44 West Allotment, Pillbox<br />

(HER 1788)<br />

This pillbox is <strong>of</strong> a regular hexagonal shape,<br />

with a large gun embrasure on each side<br />

except for the one containing the door, which<br />

has a smaller loophole. This is a classic<br />

example <strong>of</strong> a Type 22 pillbox, one <strong>of</strong> the<br />

most common types. Inside is a Y-shaped<br />

brick ‘anti-ricochet wall’, designed to stop<br />

rebounding bullets inside the pillbox from<br />

causing harm to its occupants. Earth has<br />
