• With every pile opening there must be picked test logs from the null-version and tested analogue to the conserved samples • After the opening of the piles the chosen test logs must be controled for bark beetle attack again. Mahler PUBLICATION DATE: 2002 ORGANISATION : Forest Research Institute of Baden-Württemberg COUNTRY: Germany ABSTRACT CONTENT: 1.Introduction: Storm “Lothar” caused a huge amount of wind thrown round wood, which had to be processed and preserved. Under instruction of the Forest Research Institute of Baden-Württemberg about 3500m³ beech round wood for production of veneer were packed up for the “Danzer Veneer Company” into plastic film. Parts of the round wood were examined for different parameters in the Danzer factories of Kehl and Winsen after end of preservation. The results and the grading data will be represented in the following chapters. 2.Methods: • The goal of the research project is to document the grade of quality considering frontal and collateral discolorations for a conservation period of up to 16 month. • For the packaging of the piles there had been used plastic film that was welded to create an air proof atmosphere inside the packed piles. • The 3500m³ beech logs were packed up in 38 piles wrapped in plastic film. The size of the piles was 50 to 150m³. • After the storage period the piles were unpacked to document and assess the exterior and interior wood quality.
