This public and community consultation process, and the results obtained from it were important elements in the<br />

development <strong>of</strong> the Management plan for the Tobago Cays Marine Park Project. This information was used in conjunction<br />

the results <strong>of</strong> several years <strong>of</strong> study by the Government <strong>of</strong> SVG and the French Mission for Cooperation (1994, Anon.<br />

1993, 1996).<br />

to read and entertaining and at the same time <strong>of</strong>fers a realistic glimpse at St. Vincent and the Grenadines. This is achieved<br />

with the aid <strong>of</strong> over 200 beautiful color photos and maps which complement the descriptive text.<br />

<strong>The</strong> section on the Grenadines is 56 pages long and includes individual chapters on Bequia, Mystique, Canouan, Mayreau,<br />

the Tobago Cays, Prune Island, Palm Island, Union Island and Petit St. Vincent. This section also examines the history,<br />

sailing, boat building, fishing and whaling exploits <strong>of</strong> the islands' inhabitants.<br />

This review, along with other sectoral reviews, contributes towards the National Biodiversity and Strategy Action Plan for<br />

Grenada. This review focuses on land use and environmental planning. <strong>The</strong> documents initially assesses the status <strong>of</strong> land<br />

use and environmental planning in Grenada, socio-economic and political conditions <strong>of</strong> land use, existing institutional and<br />

legislative framework for land use and environmental planning, and cross sectoral issues, existing measures/ programs. An<br />

array <strong>of</strong> activities with adverse impacts has been identified, along with a summary <strong>of</strong> gaps within the sector. An analysis <strong>of</strong><br />

the root causes <strong>of</strong> biodiversity has been provided such as market failure, government/ policy failure, institutional failure,<br />

poverty and proximate causes <strong>of</strong> loss <strong>of</strong> biodiversity. Furthermore, it assesses the existing needs such as a comprehensive<br />

land policy, physical development plan, inter alia, regulations for Environmental Impact Assessments (EIA), and the<br />

development <strong>of</strong> Best Management Practices.<br />

depicts the people and their history and special way <strong>of</strong> life. It gives the reader an idea <strong>of</strong> the vivid market scenes, carnivals,<br />

flora and fauna, business and industries. Details are given on boat building and whaling in Bequia and fishing in Mayreau;<br />

world class resorts on Petit St. Vincent, Young Island and Palm Island and the exquisite houses <strong>of</strong> the rich on Mustique.<br />

Report <strong>of</strong> the noise survey conducted on the island <strong>of</strong> Mustique in response to repeated complaints from homeowners on<br />

the island that noise from various sources was interfering with their enjoyment <strong>of</strong> peace and tranquillity they expected to<br />

enjoy in the island environment. <strong>The</strong> problems identified were vehicular and road noise, social gatherings, construction,<br />

aircraft operations noise, cargo handling noise at the jetty, legal aspects. <strong>The</strong> findings <strong>of</strong> the study are summarized.<br />

This study sought to understand the phenomenon <strong>of</strong> poverty in St. Vincent and the Grenadines both from primary and<br />

secondary data sources and from the people themselves. <strong>The</strong> findings are based on three main sources: a national survey,<br />

community-level situational analyses (CLSAs) and an analysis <strong>of</strong> key institutions and organisations. <strong>The</strong> objective was to<br />

arrive at measures to address both the immediate conditions <strong>of</strong> poverty and the underlying factors that lead to such poverty.<br />
