AIS SARTs, Radar Target Enhancer
McMURDO SMARTFIND S5
AIS SART
A manual deployment survivor location device for
use on life rafts or survival craft, it meets IMO SOLAS
requirements and is an alternative to a Radar SART.
Compact, easy to operate and deploy, the Smartfind
S5 is supplied in a quick release carry off bag for
quick evacuation. When activated it triggers an alarm
on all AIS enabled vessels within range, transmitting
your vessel’s MMSI number along with your current
position, which will be displayed as a marker on AISintegrated
chartplotters. Once activated the Smartfind
S5 AIS SART transmits continually for a minimum of
96hrs. An inbuilt GPS provides high speed position
information to assist in
the quick recovery
of survivors.
The highly visible,
buoyant carry case
can be wall mounted
the bridge or packed
inside a survival craft.
ECHOMAX ACTIVE-X
X Band Radar Target Enhancer
Active Radar Target Enhancer which dramatically
improves your safety at sea by increasing the chances
of being seen by on radar by commercial shipping.
The unit receives a signal from a transmitting radar,
amplifies it and returns a stronger signal.
The operating range is typically up to 30nm,
this will vary depending on the height that it
is installed, the heel angle of the boat and
also the position and power of the scanning
vessel’s radar system, but independent
performance tests by QinetiQ showed a
dramatic increase in the visible radar signal
when using the Active-X system, and a test
by Practical Boat Owner magazine showed
that it significantly outperformed competitive
Active RTE systems.
Why Fit an Active Radar Target
Enhancer?
One of the biggest dangers facing small
boats is the risk of being run down by larger
commerical vessels, particularly in busy shipping
lanes. These large vessels generally rely on radar
to inform them of any potential collision hazards,
particularly at night or in bad weather where
visibility is poor.
Most small boats are built from GRP, composite
materials or wood which are poor radar signal
reflectors. This, coupled with the fact that most
small boats sit relatively close to the water
means that it is very difficult for them to be
picked up on a ships radar. Even a yacht at full
sail doesn’t necessarily present a strong radar
target, especially when it is heeled over, which
reduces the visible cross-section.
A common solution is the use of passive radar
reflectors which are designed to reflect the
incoming radar signals more efficiently through
the use of angular metallic plates, but these
only have limited effectiveness, especially if the
incoming radar pulse is weak to begin with.
Active Radar Target Enhancers improve on this
by electronically amplifying and re-transmitting
the incoming radar pulses, so your small sailing
yacht will look like a much larger vessel to any
ship within radar scanning range. In independent
tests, the radar echo returned by an unheeled
boat fitted with the Echomax Active-X RTE was in
excess of 110 sq m, certainly big enough for the
skipper of any tanker to sit up and take notice!
