NEW North Shore Owner Goes Fishing at Memorial Park •••<br />

Two retired couples are fmding<br />

condominium living at North Shore Villas in<br />

St Clair Shores a rewarding experience.<br />

John and Doris Tabor looked at condos<br />

on and off <strong>for</strong> several years be<strong>for</strong>e they<br />

toured North Shore VJ1lasin June, and on<br />

their first visit they bought a two-bedroom l<br />

one and one half bath condo with attachea<br />

single-car garage <strong>for</strong> about $100,000.<br />

"Wewalked in and signed up," says John<br />

Tabor.<br />

"I guess we looked at enough condos,"<br />

adds Doris Tabor. When asked what their<br />

favorite aspect about North Shore Villas<br />

living was, the Tabors answer in unison,<br />

'Thepark!"<br />

North Shore VJ1las,located on Masonic<br />

west of Jefferson, is just a block from St.<br />

Clair Shores' huge Memorial Park on Lake<br />

8t. Clair Shores. John Tabor enjoys fishing<br />

there with his grandson, and Doris Tabor<br />

says they walk there almost everyday.<br />

In fact, John Tabor takes his 9-year-old<br />

grandson fishing at the park whenever<br />

possible. On their visit, his grandson had<br />

even the veterans envious. He has a<br />

strategy: Fish where the bubbles are, he told<br />

grandPa - a strategy that produced fish.<br />

John Tabor says, "He said, 'Grandpa, I<br />

think you picked the right move'...<br />

But at the time, the Tabors were not<br />

ready to move. They had just put in a new<br />

central air conditioning system in their<br />

Harper Woods horne of 36 years.<br />

'We didn't intend to move,. says Doris<br />

Tabor.<br />

After sigmng a purchase agreement at<br />

North Shore Villas, the Tabors deCIdedthey<br />

had better put their house on the market.<br />

They went through the North Shore VJ1las<br />

broker, and the day after they listed, they<br />

held a garage sale. They sold the house that<br />

day - the fIrst day it was on the market.<br />

For the Tabors, their North Shore Villas<br />

condo is the first new home they've ever<br />

owned.<br />

"We've never had a new home," John<br />

Tabor says.<br />

"I didn't want to move way out," Doris<br />

Tabor adds.<br />

But what is the features in the condo she<br />

likes the best?: the fireplace.<br />

"I never had a fireplace," she says. "1<br />

always wanted one." John Tabor likes the<br />

huge, full basement - plenty of room <strong>for</strong> his<br />

hobby, molding Middle Ages knights in<br />

armor.<br />

He also likes the fact that there is no<br />

upkeep demands.<br />

"I used to do all the work in Harper<br />

Woods,"he says. "NowI don't do anything."<br />

Besides fIshing, however, he aoes find<br />

enough to do. He recently put water sealant<br />

on his front porch - the nicest looking porch<br />

in the development.<br />

The Tabors have also made a lot of<br />

friends at North Shore VJ1las.After working<br />

in men's clothing at Hudson's at Eastland<br />

<strong>for</strong> 26 years, John Tabor is always running<br />

into people who say, "I know you, you're the<br />

Hudson's man."<br />

All in all, Doris Tabor sums up her North<br />

Shore VIllas experIence qUIte succinctly,<br />

"We'requite com<strong>for</strong>table here."<br />

For Ted and Stella Neumann, condo<br />

livmg ISnot only a new experience, but It 1S<br />

also theIr first adventure m suburban lIfe.<br />

Now retired, they lived in DetrOit all<br />

theIr lives. They sold a large home at EIght<br />

Mile and Gratiot when they decided the<br />

condo lIfestyle at North Shore VJ1laswas <strong>for</strong><br />

them.<br />

"We'vebeen married <strong>for</strong> 54 years," says<br />

Stella Neumann. "He was born in DetrOIt.<br />

He worked <strong>for</strong> the city. He had his second<br />

heart attack. Here, he doesn't have to do<br />

anything but bowland play pinochle."<br />

"When they said 1wouldn't have to do<br />

anything, no snow shoveling, no pass<br />

mowing, 1 said that's what I wanted, says<br />

Ted Neumann.<br />

Beside maintenance-fee living, what the<br />

Neumanns lIke the best about their North<br />

Shore Villas two-bedroom, one and one half<br />

baths, single-ear garage condo <strong>for</strong> a low<br />

CEverything is convenient," Ted<br />

Neumann says, referring to the park and<br />

Nuemann, adQing, "It's quite close to the<br />

lake."<br />

She also likes the newness of condo<br />

livmg.<br />

"Welike it all," she says. "It's bright. We<br />

feel like beinJ in a hotel in Las Vegas. It's<br />

airy and mce.<br />

She says her daughter who now lives m<br />

the gamblmg capItal, regularly VISItsand<br />

approves oftheir deciSIOn.<br />

Ted Neumann bowls on three leagues,<br />

but the 79-year-old's only complamt about<br />

the Shores is the lack of appropriate<br />

competitIOn.But he's lookmg <strong>for</strong> worthwhl1e<br />

competItion nearby. Most leagues are <strong>for</strong><br />

young men, which are, obVIously,out of his<br />

league.<br />

"I can beat those guys all the time," he<br />

chides the youngsters. Once a 180 bowler,<br />

the twice heart-attack survivor boasts a 165<br />

average.<br />

The Neumanns are extremely happy<br />

that the move to the suburbs and condo<br />

living didn't mean abandoning their family<br />

- namely, Mooky, a Pekinese poodle mix.<br />

Yes,pets are allowed at North Shore Villas.<br />

Why not? It's your home.<br />

Stella Neumann also looks <strong>for</strong>ward to<br />

improving herself. Smce North Shore Villas<br />

is immediately next door to the St. ClaIr<br />

Shores Adult Education Center, she's<br />

looking<strong>for</strong>ward to taking classes.<br />

But the best part about North Shore<br />

Villas condo living, the Neumanns say, its<br />

that they can relax.<br />

"We're satisfied," Stella Neumann says.<br />

"We like it. We sit on the porch. We've both<br />

been retired <strong>for</strong> 17 years, but we never felt<br />

relaxed until we moved here."<br />

Ted Neumann adds, "Now we can relax.<br />

There was always tension be<strong>for</strong>e."<br />
