Artwork Description |‘For the original event in London in 1972, Iinvited fifteen photographers and
filmmakers to meet at aprepared space in order to record their own presence.
To each Iexplained that ‘the subjects of the event and your camera are the
other photographers and filmmakers.’
Afterwards, the filmmakers contributed their footage, and the photographers
sent me their prints and slides. Iintended to edit the material into afilm, and to
construct some kind of final installation that would evoke the original prepared
space of mirrors, lights and newspapers; but as things turned out, my work
changed direction and the footage and the ideas remained in storage. lt was
almost forty years before this second stage was fully realized.
The installation that now represents the final form ofthe work was completed
early in2011. lt is worth noting, perhaps, that in 1972 the figures, armed with
cameras and continuously producing still and moving images of one another,
seemed like akind of hallucination. Today this looks almost routine.’ (Anthony
McCall, New York, 2012)
