Car tester combines work and family
Sylvia Futterer brings her
baby daughter and husband
with her when she comes to
Arjeplog to work for BOSCH.
She is an electrical engineer
developing systems for cars
and feels that it is easier to
concentrate on her work
when her family is nearby.
Her colleagues and boss are positive
to Syliva’s way of combining
career and family life and she is a
pioneer.
However, some testers think she
is destroying the myth that working
in Lapland is extreme and only
for the adventurous.
The fact that testers can stay in
private homes and that there are
charter flights direct from Germany
to Arvidsjaur made their plan
possible.
There are families where the husband
takes care of the children while
the woman earns a living. Sylvia Futterer
and her husband Adrian Acupanda have
taken this idea one step further.
They have shown that family and
career are compatible even in extreme
cases.
Sylvia has worked in Arjeplog for
four years and she likes it very much.
Adrian, a seaman, had planned to go
back to work after their daughter was
born. But things changed, both parents
felt that they could not leave their beautiful
child. Adrian has given up his
career for the time being and together
they decided to work it out in another
way, a better way. Sylvia spoke to her
bosses at BOSCH who agreed to the unusual
request.
Now, after about a month in Arjeplog,
Sylvia from BOSCH thinks breast-feeding her baby
is as important as her work as an engineer and is
happy to be able to do both.

Combining work and family life
Adrian loves his new role although it
is very unusual in the Phillipines, where
he comes from for the husband to stay
home and look after the child. Being a
seaman he has seen many parts of the
world but only for hours at a time. In
Arjeplog he has time to get to know
the local people and culture and he
enjoys that.
So far Sylvia and Adrian only see the
advantages of baby Louise coming with
them to Arjeplog and they hope that
this will inspire others to find ways of
combining work and family life.
Sylvia is very grateful that BOSCH
gave her this opportunity and that the
practical details were fixed so easily.
She feels that her colleagues support
them, but Sylvia and Adrian think
that perhaps some people are not so
happy that they have destroyed the myth
that Arjeplog is an extreme place suitable
only for real macho adventurers.
Their eight month old daughter, Louise,
is very happy to be in Arjeplog, because
this is where Mommy and Daddy are.

popular.
✯ that ‘Hatten’ is the name
of the restaurant at Arjeplog
Hotel, which used to be
called Silverhatten.
✯ that many Daimler-
Chrysler testers are staying at
the hotel apartments in
Laisvall, 39 km from Arjeplog
where the lead-mine
was.
✯ that according to the latest
statistics, Arjeplog has the
lowest crime rate in Sweden.
✯ that there have been quite
a few traffic accidents involving
car testers and locals
recently. Luckily no-one was
badly hurt.
✯ that some locals, using a
tractor, pulled a tester and his
Audi out of a snow bank on
Saturday. This was at Bukt
(10 km off the Silver Road to
Norway). The locals were
disappointed that the tester
seemed to take it for granted
that they should help him.
He just shrugged his shoulders
and said he had no cash.
✯ that a tester was visited by
his mother during the market
weekend, taking advantage of
the charter flights between
Germany and Arvidsjaur.
✯ that the wife of an Australian
BOSCH tester has been in
Arjeplog for three weeks. She
is really enjoying her stay in
this place that is so different.

I have my dream car - a veteran: a
white Opel kadette from 1970.
Present Car:
I also have an old Volvo.
What do you do in your spare time?
I spend time with my family. I enjoy
running and watching sport. In
summer I like to fish and in winter
snow-mobiling. I am a member of
the Filadelfia church and take part in
activities there.
What is good about Arjeplog?
It is safe here, the Nature is wonderful,
we live in the most beautiful
place in Sweden. People are open. It
is easy to get things done, everything
is so close and everyone knows
everyone else.
What is bad about Arjeplog?
There are less and less people here
and this is bad in terms of maintaining
good service. It is hard to run a
business when there are not so many
people in the kommun, municipality.
Music you listen to?
All kinds of music but not hard rock.
What is important in life?
Concerning work: it is important to
have a job that you enjoy and where
you feel needed.
David Holmner
Concerning the family: it is important
for me to be a fair and thoughtful father
and to be there when I am needed. And
it is important to be a loving husband.
Concerning life in general, I am a Christian
and try to live by Christian values.
The rescue team/firemen
A group of about 30 people (4 women
and the rest men) work part-time for a
rescue service team (räddningstjänst) in
the kommun.
These firemen, as they are also called,
are on duty one week each per month.
During this week they must be able to
report at the fire station (on the Silver
Road, diagonally across from the OK
petrol station) within 5 minutes of the
alarm sounding.
They are called on for all emergencies
including fires, traffic accidents and lifesaving.
They get about 60 calls per year, some
are false alarms such as automatic alarms
set off by mistake.
Oops!
Some days it is very
busy at Arjeplog Hotel
during lunch and
accidents can and
do happen!
So all we can say
is...oops!

have so much time for other

music, such as Enja and
Sarah McClachlan.
What is important in life:
To have a good family,
friends and health.
Their purpose was to take a
close look at the work being
done at the Knorr Bremse facilities
in Arjeplog and in Germany.
Some Saami want to kill a wolf living in the mountains. They say the animal is a threat to the
reindeer. But the authorities have said no to their request because the wolf comes from Russia and
is thought to bring new blood to the very few wolves still living in Sweden.
A lot of unfounded fears about wolves have brought them to near extintion.
