Artwork Description |Robert Irwin, one ofthe most pivotal and influential artists working in the United
States today, began as apainter in the 1950s. Throughout the 1960s his
methodical reduction of signs in painting led to his ‘breaking of the frame’ of
painting and objects. As one of the pioneers ofthe ‘Light and Space’ movement
in Los Angeles in the 1970s and early 1980s, Irwin’s innovative experiments
moved him towards adirect exploration ofaesthetic perception as the fundamental
feature ofart.
All That Jazz (2011) is an experiment with the perceptual qualities of light, playing
with rhythm, texture, densities, temperature, and chromatic relationships. The
light tubes reflect one another, and the spaces between the light tubes allow
the two adjacent colors torefract, resulting in avast range ofhues.
Irwin was the first artist to receive the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur
‘Genius’ Grant (1984). He has been represented by The Pace Gallery since
1966.
