who wish to affix the white light to a daily
carry pistol before they lie down for
the night), for others it has a tendency to
be misused. The time for either quick on
or quick off is not during a high-stress
situation. This feature, nice as it is, can
quickly lead to problems for the end
user, especially police officers who often
take suspects at gunpoint and then need
to go “hands on” with them to finish the
arrest. Should an officer carry the light
separate from the pistol—only affixing
the light when needed—there exist two
major safety concerns.
First, while the unit is mounted to the
weapon it is not possible, in most cases,
to re-holster the gun. This presents a
huge dilemma when it does become necessary
to lay hands on the suspect. What
will you now do with a pistol that you
cannot re-holster? The solution to this
problem is either to immediately remove
the light and re-holster the weapon or
keep the weapon out while at the same
time engaging the suspect with only the
one free hand. Neither is particularly advantageous—or
smart.

SSL-1 is rugged enough for either SWAT
or patrol and is offered at a price that
will see it in the holsters of officers and
private citizens.
The second safety issue which immediately
presents itself is that it will require
two hands to remove a light such
as this from the pistol, one on the grip
of the weapon, the second pulling the
light forward. Inevitably it will happen
that an officer or armed citizen will have
a finger on the trigger of the weapon
and when the light is pulled forward to
dismount it from the pistol, a negligent
discharge will occur.
