Report of the Symposium on Conservation and Sustainable<br />
Resource Use in <strong>Argentina</strong> (106th Sitting)<br />
After a minute's silence for the young people killed in<br />
the Puerto Madryn fire, delegates watched a film on<br />
nature in <strong>Argentina</strong>.<br />
The symposium was then divided into three. The<br />
first part consisted of the following speakers:<br />
Dr Tomás Schlichter, Director of the Forestry<br />
Investigation Programme of INT A, on desertification<br />
in <strong>Argentina</strong>; and<br />
Lic. Jorge Cajal, General Director for the Natural<br />
Resource and Human Environment National Programme,<br />
on the Argentine National Biodiversity<br />
Programme.<br />
Mr Francisco Erize, Advisor to the National Parks<br />
Administration, also contributed.<br />
The second part included papers by:<br />
Dr Nestor Barbaro, Soil Investigator, on a critical<br />
vision for Argentine development; and<br />
Ing. Jose Luis Panigatti, on the work of INTA.<br />
The third part started with a paper on the conclusions<br />
of the First National Congress of Young Environmentalists,<br />
presented by Cecilia Elizondo, from Fundación<br />
DIEZ. The following then made presentations:<br />
Lic. Juan Javier García Fernández, <strong>Argentina</strong> <strong>IUCN</strong><br />
National Committee, on the Argentine programme<br />
for conservation and sustainable development;<br />
and<br />
Lic. Fernando Ardura, <strong>Argentina</strong> <strong>IUCN</strong> National<br />
Committee Coordinator, who gave a summary of<br />
the General Assembly.<br />
On behalf of the <strong>IUCN</strong> President, Bing Lucas, Chair of<br />
CNPPA, thanked all those who had organized and<br />
contributed to the symposium. Ing. María Julia Alsogaray,<br />
Secretary of State for Natural Resources and the<br />
Human Environment, then spoke. The symposium<br />
ended with a tango.<br />
