples must be accompanied by payment
or proof of deposit of R185 per sample.
Cheques should be made out to WPCS. Samples
sent without payment will be returned to the
sender or destroyed.
Confirmation of profile numbers will be routed
to the Owner via WPCS.
N.B. This offer only applies to samples sent via
WPCS. Samples sent direct to Irene will be
charged at the normal rate.

A memorable 2009-2010
show debut for
Paddock Hill
Our debut success in the show-ring has brought
much satisfaction to our team at home. After
an early decision not to compete until we could
enter our own homebred stock, the year 2009
seemed the appropriate time to enter the showing
arena. We were hopeful that by this time
we were achieving the standard which we had
set in our breeding programme.
The four Paddock Hill fillies which we chose
to enter were representative of the 2-4 years
class, the under 2 years class and the under 12
month filly class - junior fillies therefore,
which did us proud not only in these classes
but by also achieving success in the Supremes
at this early stage in their careers. We also
entered our stallion at Regional and National
level.
Our filly, Paddock Hill Sun Coquet, must perhaps
take pride of place. In the one and a half
years in which she has been entered, this
Paddock Hill Sun Coquet
remarkable pony has taken five consecutive
Junior Championship titles, two of which have
been consecutive South African Junior
Championships. During the same period, she
has also gone on to become Supreme
Champion at Heidelburg in the Western Cape,
Reserve Supreme Champion at the Eastern
Cape Regionals at Cradock and the SA Reserve
Supreme Champion at Nationals.

Frolic, has

Accordingly,
she has been
placed lst in
her under 2 Paddock Hill Sun Frolic
years filly class in the three shows in which
she has been entered (Heidelburg 2009,
Nationals 2009 and Robertson 2009). She has
also been judged Reserve Junior Champion on
two consecutive occasions at Heidelburg in
2009 and 2010.

Augusta, won
Reserve Champion
in Heidelburg in
2010.
Paddock Hill Sun Kissed
We have also had
the privilege of
having two and Paddock Hill Sweet Augusta
three ponies competing together in Supreme
Championships. So at Heidelburg in 2010 Sun
Coquet, Sun Frolic and Sun Kissed competed
against each other in the Supremes as did Sun
Coquet and Sun Kissed in the National
Supremes this year.

Mention cannot be made of the success of the
above Paddock Hill “Sun” strain without saluting

product of three different sires which highlights
how crucial good female lines are in any breeding
strategy.
There can of course be no stud without a stallion.
In his only two outings while in our ownership
Paddock Hill’s stallion, Llandilo Sabre,
has taken top honours in the Western Cape by
winning the Senior Champion Stallion class,
the Supreme Champion class. He was also
judged Western Cape Supreme Champion
Welsh Pony. At Nationals this year, Sabre was
SA Reserve Supreme Champion.
