Golf News ~ Captain’s Corner 10 By Alan Prenoveau, Men’s Golf Society Since my previous quarterly report, The HHMGS has completed its inaugural 3-day Ryder Cup event and have completed plans for our 2011-2012 qualifying season. We won the inaugural Toll Brothers Challenge with the Brier Creek Club in North Carolina. And, our members have been actively working with the Club on the upcoming Member/Guest and match play Memorial Cup tournaments. Although these tournaments are officially Hampton Hall events and open to all golf club members, the HHMGS committees led by Terry Hannock and John Kolcum are critical to the success of these tournaments. For the Member/Guest, plans have been finalized, the field is full (for the first time), and now all we‘re hoping for is great weather for the weekend. Next year, this tournament will return to its traditional first weekend in May. In conjunction with the HHLGS, We published our 2011 Directory and schedule of this year‘s golf events. If you are an HHMGS member and haven‘t picked up your Directory, please contact Mark Larson at 843-706-2420. We also finalized the restructuring of the Hole-in-One program. Don‘t forget, hole-in-one insurance is NOT included in your annual dues and costs $5 each time a hole-in-one is recorded. And, thanks to Paul Sepulveda‘s hole-in-one in March, we‘ll be celebrating his feat this quarter. This party is only open to those enrolled in the program so, if your spouse doesn‘t play golf and you‘d like her to join you at the party, please sign her up for the program as well. After the Member/Guest tournament, things will be relatively quiet for the remainder of spring and early summer. Members will be; Competing in Saturday events to accumulate Ryder Cup points. Another Toll Brother‘s Challenge with Hampton Pointe will be hosted on July 16—17. The HHMGS continues to grow and be the best $35 value around. George Ragland and Don Rolston, our Board members-at-large, led this year‘s first new member orientation and I‘m sure we‘ll need to schedule another in the next few weeks. By Jenny McCord, Ladies’ Golf Society We rolled in the new year with our first general meeting in February of 2011 and voted (and accepted) the proposed revision to our By-Laws. The next order of business is to revise the Play Day Guidelines and present them for voting in the next general meeting in May. The plan is to combine the Spring Awards and the Member/Member event. During February, our HHLGS Interleague team participated in the match play tournaments. Under the leadership of team Captain, Bonnie Faas, Hampton Hall ladies took second place this year. Quite an accomplishment since this is only our third year of participation! Also, our March Madness is underway and the winners will be acknowledged at the Spring Awards ceremony. We are still working on the HHLGS/HHMGS combined event for mid- to late Spring. As the weather has continued to improve, we have seen participation increase in both the nine and eighteen hole play days. Great news! We look forward to welcoming new members as we continue to grow and encourage all of our membership to help get them involved. See you on the links!
Golf News 11 Principles of the Rules of Golf By: Dick Titus, MGS Golf Handicap Chairman We are now in the middle of the match play season. Match play rules are sometimes a little different than those used in stroke play matches. This month we will look at three scenarios that might arise in match play. The scenarios examined illustrate that an understanding of the rules is essential. SCENARIO 1: During a competitive round, Paul arrives for his tee-time five minutes late, within the time limit allowed by the local rules committee to prevent disqualification, but incurring loss of the first hole. His friend and fellow competitor in the match, Chip, quietly tells Paul he will not assess any penalty, as the match only affects those two players. Is there anything wrong with this? Answer: Rule 6-3 requires that a player must start at the time established or be disqualified. Local rules can modify the rule somewhat, as in this situation. However, if Chip and Paul proceed by not assessing the penalty to Paul, they would both be disqualified for violation of Rule 1-3, for agreeing to waive a rule. SCENARIO 2: Prior to his big afternoon match with Bill, Tom plays a practice round on the course. Has he violated any rules? Answer: If Tom were involved in a stroke-play competition, he would be disqualified; however, Rule 7-1(a) states that on any day of a match-play competition, a player may practice on the competition course before a round. So, Tom has acted within the rules. SCENARIO 3: During a competition, George asked Tom how many strokes he took on the previous hole. Tom declined to reveal to George his score on the hole. Was George entitled to know how many strokes Tom had taken? Answer: Rule 9-2 states that an opponent in a match play event is entitled to know the number of strokes taken by the other player during the play of a hole and after. The number of strokes taken on the hole must include any penalty stokes assessed. Tom incurs the general penalty of loss of hole (Rule 2-6) for failing to act in accordance with Rule 9-2a. What happens if Tom gives George wrong information because he didn’t know he had incurred a penalty? Tom still incurs the loss of hole penalty because he gave incorrect information. It is the player’s responsibility to know the rules.
