New products for Manufacturers New products for Manufacturers The company confirmed commencement of on-sun testing of its innovative CPV semi-dense array modules with integrated optics, thermal management, power conversion and data collection. This Alpha Testing phase is being conducted at the company’s Research Park in Phoenix, where CPV modules are currently being manufactured by the Company as part of its product development program. Specifically, the company said its module is capable of operating with nonuniform flux (concentrated sunlight) using a novel approach in secondary optics and power conversion, which for the first time enables the modular CPV to be integrated into a range of sizes of solar dishes and tower/heliostat collectors and is not captive to a particular design or system. As an alternative to other CSP the technology uses no water and provides an alternative to steam and other power generators. The system is high concentration and incorporates dual axis tracking for greater capacity, and utilizes CPV cells that are capable of 40% efficiency or more. Lower cost per kWh power will additionally result from the design focus on low cost components and manufacturing processes. Monier Group acquires technology for InDaX solar products from Schott Solar The Monier Group strengthens its position as a technology leader for the interface of PV products to the pitched roof and acquires Schott Solar’sInDaX technology for manufacture of roofintegrated photovoltaics. The contract was signed on 16 August 2012 and apart from the framing technology includes the rights to use the InDaX name as well as patents related to the product. Financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed. The system is an essential part of the so-called portrait roof and has already been launched in Monier markets in Germany, Italy and South Eastern Europe. Further market launches are planned for the United Kingdom and France in the course of the year. Through the acquisition Monier secures that both its own customers and customers of Schott Solar will continue to be able to be offered a premium in-roof product. “The InDaX allows Monier to tap into promising new distribution channels in the PV market. We are building on a technology that will allow us to more strongly benefit from a trend that sees solar systems becoming independent of feed-in-tariffs and being increasingly used for decentralised own consumption,” explained Jens Milnikel, director of the Business Line Solar Roof Systems. Experts from the business line and the Technical Centre of the Monier Group had already closely cooperated with Schott Solar for the market launch and further development of the InDaX system bringing in their leading roofing expertise. Monier will not take over the PV laminate production but rather build on partnerships with established manufacturers purchasing their systems as it does for its other photovoltaic systems. SolarWorld initiates technology upgrades to boost solar panels’ performance edge SolarWorld, the largest solar manufacturer in the Western Hemisphere, celebrated its fifth anniversary of revitalizing, expanding and staffing a formerly idle semiconductor wafer factory here by announcing new investments totalling $27 million to upgrade and replace several factory systems and debut technological advances that will boost the power output of its high-performance solar panels. Work to install new manufacturing systems through the first quarter of 2013 will implement three technological advances fostered and tested by SolarWorld research-and-development specialists in Oregon and Europe. All three upgrades will increase the power output of SolarWorld’s photovoltaic cells – the light- sensitive building blocks of panels – to propel the company further ahead in its solar-technology leadership worldwide. For competitive reasons, SolarWorld will not detail the upgrades. The work will employ dozens of contractors’ employees, without affecting either the company’s Hillsboro workforce of about 1,000 or its total unit output. Yingli’smulticrystalline PV modules excel in Intertek’s PID test Yingli Green Energy Holding Company Limited, a leading solar energy company and one of the world’s largest vertically integrated photovoltaic manufacturers which markets its products under the brand “Yingli Solar”, has informed that its multicrystalline PV modules successfully passed the Potential Induced Degradation (PID) test conducted by Intertek Group plc (“Intertek”). This test was conducted to assess power output of the Company’s multicrystalline PV modules under severe conditions of high voltage, high temperature and high humidity. According to the test results, Yingli Solar modules ranked at the top of the class. Intertek is a leading provider of quality and safety solutions across a wide range of industries worldwide. The PID test was conducted under stringent conditions of 85 degrees Celsius, 85% relative humidity, and 1,000 volts of system voltage bias for a duration of 48 hours. The test results showed that the power degradation of Yingli Solar modules was lower than 1%. Intertek further tested Yingli Solar modules for a duration of 96 hours, and found that the modules were still below the 1% degradation level. 22 – Global Solar Technology –August/Sept 2012 www.globalsolartechnology.com
