Dogsailing-first in the world
Dogsailing is a combination of dog-sledding and parasailing. For the first time in the world this was tested on the
test tracks in Arjeplog.
“Dogsailing” is a new
winter sport and was
tested for the first time
in the world on the test
tracks on the “BOSCH
See” in Arjeplog last
Sunday.
Jens Claassen left Germany
ten years ago and lives in the
municipal area of Arjeplog
with his wife and dogs. He
makes a living thinking up
and arranging adventures in
Lapland, mostly for German
people.
One day, while drinking
beer with a friend, Jens got
the idea of combining the
ancient way of travelling on
sleds pulled by dogs together
with a hightech parasail.
They constructed a special
sled with a security wire release
system. This was then
attached to eight strong
husky dogs. They waited for

the right weather conditions
to test their idea; not too
cold, windy or snowy.
Finally, last Sunday, when
the weather conditions were
good, they tried it out on the
frozen lake and it worked!
Claus Loderer, from Bavaria,
made the historic first
flight over Lake Hornavan
pulled by the huskies. Is this
the beginning of a new and
exciting winter sport ?!

HEARD THRU´
THE GRAPEVINE...
✯ that a car spy with a large
camera and lens was seen this
week in a blue Audi A3, with
Norwegian registration number
plates: VF 12268.
A green Renault Mègane with
Norwegian plates was also
spotted.
✯ that a car company had a
fully equipped and furnished
office built in Arjeplog, the
only problem was that they
couldn’t get in because the
builder had forgotten to make
a hole for the door!
✯ that a “Berge-bier” is the
beer you have to give the
person who pulls you out of
the snow bank or ditch.
✯ that Mark Walker of Rover
locked himself in his Range
Rover whilst in the BMW
car park. Luckily he had his
mobile phone and could ring
for help.
✯ that many testers make
use of the sports hall. For
instance, Knorr Bremse and
Bosch play indoor bandy
twice a week.
✯ that some testers wonder
where Kraja’s DJ, Ingo, is.
They miss him and his good
music.
✯ that the car spy that went
into the Mercedes garage two
years ago and took off the
camouflage of a prototype is
back in this area again. He
has an old, blue Golf with
German registration plates
and he has been seen with a
woman driver.
✯ that a local woman said
that she always thought Englishmen
were boring, until
she met the Rover testers.

Interview
with a local No mosquitoes in the winter
Jill comes from the middle of Sweden
and has been studying tourism
and the hotel business in Wilhelmina, a
town in Lapland. She worked last winter
at Arjeplog Hotel as a trainee for 5
weeks and then returned to work there
during the summer. Jill is now one of
the receptionists and will be in Arjeplog
for the whole winter test season.
Jill likes to be in Arjeplog and to
work at the hotel. She prefers the
winter season in Arjeplog as there is
more happening and she does not like
the mosquitoes that are plentiful in the
summer months.
At a time when many of the young
people are leaving Arjeplog because
there is no work or because they
think Arjeplog is too small, it is nice to
know that there are young people who
are moving to Arjeplog and who want
to stay here.

The Silver Museum
The story of Silver Museum began
with a young doctor who came to
Arjeplog in 1922 and stayed for the rest
of his life.
Einar Wallquist, the Laplander doctor,
not only practiced medicine in
Arjeplog but was so fascinated with the
people and the landscape that he wrote
books about them, painted and drew
pictures of them and collected everything
and anything that he could find.
This collection is part of the exhibitions
at the Silver Museum and they document
the lives of both the settlers and
the Saami (Lapps).

The best things about Arjeplog:
The people are so nice. It is a safe place
to live, it is peaceful and very beautiful.
The bad things about Arjeplog:
Sometimes it is a little too peaceful. I
miss going shopping.
What is important in life:
Love is important. To love and to be
loved. I also think it is important that
my family and I are healthy and happy.

It is also open every Tuesday evening
from 20.00 until 22.00 during February
and March.

Many Moose Hunters
There are more than 1000 registered
moose hunters in the municipality or
kommun of Arjeplog, where there are
only 3500 people. About 600 moose
were shot during the last hunting season,
which was from September until
December 1998.

Age: Well, I have a chassis from the 60’s
and a power unit from the 80’s.

Favourite food: I like all food. Steak is
one of my favourites.
Dream car: The last thing I would
want to dream about is a car.. but the
car I’d buy is an old classic like the Etype
Jaguar. I also like Mr. Bean’s Mini.

Spare time activities:
In England I do things with the kids. I
also like to keep fit. I used to play
football before I hurt my knee.
In Arjeplog we try to do some sport or
activity every evening, and then drink
and have fun and sleep.

What’s good about being in Arjeplog?
The people, without a doubt! The locals
as well as those who live in the area
and come to Arjeplog on Friday and
Saturday nights. Socially it is fun here.
And the nursing staff is very good.
What’s bad about being in Arjeplog?
The people who complain that there is
nothing to do. There is so much to do
here and I think the testers should get
out more and eat out and try to contribute
to the community by using the
services and spending money here.
What is the first thing you do in your
hotel room?
Check the bathroom... for spiders.
What do you think is important in life:
To live life to the full. You don’t know
what will happen tomorrow. I honestly
believe that. I was involved in a bad car
accident in 1990 and then I realized
that life is important and we must make
the most of it.
Women car testers work well in a man’s world
It is unusual to find women car testers. This is
simply because there are not so many women
who are interested in technical things and who
study engineering and become car testers.
However, there are a few and in Arjeplog you
always seem to notice the few women testers
among the hundreds of men.
Sieglinde Beyer and Anke Jedikowiak work for
BOSCH with the development of vehicle dynamics.They
work in teams and everyone seems to
think that the atmosphere is better when there is a
woman in the team.
They enjoy being in Arjeplog and love the snow
and winter weather. They have hardly ever seen so
much snow. They also really enjoy their work as it
is very varied. They work on the software on their
computers and then go onto the tracks and tests the
applications on the cars.
Sieglinde was upset that she did not manage to
see a moose before she left Arjeplog (she leaves
today). Anke will still be in Arjeplog for some days,
so perhaps she will be lucky enough to see one
before she leaves.
