Moose Village - Adventure Village
When you enter the small village
of Jutis you will see a large moose
which is made of wood. If, however,
you go on a moose safari
you are almost guaranteed to
see the large animals live in their
natural habitat.
‘No moose - no money’, is the
promise from the hunting team
in Jutis.
Jutis or Juthas in Saami might soon be
changing its name to Moose Village. It
is not on the road signs or maps, yet.
The 30 or so inhabitants in this
remarkable village have managed not
only to survive but also to make their
village famous in the whole of Sweden
as well as in some other countries.
It all started a couple of years ago
when the villagers were trying to find
ways to make money for the upkeep
of their community centre.
Some-one said, as a joke, “Why
don’t we make a calendar with the
men in the village posing more or less
in the nude?”

Look! Moose in the forest! There is great excitement when the visitors see the moose.
Lars Westerlund got the job to
produce the pictures and the calendar
was a great success. They sold many
calendars and got enough money to
keep their community centre going
for a few more years.
This year they made a new calendar
but this time some of the money will
be given to a cancer charity. In the
60’s and 70’s many of the men in Jutis
died from cancer, probably due to
chemicals that they were using in the
forest.
Moose Safaris
Now they are arranging moose safaris.
Again the villagers came together
to work out what they could do to
collect money. Nearly all the people
in Jutis, women and men alike, are
hunters. In order to hunt moose you
must be good at finding them.
In winter there is no hunting so
they decided to use their skills to show
visitors these large animals in their
real habitat.
We were invited to join a group of
Germans who were trying out the different
activities available for tourists in
the north of Sweden.
They were taken in comfortable
snow-mobile sleds to look for the
largest animals in Sweden. It was not
so easy to find them, but the hunters
of Jutis know their job and within 40
minutes all the visitors were able to
have a good look at these magnificent
animals.
It is definitely a special feeling to see
moose in the wild. The Germans were
very pleased with the trip in spite of
the cold, with temperatures down to
nearly minus 20°C. The big warm fire
and the sandwiches that were served

• Moose lose their horns every winter.
Around December and January
moose shed their antlers, which are
sometimes quite magnificent. After
the mating period in autumn they no
longer need their male symbols.
Every year, the horns of the male
moose grow larger and larger, so the
older the animal, the larger its horns.
Reindeer are the only deer where
equality among the sexes allows both
males and females to grow horns.
• Hornavan Hotell is proud to
announce that they now have an
expresso machine and can offer good
coffee drinks.
• A paraglider lifted a snow-mobile
off the ground and one person was
injured. Some people were trying to
pull a paraglider with a snow-mobile.
It worked so well that the snowmobile
also went up in the air. Both
the paraglider and the snow-mobile
finally came down onto the ground.
The driver of the snow-mobile was
not hurt but the pilot hurt his back.
It is Pick Up Time, not Wake Up Time.
‘Please be ready on time for the
airport bus’, says Gordon Flinkfeldt,
from Finkfeldts Buss.
The bus that drives passengers from
Arjeplog to Arvidsjaur Airport has
become very popular. It is very much
appreciated that the bus picks you up
at your home or hotel. However, that
is also where there have been a few
problems.
Gordon explains that some people
seem to think that the time they
are given (specially for the morning
flight) is Wake up Time, but it is Pick
Up Time. It is crucial that everyone
is ready when the bus arrives. The
driver does wait a short time for the
passengers, but sometimes they just
have to leave.
When the bus comes late, some
passengers get nervous and think they

• In the last issue of The Arjeplog
Times we wrote that some car testers
got stuck driving on a ski track in
Arjeplog. Now it happened again.
This time it was a Swedish driver in
Piteå (a town 230 km away) that had
to leave his old Volvo on the track
after getting stuck.
• A moose collided with a snowmobile!
Torbjörn Holmlund, a tourist guide
and part-hotel owner of Hornavan
Hotell, promised his guests that they
would see a moose on their snowmobile
trip. And they certainly did see
a lot of moose, because one ran right
over the snow-mobile, breaking the
wind screen. Neither the man nor the
animal were hurt, but it was a scary
experience.

Spies catch spies & more
As usual this time of the year there are
a lot of car spies lurking in the snowbanks.
We hear stories both about
friendships, or at least acceptance, as
well as tales of near war between car
testers and car spies.
A spy took this picture of another spy
taking a picture of a car.
Some spy photographers will do anything
in order to photograph a prototype. And
some car testers and security guards will do
almost anything to try and stop them.
One spy photographer recently
reported to the police that he was
physically stopped from moving. He
was blocked in by a couple of security
vehicles. The spy saw the prototype
but he was not able to take the
picture.
Another spy was hiding in the snow
banks waiting for exciting cars to
drive by. Instead, he was targeted by
security people armed with cameras.
They proudly displayed their catch,
but minutes later a colleague of the
‘photo model’ managed to get photos
of a prototype as it entered into the
gated compound.
“You got us but we got the car,” wrote
the happy spies to the security people.
The quest for the first picture of
new car models has escalated to such
a degree that the photographers no
longer co-operate with each other.
Four of them are now working for
Automedia, the biggest distributor of
spy pictures and some of the others
are freelance photographers.

of spare time goes to fixing it up.
What is good in Arjeplog?
I love the real winters here. This is
what I miss in the south of Sweden.
Governor of Norrbotten visits Arjeplog
Quietly he walked into Kraja to
have lunch. The only thing that
gave him away was his clothes.
He was dressed in a dark grey
suit, blue shirt and colourful tie
and he did not look like your
regular car tester.
Per-Ola Eriksson is the Governor of
the county of Norrbotten and he lives
in Luleå. You could say he is the king
of the North, the highest official there
is and a direct link to the government.

We have a summer house in this area
and for me coming here to wintertest
is like coming home.
It is so easy to get out into Nature
here.
What is bad in Arjeplog?
Nothing really except the distance to
the rest of Sweden and the world.
Music you enjoy?
I enjoy all kinds of music.
What is important in life?
To live every moment and know that
everything is possible.
To quote Robert Frost:
“Do not follow where the path may
lead...Go instead where there is no
path and leave a trail”.
Matilda is an unusual car tester. First
of all she is a woman and there are
not many women in this business.
Secondly, she lived in Arjeplog for
the first 5 years of her life and then in
Arvidsjaur, where she grew up. They
also have summer cottages in this
area, so she really feels at home, when
she comes here to winter test.
Norrbotten (English meaning:
Northbottom) is a Swedish province,
landskap in the very north of Sweden.
The population is just under 200,000
in an area of 26,810 km².
Eriksson was visiting Arjeplog
because he is trying to find new job
opportunities for this area.
He also likes to visit during the
winter so he can see how the town of
Arjeplog is bustling with hundreds
of car testers. He likes to read The
Arjeplog Times.

There is something going on in Sweden
today. Something threatening to all
people living in scarcely-populated areas.
The government is, by every means possible,
trying to force people to move from these
rural areas into the cities.
Throughout history, ever since the 17th
century, it has been important for
Sweden to provide basic services, such as
postal services, for all its inhabitants. This
has always been the pride of the Swedish
government and of the Swedish people. The
idea was that citizens should be able to live
in every part of Sweden.
However, this has totally changed now.
No more is it a matter of course that you
can receive your post wherever you
live. It is not a matter of course anymore
that you are able to get banking services or
buy petrol at an acceptable distance from
where you live. The defence of the idea, that
all parts of Sweden should live, has been
abandoned.
This is truly shameful. It is time to raise
up and fight against this urbanisation of
Sweden that is being forced upon us. Everyone
should have the right to basic services
no matter where they live in the country.
Only then is each and every person truly free
to choose the place where they want to live,
instead of being forced to move somewhere
in order to have a chance of a normal life.

Name: Anna Jonasson
Age: 20
Married: Boyfriend, Fredrik.
Home: Arjeplog. I grew up here but
will be moving to Arvidsjaur in the
autumn to go to a nursing school and
to be with my boyfriend who lives in
Arvidsjaur.
Occupation:
I work at Frasses, frying hamburgers,
cleaning, washing dishes, etc. I have
worked here for about 5 years, first
on weekends when I was at school
and for the past year, full-time.
Favourite food:
Planked steak with fillet of pork.
Dream car:
A yellow hummer.

Spare-time activities:
Snow-mobiling and in the autumn I
German Couple Bring their Own Snow-mobile
Kaspar and Bozenka Peinitz
live in Magstadt near Stuttgart
but every winter they come to
Arvidsjaur and Arjeplog where
they enjoy about 2,000 km of
snow-mobiling.
They tried driving a snow-mobile
for the first time in Quebec in
Canada and they liked it so much
that they decided to buy their own.
They bought one in Germany,
because they did not know the
rules in Sweden. However, it was
not so easy to find a dealer selling
snow-mobiles in a country where
only people with special needs are
allowed to use them.
They finally found a dealer and
it turned out to be cheaper than in
Sweden because of lower VAT.
Now the retired couple
come every winter to
enjoy snow-mobiling in
this area.
“It is perfect for us
here in Arvidsjaur”,
they said, “we stay in
our caravan and can
drive the snow-mobile
straight out into an
adventure. When we go
to Arjeplog, we drive
our snow-mobile there.”
The Peinitzes used to
travel to warm countries
but now they prefer to
be in the cold.
Their next snowmobile
will probably be
bought in Arvidsjaur,
where there are many
more to choose from.

What’s good in Arjeplog?
It is quiet and safe. I love the Nature
here.
What’s bad in Arjeplog?
There is not so much to do here for
young people.

What’s important in life?
To be safe and secure. To feel good.
To have a job you enjoy.
It feels exciting to move to Arvidsjaur
but I know I can always come back if
it doesn’t work out.

Adventure means the unexpected and when Lars Westerlund
came charging past the group on his motorised spark
(kick-sled) the cameras came up once again.
Jutis equals adventure village at least for visitors. Contact

Footnote: Jutis is situated 45 km from Arjeplog along the
Silver Road to Norway.
Moose are hunted in September and October. Nearly
1000 moose are killed in Arjeplog every year.

Popular Chef Moves from Arjeplog to Arvidsjaur
Karim Ameziane was a very popular chef when he was in charge of Mathörnan
in Arjeplog. His creative dishes and wholesome lunches were the main reasons
for his popularity. Now he aims to turn Stalo Krog in Arvidsjaur into a favourite
restaurant for car testers and locals alike.
“Of all the places I have lived in Sweden”, says Karim, “Arjeplog is my favourite.
Now I hope it will be just as nice here in Arvidsjaur”.
Different circumstances forced Karim to move to Arvidsjaur. Now he is
the owner and chef of Stalo and he is sure to build the same reputation in
Arvidsjaur as he enjoyed in Arjeplog.
One speciality he has is charcoal-grilled meat, which will be served with this
month’s special luxury buffet.
Karim and his crew also plan to have pub and disco evenings.
Karim Ameziane has bought Stalo Krog in Arvidsjaur and is planning to make it
one of the most popular spots in Arvidsjaur.
The cameras came out when Lars Westerlund came driving on his
motorized spark (kick-sled). A 4 hp 4-stroke engine powers the
contraption. He said he found it on the internet for 8000 kr and
bought it right away.
