SUBCOMPACT SHOOTOUT
I have some comments on Duane
Thomas’ article “Subcompact Shootout”
(S.W.A.T., September 2007):
1. Glad to see it. It is too hot down here
in Florida for a coat ten months out of
the year, and not too many can pull off
packing a .45 under a T-shirt. If I see a
kid with a sweatshirt with the hood up
in August I fi gure he’s about to rob the
store I’m in, and anyone with a vest on
just got back from his fi rst IDPA match.
Fanny pack? Nice for a long car trip, but
you never see any around town.
2. Found the same thing with the
“FBI load” years ago—too much recoil
to maintain a consistent grip on an
Airweight J-frame. Lighter weight hollow
points allow you to maintain a good
grip and also speed-load better.
3. I don’t carry a Kahr because I tried
one several years ago and it was so small
that my thumbs kept interfering with
the slidelock. Also, I’ve found that autos
don’t carry as well in deep concealment
as a small revolver. With cargo shorts and
a T-shirt I can have two S&W 642s, one
in a pocket holster and one with a hipgrip
and Tyler T-grip in the waistband,
along with a speedloader, knife, etc.
Thanks,
M. Howard, Florida
Thank you for providing feedback and
sharing your thoughts and techniques.
ENEMY AT THE GATE
The column “Enemy At The Gate” is
one of the primary reasons I have continued
to read S.W.A.T. for over four
years. I always considered it proof that
you guys are “plugged in.” Like you, I
will miss Claire Wolfe—that girl has a
salty enthusiasm that is second to none.
While Stewart Rhodes may not be well
known or widely published, he comes
with solid credentials and a good attitude.
I just read his fi rst article—I think
he’ll do fi ne.
A sincere “thank you” for taking the time
to write and share your thoughts with us.
Giving credit where it is due, the column
was the idea of Publisher Rich Lucibella and
was one of the fi rst things he instituted when
he bought S.W.A.T. six years ago. As editor,
I’ve seen the “director’s cut” of Stewart’s
fi rst four columns, and I think you will be
very pleased with what he has in store for
readers.
S.W.A.T. IS FOR
EVERYONE
Your magazine is one of a kind. I
subscribe to many gun magazines, but
S.W.A.T. fi ts my needs the best. Tiger
McKee, one of your Contributing Staff,
introduced me to the magazine. The articles
are for anyone who is a serious gun
enthusiast. I am not in law enforcement
or the military, but the material in your
articles, no matter if they are written
about rifl es, pistols or just testing clothing,
is of great interest to me. I have sub-
