Queen Mary Big Train Show – 2004
In an effort to preserve some great photos, I’ve taken a few replies and put them into this pdf file.
Only those posts/replies I could find that contain photos are included, but links to the full MLS
threads in which these posts appear are provided.
Enjoy,
Queen Mary Vendor Browse No. 1
Gary Woolard - 06/10/04
(I'm calling this a 'browse' , rather than a report, because there's nothing comprehensive about it -
- only what interested me as I ambled across the three decks of the show...)
MTH occupied the same place they did last year; a small booth just outside the
gangplank/entrance to the Queen Mary proper. I'm betting the BT folks put them outside because
of MTH's VERY loud sound effects!

Can you say "overhang?"
I knew you could...
Various people have reported that the show seemed less crowded than in previous years. I guess
that's so -- at least on Saturday afternoon. Here's a shot from the entryway...

USA Trains was right inside the door, as usual. Here's their show car --
And somebody's closely inspecting their Hudson.

The new GG1 got a lot of attention. Go check Shad's photo's for more pix of this beauty.
Hartland was around the corner. A lot of their traction stuff was evident --

And here's a shot showing their new mine train set.

This fellow was chatting with Michael Broggie, the Disney train historian who was sharing some
booth space with Hartland. I'm sorry I don't remember the fellow's name, and I should -- I think he
was one of the original Park designers (Josh, do you recognize him?) Anyway, he and Michael were
about to head over to Accucraft to talk about the possibility of getting the "Little Engine that Could"
produced in brass!

So since we're talking about Accucraft.... here's the cab-forward!
One of Accu's brass D&RGW paasenger cars, and a Goose #7 done in black

The new Westside Caboose #4, a flatbed Goose No. 6 in black, and a mining gondola.
And this beauty! A live-steam 0-6-0 switcher in 1/32 scale, based on a Southern Pacific prototype!

More to come....
QM Vendor Browse No. 2
Gary Woolard – 6/10/04
Carla says I should show you the "Hershey Candy" engine & cars that were in residence on
Aristocraft's wireframe display. (Altho' the 'honey car' on the bottom track is actually from their
"Teddy Bear Train.")

And among LGB's offerings for 2004 is this lighthearted "Snoopy" Flyer -
LGB is also offering the "Rhode Island" as one of a series of fairly accurate Disneyland &
DisneyWorld engines & rolling stock -
Which lead Josh Updike, our own "Parkdesigner", to ask "who's got the Disney franchise anyway?"

But if it's well-crafted, whimsical, rolling stock you're after, and you don't especially care if it's tied
in to the cartoon on your morning breakfast cereal, you can't beat the tongue-in-cheek offerings
from Bruce Hebron's "Metal Shed." Some of you may know Bruce as the fabricator, and often
designer, of the great 'AW-NUTS' cars that came from the pages of that magazine before its
demise. Here's his latest; an "observation" car with a decidedly Freudian bent!

And a couple of others pieces...

J.S. Woodcrafts is another vendor I've been keeping my eye on since they started coming to the
show a few years ago. They seem to specialize in industrial buildings that can show some
animation. Last year I got excited about their working aerial logging tram. This year my favorite
was a working stamp mill with drag saw. While the hammers click away, the reciprocating saw is
attached to a cam, and moves back and forth. (I have a fairly poor AVI of this if anybody wants to
see it..)
Here's a large mill with an overshot wheel (I think it's their 'grist mill.') Working water in that
trough at the bottom, and not a lot of spillage...

A great old oil derrick complete with moving 'walking beam' pump..

And here's a few larger industrial buildings...
Here's an UNKNOWN VENDOR that maybe somebody can help me out with. This woman has
brought her very detailed buildings, mostly houses, to the Queen for several years now. I've sorta'
passed them by because they're for indoor use only. But you just gotta' see this haunted house!

And here's a close-up -
Somehow I missed getting any flyer, or even a card. Does anybody know who she is?
I'll close out this mesage with a shot from Trackside Details, which I believe changed hands last
year? These brass water columns are simply jewels -- look at the valve work in the bases!

More to come...
Q.M. Vendor Browse No. 3 (and last!)
Gary Woolard – 6/10/04
I got a chance to chat with our own Barry of Barry's Big Trains at the show. That Arizona heat must
agree with him -- he seems hale and enthusiastic about getting the shop up and running again at
his new home!
Here's the latest on our M-B chassis! Looks like the Mason Bogie Masterclass will be back on the
rails soon!

Western Scale Models, which has been moving cautiously into G-scale for the last year or so,
jumped in at the show! They intend to produce all of the pieces of their gold mill, from stampers to
amalgamation tables to rock crushers, in 1:20.3. Here's their mill with the pieces available so far --

They've been producing workshop tools based on items in the Sierra R.R. shops. The last time
Carla took pix, in Pomona, I don't think the drill press on the right was available. If you can look
through the plexiglas, you'll see their full shop diorama.
Here's another newcomer to the Q.M. show. The folks at EconoBridge say they can produce a
premium hardwood bridge for you at app. $20.00 a foot.

Of particular interest are their curved bridges, built around just about any radius required, I guess!
The fellow there was showing me that it's necessary to build wider tolerances on a curved bridge,
to allow for overhang and underhang of your rolling stock!

Now if you want a metal bridge, here's one place to go! I guess I didn't realize until this show that
H&R Trains, who make a lot of high - end track, switches, and even stainless steel rail benders,
also manufactures the BridgeWerks line of aluminum bridges. The "Rosecrans" bridge that you see
to the left was actually built from the blueprints of a bridge that once crossed a major street in Los
Angeles.
If redwood is more your style, Comstock Construction has been showing up at the Queen for
several years now with an ever-expanding line of rugged buildings at reasonable prices.

In the realm of "Neat New Accessory You didn't Know You Needed", ParagonAero G Scale Products
was set up to make custom signs for your railroad right there at the show! Choice of 5" X 20" or 5"
X 40"; various colors of text & background. One of their demo signs was for the South Pacific
Coast, and it looked so good I almost tried to buy it! He also makes some nice looking, reasonably
priced wheelsets.

Light Rail Products is another small company new to the Q.M.; this fellow apparently specializes in
providing G-Scale Traction equipment, at least some of which he fabricates himself.
These molded clerestory end-caps, for instance, are designed to be put on your average Bachmann
coach or observation car.

Thus turning it into an Interurban (?)
Because switch requirements for traction layouts are often tight and complex (see photo above!)
he also makes a series of light-rail switches!
And I think that'll conclude our 2004 Queen Mary Vendor Browse.

Queen Mary Show - Saturday (Lots of Photos)
Dwight Ennis – 6/7/04
Accucraft's new 1:32 scale PFE reefers...

and the 1:32 scale SP caboose that goes with them...

And here's the 1:32 scale S12 under steam pulling them...

That's one heck of a train this C-16 is pulling!!!

C-16s passing like ships in the night... except it's day... oh forget it.

Here's our Fearless Leader in his booth...

And Shad's Dad, Mr. Dan Pulley. Always a genuine pleasure to see you Dan!

Our own Mr. Dave Hottmann (seated to the left of the smokebox) runs his K-27 on my little bitty
track's 10' diameter outer loop proving that it CAN be done! (haughty sniff) Thanks Dave
- not only was it fun, but it put the "radius snobs" in their place. hehehe

You know, you can try and plan for most contingencies at shows like these, but when your
umbrella blows over into the next guys display layout, it can still take you by surprise! It certainly
surprised the hell out of Shad! By the time I got my camera, he was already hauling it back
into place. Luckily, no damage was done to layout or umbrella. The same couldn't be said for
Fearless Leader's pride however.

Another C-16 photo (may have to get me one of these )...
Sunday's photos in a new topic.
Queen Mary Sat. Nite Barbecue Pix!
Gary Woolard – 6/7/04
(This is mostly just people snaps, folks...)
Last Saturday, as the Big Trains Show was winding down, preparations began for the first annual
MyLargeScale Queen Mary BBQ!
Trains were still running on Bob Starr's brand new steam track as barbecue and food chests started
to show up.

Tables getting set up, some hustle & bustle...
People and their folding chairs began to accumulate in the area. Here Shad & Yolanda are talking
by Dwight Ennis's new portable track, which he brought down for the show.

More people, more food...

We had some interesting visitors, who were themselves intrigued by our goings-on..

The pipers had come for a wedding at the Queen and came out afterwards to see the steamers.
Later, as it grew darker, I could hear them piping some more
Live steam and barbecue -- a perfect combination!
270-7024_IMG.jpg

And finally, here's another group portrait. If I do this right, it'll link to a really large version where
you'll be able to pick out individual faces. (A couple of those faces are a bit blurred -- folks who
moved between the two shots that comprise this digital panorama. Sorry!)
Click Photo to REALLY REALLY Enlarge
MY thanks, once again, to Carla -- without whom this itinerant hobo would be at a loss for pictures,
and much else.
Queen Mary Show - Friday (Lots of Photos)
Dwight Ennis – 6/7/04
I got into Long Beach a little after four Thursday afternoon. John Corradini and I had arranged top
meet at the Desk at three, but it took me longer to drive than I expected. Thanks for waiting John!
Always real fun to hang out with ya!
Bob & Jackie and Roland arrived a little later with Bob's track. We had lots of help and both tracks
were set up in jig time.
Chris Walas got in around seven I believe with his wife and two daughters. Wasn't long before John
and I joined therm for dinner. Needless to say, we had a lot of fun.
Fast forward to Friday morning... bright and early and Bob's already steaming up! Chris Walas
(visible) BS's with Roland Seavey and John Corradini in the background.

Here's Chris, the proud papa of his little Ruby, which saw more run time this weekend then it
probably has in its previous lifetime. She ran real well too!

Bob parked his trailer right in the middle of his track, so he merely had to step out the door to run
trains. Jackie is sitting in front of the door already busy with her needle point (or whatever it's
called). Miss Daisy struts her stuff around the track. This photo is one for the books folks! After
losing everything in the fire less than one year ago, Bob & Jackie and Miss Daisy are here
surrounded by those things they love best... each other, Miss Daisy, live steam, and some very
good friends!

Yours truly and my "little bitty track"... Bob's is bigger than mine (a fact he never tired of
proclaiming.. waaaaahhhhhhh)!! But I have him beat hands down in the gut size dept!

John Corradini and Roland Seavey BS while Jackie... well, I don't know what Jackie is doing.
Mooning me I think.

Bob doing what Bob does best.

Pssssssstttt.... here's photographic proof that Chris is in reality a double agent as he fraternises with you-know-who... I saw Chris
passing slips of paper under the track... honest.

Steve and Yolanda Borges got in Friday to help set up the Ozark Miniatures booth. Here Yolanda (in
the dark glasses) talks to David Rhoton and his wife and daughter. This was my first time meeting
the Rhotons, and they are among the nicest people around!!

People started showing up in force on Friday. Left to right... Alan Prichard, Roland Seavey yawning
(he does that a lot), Mike Reilley, and Steve Borges (Yolanda is partly out of the frame).

Gary Woolard and his wife dropped by next. Steve Borges is seated at left while Yolanda again
shows me her back.

And here comes JJ - John Jablonski - always a real hoot at these events. Every year he has a new
story that keeps me roaring with laughter. Thanks for the company JJ! I had a ball!

Lots of folks took a break from setting up their own boots and displays to drop by and say hello.

Yolanda shows her latest figures. She's a real talent!! Her figures are wonderful, and she keeps
coming up with better ones!

Several of us adjourned to Ten Forward for a well-deserved beer or three (hey, it was hot out
there)!! Here's JJ and Alan Prichard

Bob's track from the fourth deck...

Friday night and it was time for the MLSers to gather in the Piano Bar. Here's Mike Reilley and JJ
stretching their legs out.

Chilli Charlie (a.k.a. Charles Scherer) from Ohio. I believe he was the MLSer who traveled furthest
to the show. Nice to finally meet you Charlie!

Chris Walas gets to sit after a long day on his feet...

Left to right - Chris, John Corradini, Steve Borges (standing in the background), and Ron Wenger.
Ron's another funny guy with lots of stories. Good to meet you too Ron!

Ron is on the left. The next gentleman I met, but I'm sorry to say that the name escapes me.
Steve Borges is next with Alan Prichard on the right.

The guy at left is the gentleman who's name I can't remember at the moment, next is Steve
Borges, Alan Prichard, Yolanda Borges, Paul Burch, and Marge Reilley.

Completing the circle is Paul Burch and Marge Reilley.
I'll post Saturday's photos next in another topic.
Queen Mary Show - Sunday (Lots of Photos)
Dwight Ennis – 6/7/04
Okay, here's the last topic of photos (for me at least)...
I woke up Sunday and went to my car to get a pack of smokes, then on to Bob's track where Dear
Jackie got me a cup of coffee. It wasn't long before JJ showed up, so we ended going up to the
Promenade Deck for a Starbucks Cafe Mocha. After that opened my eyes and got my heart started,
I hit my room for a Triple-S and then on to the 3rd Annual MLS Breakfast.
Clockwise from Left - Jackie & Bob Starr, JJ, and Roland Seavey...

Left to right - John Corradini, Alan Prichard, and Chris Walas...

Far Left is a gentleman whose name I can't remember to save my life (my sincere regrets -
someone help me out here) and to his right with her back to the camera his wife. Seated to the
gentleman's left is Paul Burch and his wife whose name also escapes me. I think I fried my brain
out in the sun...

Garry Paine and his wife... I should remember her name because I met her last year too, but I'm
afraid I don't. A very nice and friendly lady though. Anybody got those memory pills??? Seated
between and behind them is Chilli Charlie.

Phil Jensen of HLW is on the right and I didn't actually get a chance to meet the other gentleman,
so I can be forgiven for not knowing THIS name!

Thure at left and Russ Miller at right. The guy behind them is.... errr.... better take another one of
those pills...

Stan Cedarleaf and I have a tradition of taking a picture of each other taking a picture of each
other. Since Stan couldn't make it this year, Garry Paine was kind enough to step in.. See?? I
was thinking 'bout ya Stan!

Barry Olsen muses on the meaning of it all while doing his impression of The Thinker (or maybe he
was just hung over)...

Chilli Charlie at left and Marge & Mike Reilley...

Dana Walas... a real little sweetie!! Must get it from her Mom's side... in fact, after meeting Chris'
wife Gillian, I'm SURE she gets her sweetness from her mother's side!

Chris Walas in action...

and Yolanda Borges...

Steve Borges with Stan and Rick on a stick... I told him in Rick's case, he had the stick stuck in the
wrong place. I'm glad Stan was able to attend in some form at least. Wasn't the same
without him.

As we headed back out to the track, I snapped these from the Promenade Deck of Dave Hottmann
holding down the fort.

Dave's K-27 hauling an eleven car train of his AMS rolling stock...

So naturally I had to see if my C-21 could puill the same consist...

She worked hard, but after some fiddling and a few adjustments by Master Dave, she pulled them
okay. Check out that plume!!

Who says Live Steamers can't pull???

This is Gordon's SR&RL Forney- we were laughing so hard I can't remember his last name! What
a riot (despite his being a "radius snob")!!

Left to right - Jackie and Bob Starr and Mike Reilley...

Left to Right - Dave Hottmann, Roland Seavey and John Corradini fix the wheels of Bob Starr's new
AMS stock cars so they'll roll.

Accucraft's new S12 pulls their new reefer string...

Yolanda wants a live steam two-cylinder Shay. I think she wants the open cab version. So I took it
upon myself to provide her with her first run. My original plan was to have her do everything, but
I'd forgotten to turn off the radio the day before and the batteries were dead. Still, she fueled,
filled and fired it herself. Left to right - Yolanda Borges, Mike Reilley and Yolanda's uncle.

Eugene showed up Sunday and was kind enough to snap these photos for us.

Finally it was time to pack up and go home. Here's my RAV4 all loaded and ready to travel...

Nary an inch to spare...

Everything fit inside except the four straight sections of my track, which were strapped on top on
the luggage rack. Note the tunnel through which I can see out my rear view mirror.
I had a wonderful time!! Each year keeps getting better and better! Of course, absent friends were
greatly missed... Stan Cedarleaf, Towne & Cindy Comee, Bob "Flatracker" Martin and his wife,
Linda Sue and Joel, Fletch & Allison, Darryl Noble, Rod Fearnley and his wife, Duncan & Debbie,
Kevin Miller, and all the rest - the only thing that would have made this better is if you'd been
there too!
I want to thank all my MLS Family for a wonderful time, for your friendship, and for all the fun!!
This place is like no other on earth!
SPECIAL QUEEN MARY PICS!
Ms. Pcentral – 6/7/04
Hey Guys!!!
We made it home, and I have a few special pics from our time on the QM. I would like to
thank Shad for posting most of my pics! It sure makes it easier for me! I really
enjoyed "meeting" Rick and took "special" care of him, while he was with me!
Here is a shot of the MLS booth with Shad and his dad, Dan.

This is Bob Baxter! He was beaming after getting the girl!

Here are Jim and Becky Francis, Karen Alt, Marge Reilly, Steve Borges, David Bailey, Alan
Pritchard all gathered in front of the MLS Booth!

Chris Walas at his best!
This could be the NEXT figure challange! What do you think?

Here is Stan Cedarleaf checking out Gold Coast Station's booth!

The truth about Rick Raively's trestle comes out!!!
Here he is in Bridge Masters booth!

Here I caught Stan Drooling over USA Train's Hudson. It was pretty impressive!

And last but by no means least, Rick in the center of his own universe! I was glad to see
he finally made it to the QM!
As you all, can see I had lots of fun!! As did Stan and Rick! Hope to see everyone again
soon!
Gn15 at the Queen Mary!
Gary Woolard – 6/7/04
Remember Stan Cedarleaf's tribulations with the Gn15 mining track he built? ( Don't have the
URL's handy, maybe somebody could post?)
Stan built (as usual) some wonderful models, and Chris Walas sculpted some Walasites for him.
But the durn'ed cars kept de-railing! So Stan wound up rebuilding the mine train as a Gn2' or
Gn30", I don't remember which. Stan concluded, with a consensus, that Gn15" was just too
'sensitive' to go outside into the real world.
But dang, the stuff is cute! And if you've seen some of the incredibly tight little Gn15 layouts done
by Carl Arendt, you'd be intrigued too
So when I walked by Ozark Miniatures booth at the QM, I noticed they were pushing a line of
Gn15 detail parts! --

They had Don Gage on hand, with his very own 15" module -
That blur on the left is one of Don's industrial speeders doing its thing. He was kind enough to stop
things for a sec' so Carla could take this shot --

And here's another engine hiding under a shed --
Don had seen Stan's threads, so I asked him what he thought about Gn15" in the garden. While he
agreed that the track had to be reasonably smooth, Don felt that the over-riding cooncern was the
balance of the engines and cars themselves! He felt that with a little lead shot in the right places,
he might have been able to cure Stan's de-railment woes!
Wish I knew more about Ozark's stuff -- for some reason I didn't even pick up a flyer. And I don't
know how much of Don Gage's module is scratchbuilt (to Don's usual incredibly high standard) and
how much is built from Ozarj castings!
So investigation is continuing, as they say. But in the meantime, I thought I'd post the pix!
