The Criminal Justice Consultative Council has always taken a very close interest in race issues
within the criminal justice system and has actively promoted good practice in the treatment of
minority groups. Fairness and justice are inseparable and a major task for the criminal justice
system is to ensure full equality of treatment for all.
That is why this publication is so important. There will always be a need for accurate information
on how ethnic minorities are dealt with by all agencies in the criminal justice system. <strong>Statistics</strong> like
these tell us when something has been achieved, or tell us when it happens. The value of the data
will increase as their collection over a number of years allows trends to be uncovered.
I very much hope that everyone concerned with the criminal justice system will use these statistics
to inform their work and to promote equality across the system. That will generate fairness not only
within the criminal justice system, but also more widely.
