New York Chapter Honors Sherman R. Lewis Jr., ’64
For the second time in its 25-year history, the Chicago GSB New York
alumni club granted its distinguished alumnus award. In September 2002,
it was awarded to Sherman R. Lewis Jr., ’64 (above), vice chairman and director
of Lehman Brothers, who was honored for his volunteer efforts to help
the GSB and its New York alumni, as well as his success on Wall Street.
“When you speak with people about Sherman, you tend to get words
that describe character rather than titles and tenure,” Robert E. Kiernan III,
’87, told the audience. He described Lewis as a man of “intense passion,
immense integrity, boundless enthusiasm, focused perseverance, charm,
grace, and unswerving loyalty.”
Andrea Bass, ’78, said after the event that there was “no greater champion”
of the GSB’s New York club than Lewis, who helped draw speakers
including the late Nobel laureate Merton Miller. Lewis is an active member
of the Council on the Graduate School of Business, a group of top executives
that advises dean Edward A. Snyder on program issues and provides a
link between the academic and management communities.
Lewis has spent 29 years in various senior positions with Lehman
Brothers and its predecessor companies, including Shearson Lehman
Brothers, Shearson/American Express, and Loeb Rhoades & Company.
He has held his current position since 1993.—P.B.
