Thomas Jakob, ’02 (AXP-1), reports:
“Chicago M.B.A.’s of various
nationalities gathered last fall at
the Paulaner Pub in Singapore to
celebrate in true German style.
Organized by AXP-1, it was a night
of sausages, table dancing, and
freshly brewed Oktoberfest beer.”
Before the summer recess, a dozen
alumni attended a talk by chapter
president Ruiz-Morales, who also is
president of the Clavijo-Tamerlane
Association of Spanish-Uzbek
Friendship. He presented “Leadership
Secrets of the Great Tamerlane,
as Narrated by Castilian Ambassador
Ruy González de Clavijo in His Mission
to Samarkand, 1403–1406.”
Ruiz-Morales reports: “Tamerlane,
the second-largest conqueror
of the second millennium after
Genghis Khan, had a highly effective
business philosophy with which he
built his empire from Moscow to
Cairo, from Istanbul to Delhi, from
Baghdad to Samarkand. Most of his
methods would today be termed
politically incorrect, like chopping
off the heads of the inhabitants of
Oktoberfest in Asia: Alumni gathered for a fall pub event sponsored by AXP-1. Pictured above are 2002 graduates
and friends of the school (from left) Churn Poh, Misha Curral, Astrid and Laurent Rung, Dick Pang, Thomas Choo,
Swee Nee Tay, Seak Sze Tan, David Tan, Thomas Jakob and his wife, Valerie, and Stella Lau.
cities that refused to surrender
immediately to his demands. Still,
his impressive empirewide communications
system, his just-in-time
weapons-manufacturing facilities,
his scheme of highly centralized
controls with highly decentralized
decision making, and his policy of
joint ventures and revenue sharing
with adjacent kingdoms and fiefdoms
were all forerunners of today’s
modern multinational company.
“Clavijo’s book contains memorable
lessons on policy making,
diplomacy, negotiation, and strategy.
The session was the second of a
series where we mingle business
topics with pure leadership topics.
Thus, following talks on e-business,
new ventures in retailing, and an
upcoming talk by the chairman of
BBVA on corporate governance,
we also have scheduled a talk by a
manager of a major NGO charity
and a session by Chus Lago, the only
woman who has climbed Everest
alone and without oxygen.”
