TMHS volleyball preview
Dumond hopes to return to the states

There's always room for
improvement. Take the case of the
Tewksbury Memorial High School
Girls Volleyball team. Even
though they went to the states last
year, they are not going to rest on
their laurels.
"Last year was the first year
Tewksbury qualified for the slates
ever," said head coach Nancy
Dumond. whose team went 6-14
last year. "I expect to do much
better this year. Our goals arc to
definitely qualify for the states and
have an all around winning
season."
<strong>Helping</strong> Dumond will be three
returning seniors, Vivian Lupoli,
Alison Parker, and Jennifer Gaipo.
Also returning is junior Catherine
Sheridan. Juniors on the squad are
Lisa Marco. Michelle Harris and
Julie Griffin. Rounding out the

After qualifying for the state
tournament for the first time in
years, the Tewksbury Memorial
High School field hockey team is
looking for a return engagement in
the postseason.
But with nine seniors graduated
from last year's club that went
9-1-7 before falling to Tyngsboro
in the Division II North quar-
terfinals, there will be some holes to
fill.
"It's lough to say," said third-year
bead coach Pat Ryser about her
. team's objectives for the upcoming
season. "Every coach's goal is to
have a winning season and to try to
get to the tournament."
This year's Redmen are led by

Joining Maher and Segur as
returnees arc juniors Lauren Bibo
(midficld), Kristcn Cronin (mid-
field), Devin Walsh (back) and Jen
Boycc (forward).
In addition to the seven players
returning from last year's squad,
there are several other underclass-
men who arc vying for roles in the
starting line-up and the varsity
roster, which have yet to' he
determined.
One position that has been filled is
goalkeeper, where junior Maureen
Cronin figures to be the starter
replacing Sue Perkins.
So far, the team has looked good
in double sessions and its one
scrimmage, according to Ryscr.
"We have had one scrimmage
against Pcntuckct," said Ryscr. "At
that point, we hadn't split the
varsity and junior varsity. And we
did a decent job."
Tewksbury's final scrimmage will
be Friday against Stoneham at
home. On Wednesday, the Redmen
scrimmaged Concord-Carlisle.
Ryscr believes that the teams to
beat in the Mcrrimack Valley
Conference will be Chelmsford.
Havcrhill and Mcthucn. Tyngsboro
is always strong, but since the
school has recently added girls
soccer and has a very small enroll-
ment', that program will not have
the monopoly on talented athletes as
it has had in the past years.
Tewksbury opens its season on
Monday against Lawrence (3:30).
The game was originally scheduled
to be the Lancers' home game, but it
will be played at TMHS because of
renovations at Veterans Stadium,
Lawrence's home field.

Some of the players were in the
Junior Olympics and that helps out
a great deal."
According to Dumond, the team's
strength will be their defense.
"We're a scrappy team. On
height we might be a bit short, but
we make up for it in defense.
Nothing hits the floor and they're a
quick team," said Dumond.
Dumond forsees tough com-
petition for her squad.
"The league will be tough. The
Mcrrimack Valley Conference is
the toughest in Massachusetts.
Dracut is a tough team. So is
Chelmsford, Lawrence and An-
dover. They're all tough teams.
There is also some new non-league
teams we're playing against. We'll
have to have a good showing every
game," said Dumond.
Dumond has been preparing her
team by playing scrimmages, as
they play against Wilmington on
Friday. On Saturday Dumond's
squad will play in a mini-
tournament in Reading.
Tewksbury opens the season at
home against Concord Carlisle
next Tuesday.
