Women’s Leadership Forum, a
Chicago GSB executive education
seminar supported by the UCWBG.
The group held many events—and
accomplished many specific goals—
in 2002, according to Eva Ziegler, ’97,
2002 president. Over the year, speakers
included Cheryl Francis, ’78, board
member of Hon Industries and
Lands’ End, who discussed building
leadership connections; Sheila
Penrose, executive-in-residence
at the GSB and president of the
Penrose Group, who spoke on
values as a foundation and source
of strength; and Penny Pritzker,
who spoke on nonprofit boards.
UCWBG also supported recruitment
of women and fostered an
alumnae network for employment
opportunities, contributing to the
highest percentage ever of female
students in the incoming class. The
Web site (www.ucwbg.org) was overhauled
and now includes events, job
listings, and other membership services.
UCWBG implemented the
Leadership Initiative Program,
increased membership levels, and
created financial strength through
corporate sponsorship.
Alumnae Investigate Nonprofit Boards at UCWBG Event
Successfully serving on the
board of a nonprofit organization
means matching
your priorities, time available,
and core competencies
to the needs of the organization,
according to Penny
Pritzker. The president of
Pritzker Realty Group,
founder and chairman of
Classic Residence by Hyatt,
and former chairman
of the board of the
Museum of Contemporary
Art was the featured
speaker at the second
annual University
of Chicago Women’s
Business Group nonprofit
networking luncheon.
More than 300 GSB alumnae met the chairs, presidents, and executive
directors of 61 Chicago-area nonprofits, including theaters, museums,
schools, and health and social service organizations at the November
2002 event. Held at the Museum of Contemporary Art and sponsored
by Sidley Austin Brown & Wood, the gathering also gave alumnae the
opportunity to post their resumes to a Web site that was available
to the nonprofits for a limited time.
“Last year, one business school graduate we met at this event agreed
to become a new and valued board member,” said Dennis Conroy,
a representative of the American Cancer Society. “This year, we have
more modest aspirations. We just want to further familiarity with
our organization.”—Jennifer Vanasco
