2. <strong>Materials</strong> technology in Estonia<br />

The timber construction cluster aims to increase the global competitiveness of the Estoni<strong>an</strong> timber industry by<br />

creating a partner network inside the industry as well as beyond industry boundaries. This includes, in addition<br />

to cluster members, building technology <strong>an</strong>d education establishments, building design consult<strong>an</strong>cies, equipment<br />

<strong>an</strong>d technology suppliers, timber building m<strong>an</strong>ufacturers <strong>an</strong>d sales comp<strong>an</strong>ies.<br />

The Estoni<strong>an</strong> ECO cluster unites Estoni<strong>an</strong> entrepreneurs that are focused on increasing their products’ value by<br />

making them more economical <strong>an</strong>d ecological. Cluster particip<strong>an</strong>ts are pl<strong>an</strong>ning to develop a common passive<br />

house product that will potentially decrease heating expenses by 10 times. General goals of the cluster include<br />

increasing collaboration between comp<strong>an</strong>ies <strong>an</strong>d scientific institutions as well as sharing knowledge related to<br />

economical <strong>an</strong>d ecological houses. The activities of the cluster deal with pl<strong>an</strong>ning <strong>an</strong>d m<strong>an</strong>aging economical<br />

<strong>an</strong>d ecological houses, materials, cle<strong>an</strong>ing products, mainten<strong>an</strong>ce products, etc.<br />

The Estoni<strong>an</strong> wind power cluster is running under the umbrella org<strong>an</strong>isation Estoni<strong>an</strong> Wind Power Association.<br />

There are currently 11 members in the cluster including comp<strong>an</strong>ies in metal industry, ICT industry, energy<br />

industry as well as educational <strong>an</strong>d research institutions. The pl<strong>an</strong>ned activities of the cluster until 2013 include<br />

e.g. linking the cluster to the supply chains of international wind power comp<strong>an</strong>ies, launching of m<strong>an</strong>ufacturing<br />

of compact wind generators as well as launching of m<strong>an</strong>ufacturing of wind generator parts in Estonia.<br />

2.2.4 Industry, associations <strong>an</strong>d comp<strong>an</strong>ies<br />

There are several industry associations in Estonia representing industries having relev<strong>an</strong>ce from the materials<br />

technology point of view. The following table gives <strong>an</strong> overview of these associations; individual industries are<br />

discussed in more detail in section 2.3.<br />
