PAGE S-18-WEDNESDAY/THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 3, 4,1997 How can I keep my patio plants healthy when I bring them indoors in the fall? Q: We have several hundred dollars' worth of yard and deck plants. Not only are the plants expensive, but they require several seasons to reach a good size and full growth. What can we do to prevent their dying off during the winter? A: One couple we know stores their plants under fluo- rescent lights from mid- October to the end of April. They sit many of the plants on shelves arranged atop a small dinette table in their basement storeroom. For hanging plants, they have hung pipes on chains from the ceiling, with fluores- cent shop lights above. The shop lights are often on sale for $10 each, or less, and the bulb only costs $1 each. The cost of operating them — for elec- tricity — is only pennies per month. Q: We are restoring a 100- year old house on a budget and on a room-by-room basis. Our current project is one of the baths — specifically the old tub. We like its old-look charac- ter, but not its beat-up condi- tion. What would it take to refuush the tub? A: The first option is to have the tub resurfaced by a profes- sional. Depending on the color and location, the pros may charge between $200 and $250 to resurface a bathtub with an epoxy finish. There are also refinishing kits available for the do-it-yourselfer. The kits can be made to work, but our experience indicates a high failure rate when folks try to refinish the tub themselves. The problem is getting a good bond between the new epoxy coating and the old tub finish. You have to start with a surface that's really clean. While the old tub's surface ap- pears to be smooth and un- broken, in fact there are tiny pores in the finish that collect soap scum and dirt. The pros overcome this problem by giving the tub a strong acid bath. Industrial strength acid is very dangerous to handle — es- pecially by a novice. An alternative would be to mix a very strong solution of TSP (trisodium phosphate). Follow the directions on the TSP con- tainer to mix the solution to the strength recommended for use as a paint remover. If you are very careful in the cleaning and sanding steps, you should get at least five years of service out of the finished tub be- fore you have to repeat the pro- cess. Clean the tub with TSP solution and a stiff bristle scrub brush. Scrub the tub repeated ly. This is the most important step of the job. If you fail to get the surface clean, the epoxy will peel off the tub. Rinse the tub with clear water to remove the TSP. The next step is to sand the tub to break the glaze of the porcelain finish. Use 80-grit wet or dry paper to wet-sand the finish. Again, this must be a complete job. Any little sec- tion left unsanded is a prime candidate for peeling finish. The final step is to apply the epoxy. Probably the easiest ap- proach is to buy a tub resurfac- ing kit at your local home cen- ter.
